Liz Murphey, the women's golf coach describes it as "the
biggest college sporting event for women this year," It takes
place this weekend in the form of the Women's Southeastern
Intercollegiate Championships (WS1C* at the University course.
This is the same tournament that has in the past been referred
to as the Georgia Invitational. The name change was effected
greater recognition, according to Murphey
"We decided on the change because other sports on campus,
namely, the men's swimming and golf have been using it and
people are more familiar with it,” she said. "So we just put
“women" in front of SIC."
Another change this year has to do with the time span in the
tournament. In the past it has been a 36-hold event but this year
it has been increased to 54
Southeastern teams make up the bulk of the 17-team field, with
a sprinkling of Northern teams (Minnesota, for example). The
two favorites are Florida, last year's champion and Furman, the
defending national champion The fight for third place is less
certain, with a number of teams in the fight. Georgia, Alabama
and North Carolina all have a shot and the winner is anybody's
guess Murphey is just as confused on this point as anyone else.
Ruggers
Georgia’s women's rugby
club lost a tough one this
weekend when they fell to
Florida State 8-4. The Semi-
noles came into town with the
Tallahassee Tournament
’hampionship and the Jack
sonville Tournament title un
der their belts, and gave the
Dogs one of their tougher
matches of the season.
The match progressed
smoothly until the second try.
lose 8-4
With a pile-up at the try line,
the referee made a controver
sial decision, giving the try to
the Seminoles.
However the Dogs were
never out of the match, and
Georgia won all but one scrum.
Georgia's forward, played
extremely well, dominating
FSU. but the Dogs had
problems getting the ball to
their backs, giving the Semi
noles the advantage.

"WHY DO THE HEATHEN RAGE?"
Psalms 2 and Acts 4:25
This question Is the first clause ot the first sentence ot The
Second Psalm of God Almighty s Book! God Himself is quite
an Author! Quite an Editor! Quite a Columnist! He is King of
Kings. Lord of Lords — Where the word ot a king is. there is
power — The Word of God is quick and powerful —He
spake and the worlds came into existence, including Milky
Ways and Galaxies millions of "light years ' distance We like
to hear that great song "How Great Thou Art" but how is it
thst we don t like to read His Book and hear all He has to say.
and learn of Him whom to know is Eternal Life? In the Old
Testament there are approximately seventeen hundred and
fifty passages (1750) prefaced by "Thus saith The Lord."
"God spake." or kindred words that indicate God Himself is
speaking. But our generation has but little. If any. time for all
that talk: "The Ancient of Days is out of date." Is It not so. Mr
Modernist. D. D ? Nevertheless, He holds the world world In
His Hand! He holds the tiny baby in His Hand! In commenting
on Jesus statement regarding the littte children: "Of such is
fhe Kingdom of Heaven." someone has observed that after
the little children appear on the scene as a little bundle from
heaven.” dwell and are in the hands of parents, school
teachers, preachers, etc. whose hearts are "deceitful above
all-things, and desperately wicked," and never find It out,
that of many of these children after a few years it might truly
be said "Of such is the kingdom ot hell and devil!" Where is
the sincere grown person that don't feel ashamed and res
ponsible that there are grounds tor such an observation?
Yes. God Is quite an Author He used about forly different
secretaries over a period of about 1500 years to produce His
Book. The Bible, and In fhe closing words warned men not to
meddle with It by taking from, or adding to! Marlin Luther
was quite an intellectual giant, and a very learned men Hear
what he said regarding some ot the great of the earth who
have raged against The God of The Bible: "Infinite poten
tates have raged against This Book, and have sought to des
troy and uproot it — king Alexander the Great, the princes ot
Egypt and Babylon, the monarchs ot Persia, of Greece, and
of Rome, the emperors Julius and Augustus — but they noth
ing prevailed; they are all gone and vanished, while (he Book
remains, and wili remain for ever and ever, perlect and entire,
as it was declared at first." Take heed Modernist!. New Tran
slators. scorners and scoffers, you too will all soon be gone
and vanish, but The Book will remain because God Is its
Author. Jesus Christ said of It: "The Scriptures cannot be
broken." Take courage and re|oice fundamentalists. John
Wesley was called a "Bible Bigot" In mockery. But where are
the mockers?
Consider this Great Author and His Book scribes and
writers of various and sundry kinds and assortments, all the
way from the respected preachers, editors, columnists, etc.,
down to the miserable wretches that vomit and puke forth
their vile and obscene filth that corrupts and perverts the
sacredness of marriage vows and God ordained sex
relations, affecting perversely even the unborn generation —
If God permits another one to arrive. (The God of The Bible In
ordering the utter destruction of the Canaanites said they
were so vile that the land itself vomited them out — maybe
our time is near!) There is a definite connection between
high grade and low grade scribes mentioned above, in that
when the "highs" neglect or reject the "wisdom that comes
down from above." savor of the things that be of men and not
those of God, then the door is gradually opened for the devil
to enter with his cohorts and men and society sink lower and
lower. The Greet Author says in His Book that every idle
word that men speak they shell have to give account of In the
day of judgement. Look to yoursetves! Look at that greet
stack of stuff on file of your verbal effusions your mind has
manufactured for the pulpit, tor the newspapers, for
magazines, etc., to feed the minds of men. women and
children. It may be that some writers don t keep a file of their
writing, but as soon as they get their check burn the junk and
laugh at the "suckers." But God has It all on file In your
record and He says He will bring every secret thing Into
judgement, whether it be good, or whether it be evil
Here is a suggestion if you are inte.ested in having a vital
and successful Christian experience: Consider and meditate
on Joshua 1:8. and Daniel 1:8. and Galatians 1:8. Sincere
meditation on God's Law will show you that you are a lost
soul, and point you to the Saviour. Purpose to obey Him and
stick lo your purpose like Ruth did tu Naomi (Ruth 1:16 and
17): and like Daniel did to hit purpose, and he and his friends
gained the victory in fhe fiery furnace and In the lions den.
Then hold fast to Galatians 1:8 and the apostates, the false
prophets, the false preachers and the devil won't be able to
get you.

