The Georgia tennis team ran
their dual match record to 8-0
this past weekend by defeating
Ohio Stale at a 4 team tourna
ment in Tuscaloosa, Alabama
before dropping their first
match of the season 5-4, to the
host school on Sunday after
noon.
The Dogs, ranked number 10
in last week's national stand
ings. pul together whaf Head
Coach Dan Magill termed “one
of the finest efforts ever by a
Georgia tennis squad” in the
loss fo Alabama Georgia was
forced to face the Tide (also
nationally ranked i without top
man Charlie Ellis, who was
sidelined with a pulled muscle
in his shoulder.
Ellis, who was first believed
lo be suffering from bursitis in
his shoulder, will be out of.
action indefinitely, which is a
big blow to Georgia's hopes for
a sixth consecutive South
eastern Conference champion
ship
Against Alabama. Magill
moved all his men up one
notch and had top substitute
Ricky Diaz move in to play the
number six singles spot. Tim
Delaney, who was undefeated
at his usual number two posi
tion. suffered his first defeat of
the season to Alabama's Jeff
Robinson in three sets, 6-7, 6-4,
6-1, at number one. Robinson,
a freshman from California,
had beaten All-American Fran
cisco Gonzales of Ohio State
previously in the tournament.
Georgia's Tom Von Dohlen
was sensational in defeating
number two man Bob Deller in
straight sets 6-3 and 6-4. Bull
dog Captain David Dick also
played an outstanding match
in taking Bama’s Steve Pierre,
6-2, 4-6, 6-4. Diaz, last year's
SEC champion at number six,
kept his undefeated record for
the season intact with a con
vincing 6-2, 6-3 win over Mike
O’Leary.
Freshman Wesley Cash
faced Tide Captain Sam Vuille
at number four, and took the
first set from the senior star
6-4, and was tied at five games
in the second set, before the
veteran rode his experience to
a 4-6, 7-5, 6-2, victory.
At number five, Dane Pet-
chul ran into a red-hot Mike
Shore and lost in straight sets.
So the Dogs went into the
doubles tied at three all with a
chance to win but could only
manage to take one victory,
that at number three, and
dropped a very tough match.
In the doubles, the number
three team of Diaz-Cash put
together one of their finest
efforts thus far this season and
swept the team of Shore-
O’Leary by scores of 64 and
7-5. Dick-Delaney lost at
number one to Robinson-Pierre
6-1, 7-5, while Petchul-Von Doh
len faired no better losing to
Vuille-Deller 6-1, 64, at the
number two spot
On Saturday, Georgia was
slated to meet both Ohio State
and Tennessee Tech but hard
rains forced a cancellation of
the Tech match. In the after
noon, the Dogs took on Big Ten
power Ohio State, and won a
hard fought match by the
count of 6-3.
Tim Delaney got revenge
over the Buckeyes' John Botic-
ca for a loss at this year's
Princeton Invitational, taking
a tough three setter 7-6, 3-6,
6-3. Wesley Cash and Ricky
Diaz also won singles matches
for the Dogs while all three
doubles teams, Dick-Delaney,
Von Dohlen-Petchul, and Cash-
Diaz, also were victorious.
The Bulldogs returned home
to Henry Feild Stadium Tues
day for a meeting with highly
regarded Pennsylvania. Geor
gia swept the singles 6-0 with
Delaney, Dick, Von Dohlen,
Cash, Diaz, and Petchul all
copping wins, but all the
matches were hard fought
affairs with maty going to
tiebreakers.
Delaney had a tremendous
match with Penn’s Picky Mey
er, an All-American candidate
who was the top seed this year
at the Princeton tournament.
Delaney took a 7-5, 6-7, 64 win
in a match that saw fine play
by both competitors.
Georgia also won the num
bers two and three doubles to
run their record to 9-1 in dual
match competition.
The Bulldogs will see action
this week against both Ohio
University and Kalamazoo be
fore their big meeting with the
nation's number nine ranked
team, Princeton, this Saturday
at 2 p.m.
Carlo Rossi Burgundy
"The wine with the promise of a kiss”
Salute:
My name is "Carlo" Rossi. As you know, it
takes good grapes to make good wine. The grapes in
Carlo Rossi California Burgundy receive plenty of
sunshine during the day and cool breezes during the
night. The warmth makes them develop the body and
character I like in a burgundy. The coolness develops
the deep color and adds complexity to the flavor.
When you taste Carlo Rossi Burgundy, notice
the clarity and the deep, ruby-red color. Then
swirl it in your glass, sniff the wine and experience
the fruity, complex aroma, THE PROMISE OF A KISS TO
COME. Then taste the wine. Bacio dolce!
I believe you will enjoy Carlo Rossi Burgundy —
a wine made for you to enjoy as much as I do.
Ciao,
