Instructions given for plants
B> JK.WNK ARNOLD
Cactus growing, an interest
ing and rewarding hobby, has
been on the increase at the
University. With the confined
space and dry indoor atmo
sphere of a dorm or apartment
and the limited time that most
students have, a cactus is the
ideal plant.
Cacti are native to the desert
and require little water and
attention However, they do
need a warm environment,
which is usually found on the
window sill of a dorm room,
according to Dr. Douglas Cra
ter of the University extension
services.
STARTING A cactus from
seed takes a good deal more
effort than simply buying a
mature plant, but is is much
cheaper and definitely more
fascinating. Crater said Seed
may be purchased from seed
stores and catalogues, he add
ed.
Crater said that the major
misconception in dealing with
cacti is that plain sand is the
best soil in which to grow the
plants.
A mixture of standard pot
ting soil added to one quarter
the amount of clean sand and
finely crushed brick will yield
more success, he said
Fertilizer should be applied
once a month and the pot
watered from the bottom so as
not to disturb the seeds. Room
temperature water is prefera
ble to cold water which may
slow the germination process.
Placing clear saran wrap on
top of the pot and sealing it
helps preserve the soil mois
ture and air humidity, he
continued.
TIIK POT should be located
in a warm shaded position The
seeds will take from 10 to 20
days to germinate and the
covering should be immediate
ly removed. Crater said. The
seedlings should have devel
oped spines before being trans
planted Cacti enthusiasts
should wait seven to 10 days
before watering after trans
planting the new seedling, he
added.
Small cacti should be trans
planted as soon as they out
grow the pots they are in.
Mature cacti should be repot
ted every three years, he said.
The secret to growing cacti
is not to overwater them.
Crater said. It is important to
hit a successful medium and
not let the soil dry out. he said
Soggy soil is also unhealthy for
the cacti A cactus will not
grow or bloom well in either
condition.
WATER LKFT standing at
the base of the plant will lead
to stem rot. Crater said. Good
drainage will prevent this
problem. If the plant is dryer
than it should be. attempts
should not be made to over
water. This lack of moisture
will not kill the cactus, only
slow its growth, he added
Often cactus will be bothered
by insects of various types.One
way of removing the insects is
with a cotton-tipped toothpick
dipped in alcohol. Crater ex
plained. Another way of getting
rid of the pests is to carefully
cover the soil so it will remain
intact and dry and turning the
plant upside dow n and dipping
it in water.
Several attempts may be
needed in order to achieve
success, but do not give up on
the first try. Many types of
cacti will flower indoors. The
beauty and wonder of these
blossoms are well worth the
effort put into growing them.
Crater said
