IN WSIC TOURNEY
Golfers end fourth
By l>avid Westin
It seems that the more things change, the
more they slay the same
At least that is the way it happened this
weekend in the 17-team field Women’s
Southeastern Intercollegiate Championships
(WSIC) at the University golf course
Wholesale changes were the rule in this
year's tournament, including a name and
length change What for five years had been
called the Georgia Invitational was changed to
WSIC and the tourney was increased from 36 to
54 holes
But in the end, none of this made any
difference as far as which team dominated the
event Florida won the team championship for
the third time in the five-year history of the
tourney The Gators easily outdistanced their
closest rival, Furman, by nine strokes
Georgia, which had hoped to finish third,
faltered somewhat on the first day of play, but
came back to grab fourth place honors Coach
Liz Murphey attributed the high scores on
Friday to an over-anxiousness which the
women snapped out of by Sunday
"The women were really psyched up on
Friday and played the front nine well, but they
got nervous on the back nine and it showed in
their scores." she said
The highlight of the tourney was the play of
medalist and 1975 United States Amateur
champion Beth Daniel Daniel not only broke
the course record with a 68 on Saturday but she
did so in a very convincing manner She
shattered the previous women's record by four
strokes in a round which she later admitted
could have been much better
Daniel is at a stage in her golfing career that
she. although just a junior, could easily
compete on the pro tour In fact, she did just
that two weeks ago and finished 14th overall
and low amateur Even with the increasing
purses on the women's tour. Daniel has chosen
to play oul her senior year at Furman From
the way she golfed circles around her rivals
(she won bv nine strokes i this weekend, it looks
like she will be a top pro player when she does
join the circuit
As far as other women fared, Florida's Lori
Barbacz was runnerup w ith Daniel’s teammate
Betsy King three strokes behind her
Behind Florida and Furman and ahead of
Georgia in the team play came South Florida.
North Carolina came in fifth
Georgia's Murphey felt Daniel's 68 was a
groundbreaking score in more ways than one.
"She broke through the psychological
barrier that said women could not break par
here she said Because of that, the play was
much better than last year and I'm sure it will
get better "
According to Murphey. her team is
struggling against another type of mental
barrier, one which she feels has not been
broken through yet
"Individually, I really think our top five
women are capable of breaking 80 out here
regularly.'' she said, "but only two did this
weekend "
This problem was especially true in the case
of seniors Faula Morabito and Dawn Young
Neither lived up to previous performances in
what was their last tournament before the
nationals in June Morabito had 91-82-85 while
Young fared slightly better at 86-81-79
The other members of Georgia's team were
Carol Donald (82-80-791. Donna Noonan 184-83-80)
and Sherri Kamens (85-92-85).
The biggest winner in this tournament,
however, was not any individual but women s
golf In a move that showed the community
support the women enjoy in Athens. $6000 was
raised from local merchants for the
tournament
That fact, plus the friendly atmosphere that
surrounded the tournament, bodes well for the
future of women's golf here

The Dogs got off to a good
start in the first half of the
match scoring three goals to
Carolina's one Richard Ray
accounted for two of the
first-half Georgia tallies and
Hugh Beasley took care of the
other. Carolina's lone goal of
the first half, and of the game,
came on the strength of a free
penalty kick against the Dogs.
The second half of the game
was dominated by defensive
play. The Georgia team could
manage only one goal against
a stingy Carolina defense; That
goal, by Steve Waldrop, put the

The suu shone brightly on
the Georgia women’s tennis
team Thursday afternoon as
they beat Brenau College for
the second time this season
The Bulldogs completely dom
inated the Brenau netters en
route to a 9-0 victory.
The breezy afternoon saw
the women netters out-hustle,
out play and generally out
class the Brenau team. The
Georgia players took eight of
the nine matches in straight
sets.
In the afternoon singles
matches the Brenau netters
managed to win only a total of
five games against the tough
Bulldogs, dropping ail six
matches in straight sets.
Individually, at No. I singles.
Georgia's Janet McClelland
easily disposed of Lilia Sherrill
6-1, 6-1.
At No. 2, (the most compete
tive of the singles matches),
Chris Marshburn bested Bre
nau's Martha Baker in straight
sets 6-1, 6-3. Playing at the No
3 spot for Georgia. Debi
Snelling encountered little
problem as she breezed by
Diana Donaldson 6-0, 6-0.
Georgia’s Cathy Young also
encountered little competition
as she beat Brenau’s Debi
Young in straight sets 6-2, 6-0.
In similar manner. Bulldog
Carole Sims disposed of Sharon
Lewis in a quick 6-0.6-0 match.
Rounding out Thursday’s
singles action at No. 6,
Margaret Martin beat Bre
r.au s Kimberly Jumper by a
6-2, 6-1 margin.
In doubles play, the action
was more competitive even
though the Georgia netters
swept the three matches as
well.
Georgia's Young and Sims
teamed up against Sherrill and
Baker in the first doubles
competition and after a tough
first set, breezed to a 6-4, 6-1
score.
At No, 2 doubles, Martin and
Vivian Partinel teamed to beat
Brenau's combo of Young and
Lewis 6-3, 7-5. After winning
the first set, Martin and
Partinel fell behind in the
second set before recovering to
post a 7-5 victory in the match.
The No. 3 doubles match
rounded out the day's competi
tion with Georgia's Pat Pee
ples and Lynn Landrum taking
a come from-behind victory
over Brenau's Donaldson and
Lewis 3-6, 6-0, 6-3 The match
added a rare dimension of
excitement to an otherwise
bland afternoon.
With the win, the Bulldogs
stretch their seasonal record to
12-5. Brenau drops to 5-5 on the
year.
The women netters will
again see action today as they
host Auburn in an afternoon
match beginning at 2 30 p m
