Concert lacks humor, polish
Tlir Ited and Black. Friday. March 2*. I97S
Pane 3
By CALVIN THOMAS
If a band opts for comedy,
the members should first have
a good sense of what is and
isn't funny, then they should
try to acquire polish, since half
of comedy is delivery and exe
cution. Playing to a large
crowd at Memorial on the first
day of classes, Thermos
Greenwood and the Colored
People exhibited a good deal of
neither.
The main selling point of this
band is that they arc indeed
colored people. Thermos was
green, the guitarists were red
and white, the conga player
was blue and the drummer
was silver. Such visual gim
mickry might seem a pointless
distraction, but some people
need what help they can gel
Thermos was dressed in sort
of a cowboy-clown type affair
complete with ten-gallon hat.
One guitarist wore a white
Panama suit and the other
sported a neo-Cisco Kid attire.
Flanked on one side by a map
detailing the voyages and ex
pansions of European powers,
and on the other by a metal
Coca-Cola policeman, the Co
lored People were remnants of
a philosophy which supposed
that everything that is weird is
good and everything that is
absurd is funny.
Thermos' main talent seem
ed to be his ability to stick his
tongue out every few seconds.
The other members of the
band had apparently not mas
tered anything quite so impres
sive, and were dull by com
parison.
In one song, which described
an impending dance craze
called the “Trouser Worm,”
Thermos did a good impression
of a worm inching its way
across the stage In another,
an anti-police number entitled
"Who Gave A Monkey A
Gun?,” the guitarists gunned
Thermos down with their gui
tars and them simulated mas
turbation over his body as the
lights cut off
Just before a song, one gui
tarist muttered “When I joined
this band they didn't tell me I
had to dance around and act
like an idiot," which pretty
well summed up the whole act.
Some of Thermos' comedy
material might have been fun
ny if they had done it during
the sixties when the kitsch
hipness they were lampooning
was still prevalent. But to poke
fun at something that hardly
exists any more is something
less than satire, and even if
what they were attempting had
worked, Frank Zappa did it
much better ten years ago.
Which brings us, unfortu
nately, to their music. It is not
hard to play rock and roll well
and make it sound good, but
this band has yet to master the
musical form Their musical
abilities were just barely ade
quate and the sound was
generally blurry.

The guitarists used almost
every tired cliche imaginable,
and repetition hardly made
matters better. The lead gui

In fact, the most damning
thing about this band is its
complete lack of professional

quality of their performance.
When mistakes were made

things went well the band
smiled and congratulated it

that they really didn't care.
