Cook-bright spot on
Saturday has made it even
foggier
Throughout spring practice,
the race for the starting signal
caller's job has been publicized
as a three-man race between
junior Tony Flanagan, and
sophomores Jeff Pyburn and
Steve Rogers. But Cook's
performance in last Saturday s
game has certainly changed
that

Cook's outstanding play
helped to add a touch of
excitement to an otherwise dull
and uninteresting game. And
more important, a three-man
race for quarterback has now
been blown into a four-man
race
Cook was the Bullpup's
starting quarterback last sea
son He threw for .144 yards for
a 46.8 percentage and account
ed for 6 touchdowns for the
pups. Cook’s best game was
the Pup’s 36-21 win over
Auburn in which he went 6 for
9 for 75 yards and one
touchdown and rushed for a
second TD.
A quiet individual. Cook was
notably modest when talking
abut his role in Saturday’s

game. "I thought I had a good
game. ’But the line protection
was great Plus everybody ran
well.
Left out of the sports pages
all during spring practice,
Cook did not seem too bitter
about his lack of publicity. “I
practiced well most of the
time." Cook said. ‘ And coach
es know better than newspaper
people anyway. But I don’t feel
bitter about my lack of
coverage A player should do
his playing on the field."
Oddly enough, when Cook
was quarterbacking at W.A.
Berry High School in Birming
ham. it was Assistant Coach
Jim Pyburn. who recruited
him "Coach Pyburn seemed to
really want me here at
Georgia." Cook said. "I saw
Matt Robinson and Ray Goff
would be graduating at the end
of my freshman year and the
quarterback job would be
open."
Cook also felt that he would
adapt easily to the Georgia
"veer" offense. "We ran an
offense similar to Georgia's in
high school, and I felt it would
be easy for me to play it
here."
In Saturday’s game. Cook
saw a chance to establish a
good position for himself going
into fall practice. "There was
a lot of pressure. Since Jeff
(Pyburn)was injured, I figured
I would get to play a lot So I
just went out to do as well as I
could.
Although fall practice is still
months away, Cook is already
preparing a run at the starting
quarterback job.
"1 feel like I have a good
chance as anyone," Cook said.
"It’s going to be a tough fight
though Tony Flanagan, Jeff
Pyburn. and Steve Rogers are
all excellent athletes. I'm just
going to have to work as hard
as I possibly can.”
Cook is very optimistic
about the team’s chances as a
whole. "We've got a lot of
talent on this team, especially
as far as defense goes. But our
offense is better than a lot of
people think.".he said. “We’ve
got great runners and if we
can fill out the gap at right
tackle and guard, we'll be
pretty good."
For the past two years, Head
Coach Vince Dooley has used
two quarterbacks to run the
of I ?nse. Cook welcomes this if
it happens again this fall. "I'll
play anywhere I'm needed,"
Cook said. "I’m a better
passer than a runner, so I
think that is where I would be
best. But wherever Coach
Dooley wants men. I'll play.”
