"We are not too happy about being phased out, but that’s
progress.” Marquise said
THE RESTAURANT was named when a secretary
writing out an application for the business wrote down
"Krazy” instead of "Kozy.” the word which was originally
intended by the owner.
The new name was retained because “whoever is in this
business must be a little crazy.” Marquise said
Alice's was started nearly 18 years ago by Mike and
Alice Marquise. "It's like watching your kids grow up,
knowing it's a job well done,” Marquise said.
The interior of the restaurant is furnished in an off-beat
fashion In one corner of the dining room, a neatly set table
and chair are suspended up-side-down from the ceiling. A
large "Certificate of Lunacy” adorns one wall of the
establishment Marquise said it was given to him as a gift
by a former University student
He said many students and other customers have helped
to decorate the restaurant with "insane decor.” by
donating art. poetry, photography and a sign which says
“Effie for Mayor."
"People care a lot about us. We’re not spectacular
because that doesn't last. We're consistent...that’s what’s
important." Marquise said
Rather than patronizing the " unreachables” in price,
many people eat at Alice’s. Marquise said. When times
were hard, a few years back, a “recession special,” meat
and two vegetables for $1.20. was added to the menu, he
said. Although the special was to be terminated. Marquise
decided to allow it to continue.
"The money side isn’t so important to us. It’s the human
quality we care about he said.

Cancer clinic sucessful
The Female Cancer-detect
ing Program conducted on
campus and in three other
Athens locations drew an "ex
cellent response” during its
two afternoons and nights of
patient diagnosis, according to
Mrs Ixtutse Thompson, exe
cutive director of the Clarke
County Unit of the American
Cancer Society (ACS).
The clinic, conducted annu
ally by the Clarke County ACS
auxiliary, saw 450 residents of
Athene and Clarke County.
Students are not admitted to
the program, Thompson said,
"because they can get the
same kind of treatment at the
campus Health Services faci
lity."
Participants in the program
got a complete pelvic examina
tion, a pap smear, and were
taught breast self-examination
by doctors conducting the pro
gram
Results of the test were sent
to a local laboratory and if
positive, the participant's doc
tor is notified. Thompson said.
The auxiliary, which is the
only ACS unit auxiliary in the
nation, has been conducting
the clinic for seven years, she
said.
"People do not get examin
ations." Thompson said. "We
get people in here in their 60's
and 70’s who have never had a
pap smear We feel the clinic
is an essential part of cancer
prevention and detection."
The clinics are staffed solely
by auxiliary members, and
take "about four months" to
set up each year, she said.
