The Red and Black. Wednesday. March I®. 197®
J-school up for accreditation
Bv jam: singer
Every six years, a team of
five or six people from the
communication field visits the
University's journalism school
for no more than two days and
makes a decision which indi
rectly affects the future of
every one of the school’s
enrollees They are represen
tatives of the national accred
itation committee
Although most people were
probably unaware of the fact,
last Thursday and Friday,
March 4 and 5. were the dates
set for the accreditation com
mittee team's review They, in
turn, made their recommen
dation to the Accrediting Com
mittee of the American Council
on Education for Journalism
(ACEJi in Atlanta on Satur
day, March ti.
this committee will now-
pass on its recommendation as
to accreditation, made on the
basis of the team's report, to
the full ACEJ. which will not
release a final decision until
May 2 The decision will be
submitted privately to Univer
sity President Fred C. Davison
at that time
WHETHER \ journalism
school receives accreditation is
based on a number of diverse
factors, according to Theodore
Peterson chairman of the ac
creditation team which visited
the University, and dean of the
College of Communication at
the University of Illinois
The team is supplied with a
report on such criteria as
course outlines and faculty and
budget information before its
arrival, Peterson said Al
though there is usually some
overlap, each member of the
learn is an expert in one area
of journalism which is to be
evaluated, he explained
"When we get here we try to
talk to students, faculty and
members of the University
administration and try to visit
as many classes as we can,”
Peterson said. An initial report
is then prepared and read to
the school's dean and the
university's president before it
is submitted to the national
accrediting committee.
The school as a whole does
not receive accreditation. Pet
erson said Instead, each prog
ram or sequence is judged
individually. All four sequen
ces in the journalism school-
advertising. news-editorial,
public relations and radio-tele-
vision-film, are currently ac
credited, he added
The University presently has
the only accredited journalism
school in the state of Georgia;
however. Peterson explained
some schools do not ask for
accreditation, either because
they are building up their
program or as a matter of
policy.
PETERSON EXPLAINED
he was not at liberty to
comment on the likelihood ol
the University's journalism
school having its accreditation
renewed.
A journalism school applying
for accreditation or reaccredi-
talion is judged by guidelines
applying lo its faculty, facili
ties, stated and obtained objec
lives, curriculum, relation with
the media and other profes
sional journalists. budget,
administration and class proc
edures. including placement
and advising services.
A school which is denied
accreditation may appeal the
decision before a five-man
board appointed by the ACEJ
within 30 days of notification of
the accrediting decision by the
ACEJ president
Accreditation is generally re
fused only if the school does
not meet "minimal standards
agreed upon by the accredi
tors." Peterson said
Other members of the ac
crediting team which visited
the University were Neale
t opple, director ol the Univer
sity of Nebraska's School of
Journalism; Professor Pal
Cranston, of the University of
Washington; N S Hayden, pub
lisher of the Herald-Dispatch
and Advertiser in Huntington.
West Virginia; Betsy Plank,
assistant vice president of the
Illinois Bell Telephone Com
pany in Chicago; and Ted
Sondag. director of advertising
for the Lansing iMichigan)
State Journal.
