Remember the liahy boom
and the hordes ot students that
descended on the colleges in
the tins’' itie boom is gone now
It reached a peak in the late
tins leaving a small hut steady
college enrollment increase for
the tuture, according to
William Hudson, director of
campus planning.
"We don t need to go into the
backyard and cry." he said.
Hudson sees a readjustment to
a low er increase in enrollment
There will be a gradual
increase in the number of
students, hut not in the high
numbers seen in the 60s
"There is no way we could
maintain the lttfiu-70 enroll
ment increases." Hudson said.

attended college in the 60s. he
added.
In the five years after 1960.
there was a 65 per cent
increase in enrollment at the
University There was a 47 per
cent increase between 1965 and
1970. Hudson said Then, after
1970. enrollment increase
dropped to 17 per cent, a result
of children from another
decade coming to college
The Office of Campus
Planning takes these figures
into account and tries to insure
adequate planning for future
physical facilities Because of
the enrollment spurt of the last
decade, the University has
fallen behind in the building of
new physical facilities.
"We are just trying to get
back to 1960 levels." Hudson
said. In 1960 there were 387
square feet ’of building space
per student In 1975 there were
323 square feet per student. A
side effect of the drop in
enrollment increase is a
chance to "catch up" to the
I960 level. Hudson claims that
even the I960 level was not
good enough
Campus Planning has three
priority projects at present At
tin* top of the list is an
academic building for North
Campus Only partial funding
for the $28 million building has
been approved and the Univer
sity is waiting for more funds
from the Board of Regents.
Hudson said.
The building is to be built in
the parking lot north of the
business building, and will
provide classroom space for
the Business School and
Environmental Design
Another important project is
an addition for the law school
library. Present space per
student in the library is not
adequate, according to Hud
son Standards are defined, he
said, by a national accrediting
board Campus Planning hopes
to obtain authorization to
prepare a plan soon, and begin
work with the architects.
A third project is the
planning for a new student
center. “A new student center
is at the top of our list, after
the Law School addition and
the academic building,” Hud
son said Before plans can be
made, though, the Board of
Regents must give approval
Campus Planning first asked
for such approval in 1967 and
was turned down.
Last fall top Univeristy
administrators met with local
state legislators. After the
issue of faculty salaries, it was
decided that if additional
money could he found, top
priority would be given to
funding for planning of the
student center. Funds could
not be found
Hudson calls the present
student center "just pitiful."
He cites the fact that out of
over 22,000 students, only 7000
live in the dorms A place to
meet people and get involved
with different activities is
needi»d for the 15,000 students
who commute, he said.
Although the future student
center has yet to reach the
planning stage. Hudson said,
"we are very optimistic about
the future."
