Dogs
win
two
By JANET WARD
The Georgia baseball team
has had a rather drab season to
be sure, but along the way
there have been a few stellar
performances that bear men
tioning. Namely the pitching of
Chuck Fore and the hitting of
David Lanning.
Fore did the nearly impos
sible Saturday, picking up two
wins in two games when the
Dogs stopped the Tennessee
Vols 8-0 and 13-2 in a
Southeastern Conference dou
ble-header. Lanning, on the
other hand, has just broken the
school record for hits in a
season, an incredible feat for a
freshman Lanning has knock
ed 63 hits so far this season,
breaking the old school record
of 61 set by Bubba Wilson in
1976
But now about the team. ..
Well, the Dogs won Fore's two
and then lost on Sunday and
are now mathematically elimi
nated from any possible
playoff spot.
With the doubleheader, the
Dogs looked as if they could
actually make a go of it.
Georgia’s bats were hot
Saturday and the dogs connec
ted for 23 hits in the two games
to the Vols’ paltry six. Leading
the offensive punch for the
Dogs were third baseman
Lanning with a four for eight
day, second baseman Don
Clatterbuck, three for five,
leftfielder Joe Stewart with
four hits in five trips to the
plate, Gil Mende two for two,
and Bo Sorrells with two hits in
three trips.
But the story of the game
was not hitting. Fore turned in
perhaps his best afternoon of

Fore gave up only six hits in two starts Saturday
the year, allowing the Vols
only one hit in the first game
and three in the second.
Fore had a no-hitter going
into the fifth inning of both
games. Tennessee shortstop
.Steve Pinkham picked up the
Vols’ only hit in the first game
with a single. Fore struck out
eight, while walking only two.
With the two wins, Fore is now
8-3 on the season Late inning
relief by David Geyer saved
the second game for Fore.
Geyer pitched two innings and
gave up two runs in recording
the save.
Sunday's matchup was a
little more meaningful to the
Dogs and a little less
productive. Georgia picked up
nine hits to Tennessee’s 10 and
lost the game by a 4-3 score.
Clatterbuck, shortstop Bubba
Kizer and catcher Lonnie
Morris led the Dogs in hitting.
Tennessee put the game
away in the top of the fourth on
a two-out home run by Tommy
Cook, to give Georgia starter
Alan-O'Neal his sixth loss of
the year against two wins.
The loss drops the Dog's
overall record to 19-22, and
their SEC record to 8-12.
Georgia travels to Atlanta
today to play arch-rival
Georgia Tech.
BULLDOG NOTES: Lanning
broke Bubba Wilson’s record of
61 hits in a season, picking up
his 63rd in 157 trips to the
plate. Fore tied the Georgia
record for most wins in a
season with his eighth. Co
holders of the record are Jack
Roberts (1953) and Allen
Parrish (1954) who both had
eight wins on 12 outings.

The Georgia tennis team
succumbed to the spectre of
home court advantage at
Miami Saturday and dropped
their second match of the year
6-3
Georgia played the Hurri
canes an even match through
the singles All-American John
Eagleton o( Miami defeated
Georgia’s Charlie Ellis, 6-4,
6-4
The other Miami singles
wins came at numbers three
and five. At No. 3, Ricky Diaz
of Georgia played Tito Schon a
very tough match that could
have gone either way. Schon,
an experienced Mexican Davis
cupper however, held on for a
2-6, 6-1, 6-4 win Elango
Ranganathan continues his
uncharacteristic losing skid at
No. 5 for Georgia bv dropping
a 3-6, 6-3, 6-1, match to
Miami’s Lance Dennitt.
The Dogs offset these close
singles losses with some very
good play at numbers two, four
and six. Wes Cash had little
problem with Miami's No. 2,
John Gerathaty, defeating him
6-4, 6-4. South African Ian
Duvenhagh proved to be little
mystery to Bulldog co-captain
Tom von Dohlen as the Big
Red Machine rolled to a 6-2,
6-4 win At No. 6, Georgia’s
Tim Delaney survived some
shakey play early and recor
ded his 21st win in 22 matches,
beating Joe Etienne, 4-6, 6-0,
6-3. In that match, Delaney
sprained an ankle but two or
three days rest should return
him to playing form.
After splitting the singles the
pressure began to mount on
the doubles. What had been a
momentumless match up until
that point began to shift when

