When Ih *y hear the term Southern rock and roll music,
most prop e's thoughts turn to the blues of the late Duane
Allman, the Allman Brothers’ Band and the Marshall
Tucker Ba id. as well as the l aunch and roll of Black Oak
Arkansas * nd Wet Willie.
However, the distinctively Southern sound of country
music, combined with the electric sounds of today, have
also gained for the group Poco wide recognition in the past.
Now Richie Kuray. former leader of Poco. has brought
together a group ol talented musicians under the name of
the Souther. Hillman. Kuray Band.
till: GHOI'P'S debut album, entitled "S. II F. Band"
and available on Asylum Records, goes beyond that Kuray
and Poco could ever have produced together. Guitarists J.
I) Souther and Chris Hillman combine their own song
writing and harmonizing abilities with Kuray’s to create a

sound offering more variety to fans of country rock. The
group also benefits from the abilities of Paul Harris on
keyboards, Al Perkins on steel guitar and Jim (Jordon on
|hi cussion.
Side one of their first album includes songs written by
Souther. Hillman and Kuray. “Failin' in l^ove" by Kuray is
definitely representative of bis days with Poco. but the rest
ol |lie band adds more depth musically. This song features
each member of the band doing what he does best and is
presently receiving a great deal of AM airplay. The
remainder of side one ranges from “Heavenly Kire" by
Hillman and Len Kagan to “The Heartbreaker” by
Souther.
SIDK. TWO is equally representative of the new sound
coining out of Dixie these days. The best cuts include "The
Flight of the Dove" and "Safe at Home" However, like
side one. the second side has no fillers or bad cuts
The Souther. Hillman. Kuray Band seems well on the
wav to wide acceptance and respectability, which should
guarantee their eventual success at the record counter.
Although this is only their first album, the group already
possesses the tightness of an older, more established group.

Robert Aldrich has been
responsible for some of the
more action-filled. violent
films in Hollywood including
"Kiss Me Deadly” (1955),
"Flight of the Phoenix” (1966:,
"The Dirty Dozen" (1967), and
“The Grissom Gang" (1971).
Aldruch refuses, however, to
be typecast as a director of
men's action films.
Anyone who has seen the
performances of Beryl Reid
and Susannah York in "The
Killing oi Sister George"
(1968) realizes that Aldrich is
capable of sensitively portray
ing something as complex as a
lesbian relationship. "The
Grissom Gang" is not merely a
gangster movie; it beautifully
shows the love that grows
between a kidnapped debutante
effect on both.
The warden (Eddie Albert)
attempts to persuade Crewe to
coach a football team of pris
oners to play a game against
the prison guards. Crewe is
only interested in surviving
and refuses until the warden
coerces him. Crewe's survival
requires him to coach the
inmate team.
He still has no commitment
to the players until circum
stances before and during the
game force him to make a
personal moral choice between
self-preservation and responsi
bility for something more im
portant than the individual.
THE FOOTBALL game it
self, which occupies the latter
half of the film, is probably the
best-directed. filmed and

MOVIE REVIEW
and her simple-minded ab
ductor.
ALDRICH TENDS to keep a
stock company of technicians
and actors who have worked
with him from the beginning.
Cinematographer Joseph
Biroc, editor Michael Luciano,
and composer Frank DeVol
have all been associated with
Aldrich on almost every pro
ject. The teamwork pays off
again in "The Longest Yard"
where direction, photography,
editing and music are well
integrated with acting and
writing to produce a thorough
ly enjoyable movie.
The main character is Paul
Crewe (Burt Reynolds), an ex-
pro football player who was
kicked out of the league for
throwing a game. Washed up.
he is relegated to Citrus State
Prison (actually Reidsville
Federal Penitentiary, Ga.) af
ter stealing the car of a
wealthy heiress who is also his
former lover.
"THE LONGEST YARD”
may be considered by many to
be another masculine action
film. Aldrich has more going
for him than that Although I
am not a fan of stock car
racing. I found Lamon John
son's "Last American Hero” to
be fascinating. And although
I’m not particularly an avid
football fan, "The Longest
Yard" is also engrossing for
the same reason: the sport is
secondary to plot and charac
terization. but has a direct
seen Aldrich builds up almost
unbearable suspense, culmina
ting in a highly charged fourth
quarter. If the end of the game
doesn't have you on the edge of
your seat, nothing will.
There are so many things
right about "The Longest
Yard" that it is difficult to
criticize it. The original story
line by producer Albert S.
Ruddy (prod.. "Godfather")
sounds very simplistic and
without any real substance, but
Tracy Keenan Wynn’s script
and dialogue are excellent.
Aldrich’s tightly controlled
direction, especially in the
second half of the movie, make
it as tense as the final take-off
in "Flight of the Phoenix.” The
process of choosing the most
dangerous criminals for the
football team is reminiscent of
similar scenes in "The Dirty
Dozen.”
BURT REYNOLDS is sur
prisingly good as the inmate
coach and quarterback. I
would even go so far as to say
that it’s his best performance
to date (he was unfortunately
inadequate in "Deliverance")
— he seems to have a talent
for comedy which hasn’t been
noticeable in previous efforts.
Eddie Albert as the warden
and James Hampton as an
inmate who befriends Crewe
are both good. Charles Tyner
(also in Aldrich’s "Emperor of
the North") and Michael Con
rad are excellent in character
roles. As the warden’s sex-
starved secretary, singer Ber
nadette Peters makes an aus
picious debut.
AS WITH any Aldrich work,
there is more to the movie
than appears on the surface. In
"The longest Yard." the seri
ous themes take the audience
by surprise. Underneath the
struggle of the football game
lie themes dealing with cor
ruption. responsibility, self-
respect. and the respect of
others.
After the expected climax,
there is a further tense mo
ment which brings these
