Christmas' album
is a sheer pleasure

Good albums are to be had, hut
•he likes of Brighter Hay by
Keith Christmas are uncom
mon at best.
Christmas is a talent with
rare good fortune manifested
by the fact that he latched on
to a label with style and
artistic verve, Manticore. This
label is the product of the
workings of Greg Lake and
Pete Sinfield that offers more
insight into the musicians
themselves.
In addition, Lake and Sinfield
have produced Brighter Day
singly and as a team, also
acquiring the backbone musi
cians for the album, Mel
Collins and Pete Solly. Techni
cally the production is excel
lent, neither heavy nor domi
nating. The record is of superb
quality, being clean and unaf
fected, Lake achieves the best
moods on the cuts he produces
Sinfield’s touch is quite good,
but not as stimulating as
Lake's.
Christmas possesses a haunt
ingly poignant voice and is an
able guitarist. His compositions
are all well balanced lyrically
as well as musically, the effect
of the fine textured mixing of
instruments coupled with the
mysterious appeal of Christ
mas' voice. Another bonus is
that his music is nearly impos
sible to label. The music is a
sheer pleasure, competent and
free of commerciality. Nor is it
rigid but a loose collaboration
with occasional frivolities.
TIIE TRACK displays a
grand horn section, led and
arranged by Mel Collins Col
lins proves to be the musical
standout on the album, which
is quite a feat if one considers
the excellence of the remaining
players. However, his saxo
phone sears this tune and is as
piercing as his work with King
Crimson
The mood created on "Foot
hills" is stunning The impres
sion of the sound itself is deep,
highlighted by subtle synthe
sizer work by Pete Solly. "The
Bargees" is another cut of
similar scope, yet more omi
nous in its astounding simpli
city, The essence of the song is
a moog bass which sounds
muqh like a bass harmonium
beneath water, played by Solly
Tommy Reilly plays an inter
esting lead harmonica that is
closer akin to a flute in sound.

complete accompaniment
“Lover’s Cabaret” is lighter
than the previous compositions,
featuring Collins on flute —
which he handles with consi
derable aplomb — Skaila Kan-
ga on harp and Solly on
electric piano. Drums and bass
are reduced to a low key while
maintaining competence.
Christmas plays guitar in
fine style and finishes off with
the vocal theme revolving
about the basic “ode to a lay.”
but somehow he carries the
feeling to a greater threshold.
Solly and Collins compliment
each other nicely here. Solly
with his electric jazz rumble
and Collins the sensitive flutist,
bringing back memories of "I
Talk To The Wind ’
“ROBIN IIOOD" is less seri
ous in nature, being a discourse
into the life and times of the
most reknowned dealer in the
Sherwood forest. Christmas’
guitar lends itself aptly to the
theme, followed by Solly on
clarinet. Will Watson plays
french horn, adding embellish
ment and drama to an already
excellent track.
Christmas obviously has guts
or he would not even attempt a
song as delicate as “My Girl.’’
But he does attempt it and the
result is magnificent. Sinfield
displays his best individual
production on the album here
by allowing all instruments to
lie back, thereby permitting
the intense feeling of the lyrics
and vocals to run rampant.
The string arrangement is
tasteful and the effect is almost
as good as Smokey’s original
version.
“Song of a Drifter" wraps up
what must be an impeccable
recording. The mood here is
just as etheral as that of “The
Bargees." a bit more up tempo
and more lavish of production.
Christmas comes through it
all brilliantly, for this is his
album by rights and it is a
classic one However, the al
bum and Christmas shall re
main obscure, for. as the cover
attests, he is more concerned
with the mastery of the music
in his soul than with being a
rock ’n’ roll star.
Christmas has contributed
more to music than “40.000
Headmen” with Elton John
t-shirts could ever aspire to. I
hold his next work in anticipa
tion.
'Alternative' theatre now
entertaining many ways
By KIBKI.AND DUCKWORTH
A new type of entertainment
facility has arrived in Athens.
Loco-Mot ion. which opened
May 2, is located beside Ru
Dene's Delicatessen at The
Station, and offers an "alterna
tive" theatre for Athens.
While the theatre primarily
features motion prictures, live
musical entertainment is also
being offered on certain week
ends.
The movies include popular
features, oldies, avant garde,
experimental, shorts, animated
and independent student films.
Most movies cost $1.
IN THE FUTURE the thea
tre is also expected to present
drama, poetry readings, art
and still photograph displays.
Loco-Motion was the brain
child of Jay Hoey, a journalism
student at the University and
Steve Sharpe, a resident of
Athens. The operation is small
now and funds are a problem.
Sharpe said.
Sharpe said that the main
purpose of the theatre was to
provide a place where students
could “come up any night and
not be sure of what's going to
happen.”
KIIARPE HOPES for in
creased student input and said
they would welcome drama,
films, musicians, or just about
any other type of entertain
ment. Sharpe* also encourages
art and photographs and Will
offer them for sale in the
theatre.
Those wishing to contribute
their talent can usually reach
Hoey or Sharpe between 10
am. and noon, or in the
evenings after 8 p m., at the
theatre.
Sharpe said that “Athens
needs a place for film students
Athens fs a terrible place for
film students. We will back an
attempt to publicize a good
film "
While pornographic films are
not being shown yet. Sharpe
said “You would not believe
how many people want to see
pornographic films If we get
any pornography, it will bo
more of an art thing."
Sharpe hopes to obtain a
beer license in the future, and
to sell popcorn, pizza and soft
drinks