The Bulldog track team won
every race that they ran on
Saturday and returned home
from Atlanta’s Lakewood Sta
dium riding high on an
80'2-64*2 victory over rival
Georgia Tech.
It was a “sweet-revenge"
win for Head Coach Lewis
Gainey, who vividly remem
bers the nearly 50-point beating
the Tech squad handed him
last year in Athens.
“This was a great victory,”
the emotionally-charged Gai
ney said after the meet. "It
was the best team effort we've
had since I've been coaching
here.”
Another Bulldog to feel that
success was a result of team
unity was Georgia's decathlete
Steve Benedict, who won the
pole vault at I4'6’"; finished
second in the 100-meters at
10.95; second in the javelin at
203’3”; and ran the third leg of
the winning 440-relay team
“To beat Georgia Tech is a
great thrill," Benedict explain
ed. “After two frustrating
years with Tech we beat them
as a team. We beat them
simply with team effort.”
Perhaps the clearest evi
dence of this team effort was
displayed with the score close,
and only two events remaining.
The tally read Georgia 66> 2 ,
Tech 64W with only the
three-mile run and one-mile
relay left in the meet.
However, the tenacious Bull
dog distance men put the meet
out of reach with a clean
sweep of the three mile. John
McCartney won it in 15:13.7,
and was followed by Gary
Gayman at 15:28.1 and Tom
Stevens at 15:28.3.
Bulldogs Richard Kremer,
Robert Stephens, Luis Bermu
dez and Bill Powell then came
on to wrap it up with a 3:20
clocking in the mile relay.
In faster action, sprinter Bill
Breeding won the 100-meter
and 200-meter dashes in 10.3
and 22.0 respectively
Bill Fincher took first in the
110-meter high hurdles, with a
clocking of 14.4. He also won the
440-intermediate hurdles in
54.8, but did so a bit more
dramatically. The sophomore
from Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.
stumbled on one of the early
hurdles, and really had to turn
it on to get back in the race
"When I fell, I put my hand
down to catch my balance (a
trick that he said he learned
while skateboarding through
Athens), but by the eighth
hurdle I knew that I had it,”
Fincher explained
The 440-relav race was also
won by the pounding feet of the
Georgia thinclads Powell,
Kremer, Benedict and Bree
ding won the event with a time
of 41.85.
Powell again won in the
400-meter run. He clocked a
time of 48.7, as teammate
Bermudez followed in second
with a 49 2 time.
The 800-meter run saw
another Bulldog sweep with
Kremer winning it in 1:51.3.
John McGuire took second at
1:52.5 and Steve Biernacki
came in third at 1:54.3.
Tony DiPaola was also a
winner for Georgia. He captur
ed first in the 1500-meter run
with a 3:53 3 time
Other scores for Georgia
included: Roy Dykes, second
in the high jumps at 6’11",
James Barrineau, third in the
high jump at 6’11”, Brian
Winham. third in the 110 and
440-hurdles at 14.8 and 56.6;
Jim Casson, second in the shot
put at 49’1 1 ; Shelby Sanford,
third in the pole vault at 14’;
and Bob Clark, third in the
triple jump at 44’.

Eagleton-Gerathaty went on to
win the match, 7-6, 6-4
Momentum shifted further to
Miami's side when moments
after Ellis-Cash’s tiebreaker
loss, Georgia's von Dohlen-

Etienne-Schon. Etienne-Schon
won that match, 7-6, 7-5. In
other doubles pairing, Delaney-

The loss puts the Dogs at 20-2
for the season. Losing to
Miami also throws some doubt
on Georgia’s chances for an
