As a collegiate football
player completes his senior
year of competiton. he faces
the ultimate stepping stone;
the day of truth, so to
speak the National Football
League’s (NFL) annual draft,
when he finds out if he will be
given the chance to prove his
skills as a professional
Two Georgia football players
successfully reached that step
ping stone late Tuesday
afternoon when they were
selected during the first day of
the two-day draft, sometimes
tabbed a “slave market" by
opponents

tackle last season were chosen
in the fourth round of the 1977
draft.
Leavitt, a three year starter
for the Dogs who shattered all
pre-existing Georgia kicking
records en route to his being
named All-SEC. was chosen
sixth in the fourth round by the
Atlanta Falcons.
“I really don't care who I go
to. Leavitt had said some
weeks ago “I just want to get
the chance to play Sure I
would probably be happier at
some cities than others but.
like I say. I’m not going to be
picky."
Leavitt had been contacted
by many NFL clubs and it was
no secret he was a major focue
of Kansas City Chiefs talent
scouts. In recent weks he could
be seen in public wearing a
Kansas City football jersey
with his name stitched on the
back
Still attending school in
Athens. Leavitt was unavaila
ble for comment after his
selection announcement was
made
Wilson is a completely
different story, however.
After flanking offensive
guard Joel Parrish on the
Bulldog line, the pair surpri
singly signed contract with the
Canadian Football League
(CFL> for near-identical con
tracts last month
Wilson was picked up by the
Cincinnati Bengals late in the
fourth round in a surprise
move bv that team. Since

Wilson is already under
contract, the Bengals cannot
negotiate with Wilson until the
terms of his existing contract
have expired However, should
Wilson decide to play out the
remainder of his CFL contract
and jump leagues to the NFL.
the Bengals would hold exclu
sive negotiating rights to the
offensive tackle.
While the drafting of a
player already under contract
in another league is not too
rare it ordinarily occurs later
in the scheduled 17-round
draft, thus the surprise ele
ment when the Bengals selec
ted Wilson in the fourth round.
Several more Bulldogs .are
expected to be chosen in
today's final round of the draft.
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers
opened the draft by selecting
Southern California tailback
Ricky Bell, who finished
second in the Heisman trophy
balloting last season.
Tampa earned the right to
the draft’s first pick by
dropping all 14 regular season
games last year.
An interesting twist to the
selection of Bell is the fact that
he will be reunited with his
former college coach. John
McKay, who left USC to coach
Tampa BAy in its first year in
the league last season
But the selection came as no
surprise to the 6-2. 215 pound
runner who will also join
ex-teammate Anthony Davis,
who played in the CFL last
vear but signed with the Bucs
iast fall.
"I’ve been waiting a year
and a half for this." Bell said.
“I’ve known for over a year
and a half they were going to
draft me. I think it was a
matter of Coach McKay
needing a big fullback with
almost the equal ability of
Tony Dorsett (last year's
Heisman trophy winner).”
Though Bell had the novelty
of being the first draftee,
perhaps most football followers
were watching to see where
Dorsett would go.
The Dallas Cowboys were
the lucky recipients of last
year's hottest item on a
football field, selecting the
former University of Pitts
burgh star second in the draft.
But the Cowboys paid dearly
for the opportunity to pick up
Dorsett. trading three second
round choices and the first
pick in the 14th round to the
Seattle Seahawks for the rights
to the 5-10. 195 pounder from
Aliquippa. Pa.
Dorsett. who led the Pan
thers to the National Collegiate
Athletic Association (NCAA)
championship last season, set
13 NCAA rushing records in his
four year career Dorset! led
the nation in rushing and
scoring last season, carrying
the ball 338 times for 1948
yards and 22 touchdowns. He
averaged 5.8 yards per carry
and 177.1 yards per game.
Dorsett finished his career
as the leading rusher in college
football history with 6082
yards, the first collegian to
surpass the 6000 yard mark.
His 1948 yards total was also a
seasonal record
He broke Glenn Davis’
record for most points in a
career with 356 and tied the
former West Point star’s
career touchdown record of 59.
Last New Year’s Day (many
Georgians will recall) Dorsett
sidestepping and dodged his
way to what seemed like miles
of rushing yards while deves-
tating the Georgia Bulldogs in
the annual Sugar Bown Classic
in the Superdome at New
Orleans.
