Ah, for those Midnight
Special days when Shawn
Phillips dangled his flowing,
blond locks before an awed
studio crowd Was it the hair
or the music that nurtured a
Phillips cult?
Phillips' concert Wednesday
evening in the Memorial
ballroom proved it was the
music.
Though a recent boating
accident has shorn Phillips of
most of his hair, the singer-
musician refused to assume
the role of Samson for the
crowd. Armed with a battery
of acoustic guitars and a
modes! double-necked electric
guitar, Fhillips charged
through two sets of incredible
length (80 and 100 minuteo.
respectively >.
The obvious question is this:
why is Phillips back on the
road after this past summer's
retirement announcement?
Didn't the 18-year and cigi.t-
album veteran already have
his long hair and guilar packed
for Italy?

the road alone to make up the
money."
Phillips' return to the
concert trail brings an exciting
and creative guitar style to the
forefront of a public abused
daily by cliched chords
Phillips is as \ersatile as he is
distinctive; he ran the gamut
from classical doodling to gut
funk in his pe»",.»rmance.
“Moonshine" (from Collab

he hadn’t lost any of his
previous musical skills, was
effectively illusory. Phillips
repeatedly turned to themes of
religion and nature in the
work
Though Phillips’ guitar prow
ess is virtually unquestionable,
his lyrics occasionally border
on the puerile. Phillips' verse,
for the mos‘ part, deteriorates
into hackneyed adages or
becomes inienso in its vocab-
ular exercise

Phillips create a sea of
emotions. Phillips' electric

enthralling with the added

Phillips' religious values
were admirably stated in
poetic terms. He encouraged
sharing of self between the
audience and himself.
The whoops of delight that
Phillips emitted were a search
for crowd response as much as
they were a display of
enthusiasm. He cares about his
audience and is genuinely
disturbed by the way politics
and business affect music.
"I’m trying to create art and
pit it against business,’’
Phillips said, “but it’s a losing
battle."

