David McDonald
By DAN KIRI.KR
David McDonald has changed his attitude towards football in
the past six weeks Now he wants to stick around for a while
Some time ago. when he was still a quarterback. McDonald
told a companion at the Coliseum one day that he couldn't wait
for his four years to end
Now he can't wait for his fifth year to begin And he's found
a home in the defensive backfield. It's got its advantages over
quarterbacking the scout team
"What I said back then just goes to show how much my
attitude has changed," McDonald said "I don't know if I really-
meant exactly what I said back then, but it's all changed now "
And McDonald was certainly ready for a change when practice
Steve Dennis
opened this past August.
"I had knee surgery after my freshman year, and I realized it
was gonna be tough to get ahead of so many people." McDonald
said "Sometime I just realized that there was no hope for me at
quarterback with such good material we've got here
Three falls ago McDonald was starting, but then on the jayvee
team, at quarterback where he and Steve Dennis, now a
defensive end. split time for the 'Pups But his days at
quarterback were numbered After knee surgery and a year on
the scout team. McDonald found himself relegated to fourth team
behind Ray Goff. Matt Robinson and Tony Flanagan, despite an
impressive performance in the 1976 G-Day game Then he began
to realize just how versatile a quarterback can be
"If a good athlete has reasonable size in high school, he'll play
at quarterback in high school," McDonald said. “When the
coaches recruit a quarterback, they figure they’ve got a
quarterback, a receiver, a running back and a defensive back,
just about anything except a down lineman
"When I came down here, I knew Andy Johnson was leaving,
and it left quarterback wide open," McDonald said “I thought
with a little luck I could get some playing time as a freshman
and maybe get a good chance at the job, but it didn’t work out
that way "
Things seem to be working out better for McDonald these days.
"I'm real happy doing what I’m doing now," he said.
"Football's such a big part of a player’s life that when it's going
well, everything else does.”
STFVF. DENNIS AND DAVID MCDONALD
The path from offense to defense
By WAY DUCKWORTH
Assistant sports editor
The long list of ex-quarterbacks playing defense at Georgia
includes many successes and a few disappointments and right in
between is Steve Dennis.
“At first I wanted to play quarterback." Dennis said, and quite
understandably, if one considers the fame he weaved for himself
leading his Central High School team to the state championshp
game in 1974.
Dennis played some scout team quarterback, but after leading
his freshman team to a good season and a win over Tech's frosh.

he still did not feel there was room for many more signal callers.
His judgement proved correct. Presently Georgia has three
quarterbacks who could probably start for most teams in the
country.
During his stint on the scout team his path to defense was
cleared. "After I told them I wanted to try a place with better
opportunity to play, they switched me to safety.”
It was here that Dennis’ story strikes a remarkable
resemblance to that of senior defensive end Dicky Clark. “It’s
really funny the way things have worked out,” Dennis explained.
"I play second string behind Dicky right now and he has gone
through the same process—quarterback to safety to our present
position.”
As for Dennis’ life off the football field, he says there is little to
say. "I really don’t find much time for anything but study and
tootball. and Cindy of course.”
The "Cindy" to whom he alludes is more than just his fiancee,
she is also the daughter of the late Godfrey Steiner. Steiner, who
was Dennis' coach at Central, died of a heart attack in 1973, but
according to Dennis his influence lives on.
"He had a lot to do with my being able to play college
football," Dennis remembers. “His type of coaching was more
physical than those here. He would knock around a player to get
the job done. Here they don’t really do that kind of thing.”
Instead they move you around at Georgia. Yes, Steve Dennis is
happy to be travelling, playing some, and in line lor a starting
berth But. somewhere, maybe deeply hidden in his heart, one
senses Steve Dennis still scores touchdowns in his dreams.
