Foreign travel meeting slated
By SUSAN CLEMENTS
A campus organization is
holding a meeting to inform
students planning trips abroad
of money saving tips that may
be useful in their travels.
The Office of International
Services and Programs will
have a travel-abroad orienta
tion May 5 in North P.J from
7:30 to 9:30 p.m.
"The program will focus on
how to get by on a limited
budget and is open to any
interested student who is
thinking about going abroad,"
Sharon Finnegan, foreign stu
dent advisor, said.
The 1977 Student Travel
Catalog, published by the
Council on International Edu
cational Exchange CIEE), is
also available to students in
the International Services Of
fice, 317 Academic According
lo Finnegan, this catalog can
help a student plan the best
possible trip, at the lowest
possible price
“The CIEE, having been a
major force in U.S. travel
abroad for 25 years, sponsors
charter flights, organizes stu
dent tours in different parts of
the world, and assists students
in securing important docu
ments needed to travel a-
broad,” Finnegan said.
Student-alumni tourney
arranged for Saturday
By SWANN SEILER
City Fditor
Last minute preparations are still being
made for the first annual student-alumni tennis
tournament.
The tournament has been scheduled for this
Saturday from 9 a m. to 5 p.m. at the Henry
Feild Memorial stadium.
According to Bob White, advisor to the
student-alumni association, the purpose of teh
tournament is to encourage more interaction
between the association and the student body.
“There are numerous students on the campus
that haven’t even heard of the association. We
want to get their attention so they’ll know what
we’re all about.’’ White said.
The special celebrity for the tournament will
be President Carter’s son Jack, who will begin
playing on court one at 9 a m. with his partner
Pierre Howard, a slate senator from Decatur.
They will play against Leonard Postero. of
Leonard’s Losers, and Woody Chastain of Bull
dog sporting Goods.
In addition to Carter, representatives from
soroities. fraternities and dorms will be
compete in various divisions. Also playing will
be representatives from housing, food services,
the administration, alumni and student
organizations.
Finals for the tournament will begin at 4:30
p.m.
Athens area merchants have donated over
$250 in prizes which will be given away during
the tournament. Anyone is eligible to register
for the prizes.
Scheduled tournament play will be posted at
the courts Saturday. Additional information
can be obtained by calling the Alumni House at
2-2251.
The CIEE also sponsors
work abroad job programs for
eligible students, but accord
ing to Finnegan, most coun
tries require that a student
know the country’s language.
There are several tips a
student should know to travel at
the lowest price, according to
Finnegan
“Students can purchase a
youth hostel card, good for one
year, for $11. This enables a
student to find simple but
comfortable sleeping accom
modations for $1.50 $3 per
night,’’ Finnegan said.
Another important thing to
know. Finnegan said, is that
student Eurail passes are
available for two months
travel in 13 European countries
for $230
A student needs to get a
student international I D card
in order to get a Eurail pass
This cars, available in the
International Student Office,
enables a student to become
eligible for other discounts like
intra-European flights, dis
counts for museums, student
tours, and other railroads not
affiliated with the Eurail.
Finnegan stated
The only stipulations in
volved are that the student has
to have been a full-time
student during one quarter of
the current academic year,
have a small photo of himself,
and pay a $2.50 fee.
Air fare for the advanced
booking charter flights need to
be paid 50 days before
departure, according to the
travel catalog, which tells the
dates the money is due. “These
flights are open to the public at
the same low price given to
students.’ Finnegan said.
The Office of International
Services and Programs also
has a reference library on
work and travel abroad.
“Students need to call to make
an appointment for a personal
interview." Finnegan said