"We are hoping for a third place finish,” she said, “but
Alabama beat us on our course a couple of weeks ago and North
Carolina has come on strong lately But I feel our women have
not lived up to their potential this year and with them playing on
our course who knows what can happen.”
Maybe the women have not lived up to Murphey’s expectations,
but they still appear to be headed for the sunny beaches of
Hawaii for the Nationals in June.
‘‘We have to turn in our top 10 scores of the year to the national
committee by Monday and they judge to determine who
qualifies,” she said. “Right now we stand at 317 and I think 320
will make it, so it looks like we have a good chance.”
This weekend's tournament is therefore the last from which the
women can submit scores. But it is unlikely that they will shoot
any scores that are better than the present ones. The reason, of
course, is that the University course is one of the toughest in the
nation. One positive note here, though, is that the competition
will also have the same problems with the course.
"The scores will probably be higher in this tournament than
the others because the other courses were much easier," she
said.
Murphey is already looking forward to next year. She has been
actively recruiting Terry Moody, an Athens high school senior.
But there is a catch, a big one.
The catch is that almost every women’s golf program worth its
salt it also pursuing Moody. So much in demand is she that it is
almost a daily occurrence for the Atlanta papers to call and ask
Murphey her progress in the matter. Furthermore. Sports
Illustrated magazine has shown an interest in doing a feature on
the fact that if Moody does sign with Georgia it will be the third
brother-sister combination on golf teams here Her brother is
currently on the men’s golf team and the two other brother-sister
combinations are Carol and Robert Donald and Sandy and Jay
Lumpkin.
Getting Moody’s signature on a letter of intent could mean
great things for women’s sports here in general. It is the sad
truth that no women’s sports are setting any attendence records
(the golf and gymnastic teams had the only winning records) and
the signing of an athlete like Moody could encourage more top
women to come here.

IN CORAL GABLES
Netters face biggest trial
When the tenth ranked
Georgia tennis team travels to
Coral Gables, Fla. this Satur
day to play number 7-ranked
Miami, the nation’s winning-
est coach will be defending his
home ground against the
second winningest coach in
NCAA tennis history.
Coach Dale Lewis of Miami
assesses the 1977 edition of his
perennial powerhouse this
way: "We may not be as
strong as two years ago (when
Miami finished second in the
(NCAA) but we are stronger
than last year ” (a tenth place
finish). To relate this quote to
the Georgia match this week
end. consider that two years
ago when the Bulldog squad
last traveled to Miami. Geor
gia was a 8-1 loser. Last year,
Georgia swept the singles, an
unprecedented feat against
Miami, enroute to a 7-2 win.
These results alone should be
enough to insure a hotly
contested match but as the
saying goes, there is more
The match Saturday is for
the number 1-ranking in Region
3. Translated into terms that
hit home, the first place team
in each of the eight regions
receives an automatic invita
tion to the NCAA team
championships. The other eight
teams participating in the
championships are to be
invited at-large. This is to say
that the eight next best teams,
regardless of region, will get
invited to Athens. This being
the case, the only sure way a
team has to participate is by
being ranked first in their
region Georgia, as well as
Miami, feels deserving of that
ranking and both teams will be
out to prove it.
Miami takes a 18-2 record
into Saturday's match. One of
the losses was at second
rankc*d Trinity and the other
loss came this past weekend in
Gainesville agaist Florida.
Both losses were on the road
which points to the fact that
the Hurricanes simply do not
lose at home. The last and the
only time Georgia beat Miami
in Coral Gables was in 1974
and Miami has lost at home
only once since then. The
consolation to this perilous
situation is that Miami has
been without the services of
No. 2 singles player, Ron
Meyers, who has been out of
the line-up with mononucleosis.
There is the suspicion in the
Georgia camp however, than
Meyers has been held out of
action the last week or so, in
order for his to recuperate
fully in time for fhe match
Saturday.

Cup team. Schon will face
Kickv Diaz of Georgia. Bulldog

of Georgiawill try and recover
from his recent illness and
snap his losing streak against
Miami’s Ian Duvenhagh, a-
nother South African on the
Hurricane’s roster. The final
singles match will have
Georgia's Tim Delaney taking
his aggressive style of play to
Miami's I.ance Dcnnitt.
Doubles play may very well
decide the match and Geor
gia's three fine teams, Ellis-
Cash, von Dohlen-Diaz, and
Delaney-Kanganathan will be
paired up against Eagleton-
Gerathaty, Schon-Duvenhagh ,
and Dennitt-Etienne for
Miami.
Georgia Coach Dan Magill
would not predict a Georgia
win, but when pressed for a
comment the second winning
est coach in NCAA tennis
history said that one can count
Miami’s home losses over the
last twenty years on the
fingers of both hands. Magill’s
strongest comment was
one of hope
Co-captain Tom von Dohlen
translated that hope into
something a litle more con
crete, "If we play well, we’ll
win."
Although von Dohlen's com
ment was definitely tongue-in-
cheek, the most important
match of the rear for both
teams. Georgia and Miami,
comes down to that simple (?)
situation.