7:43. 9:25 - Mat. Sat. & Sun. 2:20. 4:06 . 5:55
In the second Psalm God asks this question, and then answers it. He
tells who the haathan ara, why they rage, and the consequences.
Webstar says “a haathan Is one who does not believe in the God of The
Bible." This definition fits In with what God says In this Psalm. The
consequences are that God laughs at man’s rebellion, speaks in His
wrath, holds them in derision and vexes In His sore displeasure — is
not needy the whole earth end the Inhabitants In a slate of vexation and
fear? Thou shall break them with a rod ot iron, Thou shall dash them
In pieces like a potter's vessel!” Think of the broken pieces of the
Jewish people scattered about over the lace of the earth, the nation to
whom this message first cama! About six million of them have been
broken and perished within recent years. Instead of raging and railing
at poor old Hitler It might be wise for ua all to consider how much our
rage against God's Laws may have been a cause, remembering what
Christ said to Pilate: ‘Thou couldest have no power at all against me,
except It were given thee from above." “Not one sparrow falls to the
ground without your Heavenly Father.” “The curse causeless shell not
come!"
It Is the devil In men that cause them to rage against God's Moral Law
Hit Ten Commandments! The devil, God and man's enemy. Christians
are not Immune from the devil entering into them. This statement is
based on the experience of The Apostle Peter whom Christ declared
"Blessed" because God had given a revelation at to whom Christ was.
but then in the context ot the seme passage Jeaus said to Peter: “Get
thee behind me Satan: thou art an offense unto Me: for thou savorest
not ot the things that be of God, but those that be of men." Mat. 16:13-
28. Peter wet saved through the Intercession of Christ who after telling
him of Satan's desire to possess him said: “I have prayed for thee—."
The devil gained entrance Into Peter because of his ignorance and
unbelief of God's |udgment that was to come upon Christ for the sins ot
mankind, their substitute. Peter waa not seeking his own selfish ends
when he left all to follow Christ He had gotten a vision of himself and
had said to Him: “Oepart from me; for i am a sinful man, O Lord! He was
seeking salvation, but even then he waa in great danger when the devil
got In him.
(Today the church la louay with those “who savorest not of the things
of God. but those that be of men," rejecting the plain teaching and truth
of The Bible that God's wrath fell on Christ to atone for the tint of all
mankind, provided they so accept Him, and It it to be feared that they
have no spiritual kinship at all with Peter. "He that despised Moses' law
died without mercy under two or three witnesses; of how much sorer
punishment, suppose ye. shall he be thought worthy of, who hath
trodden under toot the Son of God, and hath counted the blood of the
covenant, wherewith he waa sanctified an unholy thing, and hath done
despite to the Spirit of grace? For we know Him that hath said,
Vengeance belongeth unto me, I will recompense, saith The Lord. Ant
again, The Lord shall judge Hit people. It is a fearlul thing to fall into
the hands ot the Living God — For our God is a consuming fire." Here is
a suggestion to those whose eyes are open and are horrified at the
awful apostacy in high church circlet: If you are not in a position to
make an "overture" somewhere or other, then hasten and make a
"detour” to your prayer closet, shut the door, and in aacret lay the
matter before your Father which tees in secret, and wait on The Lord
patiently. He is more concerned than we are, and He has made oath
"That the earth shall be tilled with the knowledge of the glory of God as
the waters cover the sea."
The devil also entered into another of Christ's disciples, held his
ground, and finally carried him off to perdition a traitor and suicide! He
got into Judas because he was self-seeking, coveteous, a hog, a thief
stealing from the meager means of the little "splinter band” of Christ
and His disciples. (Have you stolen something, without repenting and
making restitution to the uttermost of your ability, and yet passing
yourself off as a Christian?) The devil knows he has a buddy, a friend
and partner in a coveteous, hoggish thiet. That may account for the
fact that the legion ot devils about to be cast out of one poor man
prayed Christ to let them go into the herd ot hogs. Beware of coveting
that which is another's, tor Christ gave the devils permission to enter
the hogs! However, the devils may have been disappointed in those
four-legged hogs when they ran wild and drowned in the sea, and
seemed to say by their action “we had rather be dead than red" devils!

Lob to be housed
in Clorke Howell
By MATT PRICHARD
Assistant news editor
The basement of Clarke
Howell is now being renova
ted to serve as a new
human performance labora
tory.
"It will be an instruction
and research lab for the
areas of exercise physi
ology. kinesiology and mo
tor learning,” Dr Kirk
Cure ton. assistant professor
of physical education and
director of the lab, said.
Lab sessions for classes in
these three areas will be
held in the new laboratory.
The research lab is for
faculty and graduate stu
dents in health, physical
education and recreation
who will deal with problem*:
in physical fitness and
human performance
The lab is housed tempor
arily in the second floor of
Clarke Howell, awaiting
completion of renovation of
the basement, “which was
in real bad shape. “Cureton
said.
Renovation of the base
ment has involved the
painting, fixing of broken
storm drains, tearing out
some walls, waterproofing
the remaining walls, lower
ing the ceiling, replacing
the old tile with vinyl-
asbestos tile. installation of p
central heating system and
installing new cabinets.
“The walls had been
leaking for a long time and
it had gotten worse and
worse," Hoyt Smith, project
supervisor for Physical
Plant, said
“We found ou! that the
walls had never been
waterproofed back in the
1930's when the building
was built Smith said.
“The ground had settled
and had probably broken
the drains, because during
the last heavy rain we had,
the water gushed out like a
branch," he added.
Clarke Howell was built
by the Works Progress
Administration <WPA) and
was formerly used as a
dormitory, according to
Smith. i
“The old plaster and
gypsum soaked up the
water that came through
the floor, so we pul cement
back in,” he said.
The project, which should
be completed before winter
quarter starts, will cost
$14,000. The waterproofing
alone, which was paid for
with Physical Plant money,
cost $5000.
