Goes from apprentice hustler to master cheat
'Duddy Kravitz' - engaging film
By MICHELLE GREEN
“The Apprenticeship of
Duddy Kravitz” has been hail
ed by such critics as the judges
of the Berlin Film Festival as
an engaging, masterfully exe
cuted film. It is. indeed, mas
terfully executed — if not
totally engaging.
"American Graffiti’s” Rich
ard Dreyfuss is Duddy Kravitz
— the malignantly greedy,
ruthless Jewish hustler who
tries to make his escape from
the Montreal slums of the
early forties via the magical
medium of money.
Always echoing in Duddy s
ears is his grandfather’s tnottd
— "A man without land is a
nobody.” He tries, then, to
her with gifts of beer and
promises of $50 bills. Like the
conscientious female that she
is, Yvette refuses to put a
dollar value on their relation
ship, and Duddy finds, to his
amazement, that it’s possible
for her to fall in love with him
without his making a down
payment.
Duddy serves the most im
portant part of his apprentice
ship at the resort, for it is
there that he learns the fine
points of manipulation and
hustling. He becomes the butt
of a little prank played upon
him by a malicious fellow
waiter (Allan Migicovsky) and
loses his entire salary for the
summer All. as they say, is
not lost, and the money is
returned, with a bonus. Duddy

become a "somebody" — and
to cement his grandfather’s
love for him — by scrambling
for enough money to buy a
magnificent tract of land in the
Canadian wilds.
HE RAISES the funds and
buys the land less than a year
after he first sets his sights on
it — but it’s an altogether dif
ferent Duddy who finds himself
a landowner at last.
To Duddy Kravitz, the im
portant thing isn’t how you
play the game — it’s whether
you win or lose. Armed with
this philosophy and a total lack
of anything resembling a con
science. Duddy sets out to
become the biggest entrepre
neur that the world has ever
known.
He works in his uncle s fac
tory. sells mail-order under
wear to teeny hoppers, and
finally lands a job in a summer
camp where some mighty big
tippers are sojourning. Duddy
seizes the opport unity, of
course, and hustles his little
buns about the dining room at
a furious pace.
IT IS AT the summer camp
that Duddy meets Yvette
(Micheline LanctoD. his soon-
to-be secretary and girlfriend.
By this time, he has become so
immersed in his obsession with
material wealth that he woo*
learns a most important les
son. though — do unto others
before they do unto you.
AFTER BECOMING a Mas
ter Manipulator, Duddy goes
out into the big-time, hires an
Italian set as a director and
starts an independent film
company which produces epic
works like "Happy Bar Mitz-
vah. Bernie.” (The film is well
worth seeing just for this riot
ous movie-within-a- movie.)
In order to finance the com
pany. however. Duddy must go
to a Mafia-type called "The
Boy Wonder” — one of his
father’s acquaintances who
made it big by smuggling
smack — for a loan. He gets it,
of course — by carrying a suit
case containing heroin across
the border into the U S. Duddy
learns quickly.
The plot thickens las it
always does) and Duddy be
comes a full-fledged movie
mogul. He expands his opera
tion. and hires a pathetically
trusting young hayseed named
Virgil (Randy Quaid) to drive
a truck for him. Virgil is an
epileptic - and Duddy knows
it. He lets him drive, despite
the fact that he could have a
seizure at any moment — and
— you guessed it — Virgil has
a terrible wreck when he loses
consciousness during an at
tack
PARALYZED BY the acci
dent, Virgil lays not a hint of
blame on his employer — who
(admirably) can’t forget that it
was his greed that put Virgil in
a wheelchair. Yvette can’t for
get it, either, and she nearly
abandons Duddy. He repents
(briefly), and she relents, but
all is. not well. Duddy has a
talk with one of his mentors, a
hardened Jewish businessman
who has scrambled up from
the slums himself. "It’s war,
Duddy, and the white man has
all the big guns,” he tells him.
Duddy’s heart hardens.
Bankrupt, he tries to raise
the money to make the final
payment on the land. All else
fails, and he rips off $1,000
from Virgil — and with that
move, loses all claims to being
a member of the human race.
He loses Yvette, too — she
(wisely) refuses to give him a
chance to steal anything from
her.
And so Duddy becomes a
"success” — he is a landown
er, the future mayor of Kra-
vitzville, which he intends to
build out of the wilderness. His
metamorphosis from appren
tice hustler to master cheat is

Puppet theater in third year
By KARIN SWARTZ
through the ages, puppets
have held a high place in
societies all over the world.
Even in the twentieth century,
when television programs
seem to have replaced the arts
as a form of entertainment,
puppet theaters continue to
flourish. The city of Athens has
a puppet theater in its third
year.
Three women share all the
work involved in the theater.
Fay Welch. Roberta Vest and
Amburn Power met while
working on a Junior Assembly
Children’s Theater and decidec

their own
"It takes forever to get
things done because we don't
have a boss." Welch said.
"We’re a democracy — we all
have to agree on everything
Each one of us gets the credit
and the blame for whatever we
do.'
THE WOMEN make the
puppets and scenery, work
with the lights, write the
scripts (usually based on fairy
tales) and tape the musical
soundtracks and sound effects.
They also produce the shows,
which involves manipulating
the puppets and doing their
voices.
Because they are more port
able. hand puppets are used
rather than marionettes. The
theater members learned to
make puppets at the annual
International Puppet Festival
and from information in books.
Materials for the puppets in
clude Celastic, styrofoam balls
and cloth. Paint, feathers, se
quins and dime store jewels
are used for decoration.
Some puppets have a modern
"cartoony" appearance, while
others are more classical or
romantic. The latter are char
acterized by their beautifully
molded Celastic heads and
long eyelashes
The witch of "Hansel and
Gretel" has an eerie look with
her green-pupiled. bloodshot
eyes, while the Genii of "Alad
din and the Magic Lamp" fits
his role perfectly with an
Oriental, slant-eyed face and
filmy white robes
CERTAIN TRICKS are used
which make the magic take
place on stage. Cinderella is
transformed from a dirty cin
der wretch to an elegant prin
cess in a matter of seconds.
The wolf of “Red Riding
Hood" actually ate before the
children's eyes
However. Welch said, "The
children were unimpressed. Of
course he could eat things —
he was real."
Welch said she enjoys work

totaLcontrof of the artistic and
dramat*^ experience. Real ac
tors don't always do what you
want them to. When you get a
dark theater and lights come
on and the children start
listening, and you can hear
their breath go in, it makes it
all worthwhile.”
The Athens Puppet Theater’s
next show will be “Jack and
the Beanstalk" November 3.

THE ACTING in “Duddy

able as Duddy. and he makes a
quite convincing little climber.
Randy Quaid is unforgettable
as his foil — the trusting,
unambitious follower who be
comes a victim. And Micheline
Lanctot is a suitably wise and
long-suffering girlfriend for
Duddy.
There really isn’t any ele
ment in “The Apprenticeship
of Duddy Kravitz" that can bo
faulted. The screenplay is rea
sonably faithful to the book (it
was done by Mordecai Richler,
author of the original). Every
part of "Kravitz" is good in
itself. But there was something
lacking in the overall product,
because I found myself not

If you’re going to graduate soon then vou're probably wondering
where and how to begin your career. Here are ten ways to trust
your luck and waste your time.
• Go to your favorite Chinese restaurant, order a meal and open

you're in luck. If not. you II just be —
