Oscar show
Ray Bolger extravaganza a slap in the face

Last Monday night, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts
and Sciences held its annual Oscar” show Considered to
be the “biggie" o( the awards shows, the Oscar show
attempts to live up to the reputation each year by
presenting extravagant floor shows They usually fall flat
on their face
In past years the public has been subjected to Connie
Stevens jiving up "Live and Let Die," and Isaac Hayes in
the ultimate soul number "Shaft." complete with smoke
Lira Minnelli put on a fair opening number in 1974 in a skit
devoted to Oscar However. Monday night’s opening act
with Ray Bolger was a slap in the face. Not only did it
stink, it attracted maggots Since Bolger played The
Scarecrow in The Wizard of Oz, cutesy little Dorothy. Lion
and Tinman were there to dance into the pavilion along
with 50 or more dancers in glitter —
Despite the entertainment, the Oscar show was a success
because of what were selected as the winners of the year
For the most part, the Academy made selections which
deserved awards and met with public favor.
One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest became the big winner
of the year Not only did the film win Best Picture and Best
Adapted Screenplay, but awards also went to Jack
Nicholson iBest Actori. Lousie Fletcher (Best Actress) and
Milos Forman (Best Director).
Of interesting note is the fact that not since 1935 has one
film won the four top awards (Picture, Actor, Actress and
Director). That year, It Happened One Night with its two
electric stars Clark Gable and Claudette Colbert and
director Frank Capra Walked off with the golden statuettes
Even today there is no question that all of the awards to
It Happened One Night were deserved However, the same
cannot be said for Cuckoo's Nest. Louise Fletcher was quite
good as Nurse Ratched. but her role was neither
substantial nor particularly moving More demanding
acting was required and delivered by both Isabelle Adjani
(The Story of Adele II.) and Glenda Jackson (lledda).
Forman's award can also be questioned considering the
fact that Robert Altman (Nashville) and Federico Fellini
(Amarcord) were both nominated These other two
outstanding directors not only made two outstanding films
but wrote their names on every scene. Surely, the forte of
both Nashville and Aniarcord was directing. Without them,
the two films would never and could never have been
made
As for Jack Nicholson, the exact opposite is true. This
gifted actor not only deserved the award, fate demanded
that he receive it. Cuckoo's Nest was Nicholson's fifth
acting nomination and as yet, he had won no award. This
year however, he again turned in an excellent portrayal
and was destined to win. Only James Whitmore of Give
'Em Hell. Harry could even be considered as close
competition, and Whitmore’s role carried little hope for the
award since the film was actually only the filming of a
play
Barry Lyndon received four production Oscars including
Best Cinematography, Best Art Direction, Best Song Score
and Best Costume Design. The Academy was very wise in
selecting Barry Lyndon for these awards because it
deserved each one Although the film was obviously weak
in substance, it stood out in visual quality and aesthetics
like few films have achieved before Barry Lyndon was
definitely not the Best Picture of the year It was at the
same time, the most boring and most beautiful
As expected, .laws was somewhat snubbed when
nomination time rolled around a couple of months ago
Granted. Jaws is an escapist film with little to say Yet. its
impact as a horror film is tremendous Six people were
ultimately responsible for the tremendous success Jaws
attained 1-ast Monday, all six were awarded Oscars The
winners were Verna Fields (Film Editingi. John Williams
(Original Score), and Leonard Peterson, John A, Bolger.
Jr . John Mack and Don K Sharpless iSound) These
people made .laws exciting, thrilling and one of the scariest
motion pictures 1 have ever seen
Nashville's only recognition was for Best Song which
Keith Carradine won for "I'm Easy." Lee Grant won the
award for Best Supporting Actress for Shampoo although
Lily Tomlin. Ronee Blakely and two women that
weren't even nominated. Geralding Chaplin and Barbara
Harris, would have been much better selections All four
were in Nashville

AWARDS REVIEW
taking the* Best Supporting Actor award for his role but he
shouldn't have even been in the supporting category to
begin with More logical choices would have been Brad
Dour if for One Flew Over the Cuckoo'ft Nest or Burgess
Meredith for The Day of the Locust.
Frank Pierson, won the Best Original Screenplay award
for Dog Day Afternoon. Personally, it was pleasing to see
Dog Day Afternoon lose many awards considering the fact
that it wasn't really very good Yes. it contained a lot of
yelling, a lot of threats and a few laughs However, the film
was too long and too boring.
The last major award went to Dersu Ira la for Best
Foreign Language Film Considering the fact that it was
from the USSR, it most likely won on nonexistent detente
Scent of a Woman was a much better film
Overall, the Academy awards show was relatively good
Despite Ray Bolger and the ridiculous production number
for ‘How Lucky Can You Get” and Theme from
Mohogany. entertainment was sustained by some ot the
presenters (especially Goldie Hawn and George Segal>
However, each year I do come to the conclusion that
Americans would be happier if just for once, the Academy
would forget the production numbers and simply present
the awards At least, that way, the show might end on
time.

DOT approves priority
paving projects in county
The Clarke County Commis
sioners returned from Atlanta
last week with ‘‘a lot more
than was expected'' from the
State Department of Transpor
tation (DOT), Commissioner
Jewel John said
The commissioners made
their paving and road main
tenance recommendations to
DOT last Thursday, and were
approved for the second and
third project on their priority
list.
Although the commissi jners
had expected approval of the
Jefferson Street project, they
were surprised when DOT also
approved the widening and
paving of the Winterville Road.
John said.
The lop of th»* county’s
priority list, which was not
approved, is a joint Athens
Clarke County recommenda
tion for the widening and
paving of Baldwin Street.
There is a possibility ol
applying for federal funding
for the project she added.
