Could it be the Georgia
Rugby club has got an in with
the Man Up There, or at least
with his lieutenant in charge of
climate distribution on the
planet Earth?
It could well be. for on the
second straight Sunday of per
feet October weather, the rug
gers demolished their second
straight opponent of the 1974-75
season, the latest victim being
a ragtag bunch calling them
selves the Old Grey Team
Actually, you’ll find them on
the books as the Columbia City
Team tout of South Carolina),
and they were simply not in
Georgia's class, bowing 37-0 at
the lower intramural field last
Sunday
Georgia opened the
match fired up. meeting deter
mined resistance from Old
Grey at the outset. Georgia
kept the ball in Grey territory
for long periods of time, but
couldn't seem to punch it over
the line for a try (good for four
points)
Finally, stocky Murray Baskt
broke the ice for Georgia with
a try. and Bruce Gibson kicked
what amounts to an extra point
to add two more, and the rout
was on at 6-0
THE KKD-BEARDED Baskt
is a transplanted Ivy Leaguer
and plays what amounts to a
linebacker spot when the oppo
sition is attacking with the
ball. He is about 5’ 10” goes
about 180. and has good speed
and strength Needless to say.
he is one of the club's top
players
Gibson, who is a fullback but
plays the deep man for Geor
gia. scored the next try on a
beautiful run that nearl) went
the length of the 120 yard field
He managed the break past the
Grey front line and eluded
their backs with some good
moves
Rod Wright, who, with his
shoulder-length red hair and
splendid beard, would look
more at home with the Doobie
Brothers than with a rugby
team, kept the flow in Geor
gia's favor by utilizing his
blazing speed to outrun almost
everyone for yet another try.
Gibson again kicked the con
version to make it 16-0.
THE OLD GREY team be
gan to realize the futility of
their efforts here, and their
spirit began to sag noticeably
Georgia scored again by sweep
ing the right side and no one of
the Carolinians appeared inter
ested in tackling him 22-0
Late in the half. Gibson
scored again after taking a
nice pass and failed to convert
as the kick was from a tough
angie. However, he did convert
on Lane Young's later try to
make the score 32-0 at the half,
and it remained that way
It bears mentioning that an
extra point in rugby is a bit
more difficult than imagined
When a player runs the ball
across the line, he must touch
the t all on the ground to make
it good. Then, the ball is
brought out 2a yards exactly
even with that touch-down spot
for the kicking site. So, if the
ball is touched down in the
comer of the end zone, the
kicker is going to have to kick
a 25 yard extra-point from the
sideline.
Therefore, scoring strategy
involves not only crossing the
try line as expediently as
possible, but touching it down
near the center of the field is
of g»*eat concern also. So many
of Georgia's tries came on
breakaway runs Sunday that
Gibson was afforded the luxury
of several kicks from dead
center.
BY CONTRAST. Old Grey
rarely threatened to score a
try. and its one chance for
points, a penalty kick, done in
the same manner as a field
goal, fell just short of the
crossbar
All in all. Georgia’s second
outing was much improved
over the first “I thought our
passing was much better."
stated Wright afterwards “We
have had a good week of
practice. Our loose ball play
could be better and we need
crisper passing.
"We’ve got good size and
speed, but we need to pick up
our handling of the ball,"
commented Jim Bruce. "They
(Old Grey) caught our for
wards loafing a little and hurt
us a little."
"OUR GUYS have been prac
ticing hard this week," said
Bruce. “A lot of the players
are running a lot of miles on
their own and also coming to
practice two days a week."
And some people think that
ruggers’ only practice is pop
ping beer tops, although that
does frequently enter the pic
ture.
Riding high at 2-0, the rug
gers play Emory in Atlanta
next Sunday and return to the
lower intramural field on Oct.
20 to face Atlanta’s tough Old
White Club.

Scouting’s worth
your time, you
don’t know enough
about Scouting.
