ONE WAV td do lAts. he
said, was to let each individual
school elect its senator or
senators, depending on the
number of students in the
school, instead of having sev
eral schools lumped into broad
categories like Arts and Sci

“This should increase effi

presidential candidate Ginny
Kustin commented, "because
people will know who is rep
resenting their particular
school and can go to them
specifically for help "
She added that schools with
similar areas of interest could
collaborate in planning pro

was still looking for buses to
run the route which will be
called the “UGA Delight."
He and Kustin also men
tioned the possibility ol suing
the university sylem to elimin
ate the freshman residency
requirement although "be
cause of the new law (making
lawsuits against the university
system illegal), we would be
sort of a test case."
They stressed that the law
suit would be a last resort, to be
used only if negotiations with
the administration and Board
of Regents fell through.
Hathcock said he would like
to combine the off-campus
housing ratings proposed in the
platform with the Consumer
Guide also mentioned in the
party's plan.
Other proposed programs
outlined in the organization's
platform include the establish
ment of a student-run Student
Foundation to provide interest-
free loans to students, plans
for the establishment of a
student on the Board of Re
gents. and the continuation of
the faculty-course evaluation
program, the first installment
of which will be ready this
summer.

By STEVE BILLS

A proposed program of inter
disciplinary studies could be in
operation as soon as this tall,
according to Associate Dean
Charles Darby ol the College of
Arts and Sciences.
However, due to the financial
situation of the University,
implementation of the plan
could he put off for several
years, Darby said.

budget outline for the first
three years of the program's
operation, according to a mem
orandum from the office of the
Vice President for instruction.
The main problem lies in the
fact that the University has no
funds for new programs at this
time, Darby said.
“You're asking a department
lo give up a faculty member to
teach for the new program
instead of teaching courses for
Ihe department,” Darby said,
adding (hat the program would
also require secretarial help,
office space, and operating
funds that are not available
now.
In addition, the report must
include a three-year projection
(or enroll ment in the program,
a curriculum outline, and an
inventory of faculty members
directly involved, according to
the memorandum.
"We don’t see this program
as ever appealing to a large
group of students," Darby
said, explaining that the pro
gram would be aimed at "the
highly motivated, inquisitive
student" who might 'not be
served by a traditional course
of study.
As proposed by the Arts and
Sciences faculty senate, a stud
ent enrolled in the interdiscip
linary studies program would
meet with a committee of
advisors to arrange a course of
study suitable to him
Darby said he feels the
proposed program could be
compared to the Honors Pro
gram at the University, with
the difference that grades
would not be the criterion for
acceptance, but rather a desire
to persue a certain sort of
education.
Joseph Hammock, Univer
sity System assistant chancel
lor, said there has been discus-
ion between the University
and the chancellor's office at a
preliminary stage, but no for
mal request has been made yet
to establish such a program.
