Evacuation cancelled
SAIGON (UPI) A planned evacuation of 458 South
Vietnamese orphans was canceled Wednesday Officials
ruled the jet that was to carry them was unsafe.
World Airways President Edward Daly reported U S. aid
officials and South Vietnamese airport officers said a DC8
cargo jet intended for the trip was not equipped to carry
passengers, and the mercy flight would not be allowed
Daly, whose charter airline has been ferrying rice to
Phnom Penh, said he wanted to evacuate the 458 Saigon
orphans in the face of Communist advances towards the
capital
Crews installed safety nets and webbing on the floor of
the plane, but inspectors said the makeshift passenger
accomodations did not meet required safety specifications.
Israeli position firms
ISRAEL l PI) Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin
said Wednesday Israel wants to renew contacts with Egypt
o\ er a new agreement in the Sinai Desert but would not go
beyond the offers it made during the negotiations carried
out by Secretary of State Henry A Kissinger
In an interview broadcast by Israel’s armed forces radio,
Rabin also said he believed the cutoff of U S. aid to
Indochina would not be applied to Israel Rabin said he
could not foresee this happening with Israel because Israel
could in no way be equated with U.S. allies in Indochina
1 see no reason or justification to deviate one whit from
wh.it we have offered.” Rabin said in the radio interview
The fact that Egypt would on no account accept the
Israeli proposals must not be allowed to bring about a
change in the Israeli position.”
