American Kennel Club <AKC> recognized breeds of dogs
were represented in the first Classic City Kennel Club
(CCKO All Breed Dog Show and Obedience Trial, held
Saturday
The Best in Show award went to Champion Shorlaine
Dynamic Flash, a male miniature schnauzer. A golden
retriever. Beckw ith s Eta of Spindrift won the highest score
in the obedience trials
The OCKC was organized in 1968 and authorized by the
AKC to hold sanction matches in 1974 The CCKC’s show
committees worked for a year in organizing Saturday’s
event and plans to hold a dog show annually for the next
few years, possibly increasing to biannual events in ’he
future. Show Chairman l>ois Morrison said
First round competition in the all breed show pitted the
dogs against others of their own breed, with points earned
going toward a championship title.

One point-w inning dog owner said. “I told my dog if he
didn’t get any points this show that was it forever. I think
he listened Now it’ll take showing him until he dies to get
a championship."
An old english sheepdog ow ner regularly grooms her dog
for two hours before a show and one half hour even when
there is no show
One poodle owner said the poodle hair cuts required by
the AKC came alxiut through a madman ’’
Both tin* english saddle cut and the continental cut
originated while the breed was used for hunting, according
to the poodle owner Tufts of hair are left on the dogs’ chest
and joints for warmth, but "we took these cuts and made
them absurd." she said
II Will.Fits vr the CCKC show had a number of beauty
produets available for their dogs, including mink oil coat
conditioner, balsam and protein acid balanced conditioner,
anti static detangler. wheat germ shampoo, herbal essence
shampoo, sunscreen, coat texturizer. beauty bath, cologne
and deodorant, hair spray, insect repellent, vitamins, and a
number of snacks
In the obedience trials, dogs entered novice, open and
utility competitions, trying to earn qualifying scores, which
go toward a championship
In the novice divisions, dogs ‘‘heel’’ on leash in a figure
eight and heel and follow verbal commands off of the leash.
The entire 0|>en division is run off-leash, with verbal
commands allowed.
Dogs in this division must come to the owner when
called, retrieve an object, complete a broad jump, and sit
and lie down for extended periods of time with the owner
out of sight
In the utility competition, the dogs must obey hand
signals from the owner in heeling, standing, sitting, lying
down, direct retrieve, directed jumping, and set distinction.
In direct retrieve, the ring steward places three gloves in
the ring, and the dog must retrieve the one the handler
appoints
For the directed jumping event, the owner designates one
of two hurdles which the dog must junip over before
jumping over the other hurdle
In set distinction, the owner handles one of five metal
and five leather objects, and the dog must retrieve the one
with his owner’s scent.
One obedience trained dog owner claimed that she had
trained her dog for the extended periods of sitting by
taking the animal to a duck pond and ordering it to stay
while the family set out to feed the ducks
One dog owner trained her St Bernard for one year and
two months before entering the open trials However, she
said training times vary depending upon “how much
perfection you want in the ring " Her training routine
includes a half hour every day with a dog which she noted
as particularly stubborn
WoTHF.lt o\\ NF.lt of an obedience trained dog said her
dog is a much lietter pet after completing obedience
training She said training gives shy dogs more self-
confidence and calms aggressive dogs "Some of the dogs
at these shows mind better than the children." she added

Ford Monday and blasted Ron

country’s military strength is
second to the Soviet Union
“I'm here to make known
my very high regard for our
President. Gerald Ford.
Westmoreland told a news
conference I know him to be
a man of the very highest
moral character ’
Westmoreland said Ford had
shown a “great deal of cour

by vetoing 41 bills that would
have increased the country's
inflation rate
“I ask you to name a
president who had the courage
to veto 41 bills. ' Westmoreland
said “By virtue of this action,
he (Ford* ha.: succeeded in
curbing the inflation in this
country."
Westmoreland said the Pres
ident had proven himself as a
leader and t>ecause of his
years as a Michigan congress
man knows how to handle the
job
"He knows the score." he
said "You don’t learn foreign
affairs running a state You
don't learn the bureaucracy of
Washington running a state "
The former Army Chief of
Stall disputed attacks by Rea
gan. Ford’s GOP opponent,
that the nation's military
strength is currently second to
the Soviet Union’s, but did say
the U S could drop behind the
Russians in the future.
"Mr Reagan is right as far
as looking into the future is
concerned. But we are not No

said
Westmoreland said while the
Soviet Navy has more ships
than the U S. Navy, "we have
carriers The Soviets have no
carriers."
