has any real significance. ' he

Dr. John H Robinson III.
regent and chairman of the
education committee, said he
knew nothing about the new
school.
Dr. Floyd W. Windal. direc
tor of the School of Accounting,
is enthusiastic about the move
and has cited three basic
advantages of the change.
“We’ll now be able to design a
curriculum that we think will
best create top-quality accoun
tants, ’’ he said
"It will now be easier to
instill a sense of professional
ism in our accountants. We
want to emphasize a great
sense of social and ethical
responsibility to our students,”
Windal explained.
A third advantage is “the
visibility a separate identity
gives us with the University
and the accounting community
across the country," he said.
Windal plans to work with
other business faculty mem
bers on curriculum changes,
which he expects to have
concluded by spring.
"The total hours of account
ing the students will take will
probably not change, but the
mix of non accounting course*,
will be modified,” Windal said.

PAPA JOE'S
Accounting department
is now separate school
By KATHKRYN HAYES
The former Department of
Accounting in the College of
Business Administration has
emerged this quarter as a
separate school, according to
Business Dean William C.
Flewellen.
The School of Accounting
will remain in the College of
' Business Administration with
the same dean; however, the
new school will have its own
administrative and budgetary
• structures and the curriculum
for accounting students will
eventually be redesigned,
Flewellen explained
» The faculty members for the
new school are being taken
from the former accounting
department faculty. Former
,i accounting department head
Dr. Floyd W. Windal is now
director of the School of
Accounting. Flewellen said.
While most of the changes
for the new school are still in
the planning stages, Flewellen
feels the separate identity will
create a greater sense of
professionalism among ac
counting students. "It’s a
major change in attitude,
action and support from the
community,” he said. "It’s a
major change in the attitude of
faculty and students.”
The separate school will
create prestige and public-
support, according to the dean.
"We will be able to attract
better students and faculty,”
‘ he said.
Several other universities
now have separate schools of
accounting, such as the Uni
versity of Florida and the
University of Missouri. Ac
counting professionals support
the trend. Flewellen added
“Many accounting firms and
professional organizations set
aside funds for the support of
accounting schools and the
public exposure and prestige of
a separate School of Accoun
ting will make outside funding
possible for us," Flewellen
said.
The amount of funds availa
ble to accounting through the
University will not be in
creased, he said. Flewellen
hopes to eventually secure
funds from outside sources to
support any additional costs
incurred by improvements
within the new school.
The Board of Regents
approved the proposal to form
the new school on July 14. The
proposal was originally
brought before University
President Fred C. Davison by
the accounting department in
May, 1976.
"It was my understanding
that the change primarily was
one in name," Regent James
D. Maddox said Monday "It
will assist them (the account
ing school) in recruiting first
rate faculty by giving them
more prestige," he said.
"I’ve never been too enthu
siastic about these name
changes," Maddox said. "I
call it a question of semantics.

The University’s printing
department has moved from
the basement of Terrell to a
new building on South Campus
The new 24,200 square foot
facility was built at a cost of
$674,069 and is located across
the railroad tracks that run
parallel to East Campus Road
The printing building, accor
ding to Campus Planning
Director David Lunde, is the
first move in the University’s
long range plans for expansion
across the tracks.
Plans call for the extension
of the road leading to the
printing building and the
construction of academic and
other service buildings in the
area, he said.
In conjunction with the
printing department’s change
of location, a $100,000 Mergen-
thaler VIP computerized type
setting system has been
installed.
The linotype machine re
placed by the new system has
been retained as a backup
system.
One of the advantages of the
new building, according to
Charles Durham, printing de
partment accountant, is added
space.
"Terrell wasn’t organized
properly," he said "It was
designed for classrooms. We
had to tear down a wall to get
the camera in and take the
camera apart to get it back
out.”
Also, he said, the new
building will allow the depart
ment to keep a fully stocked
warehouse The ground floor
storeroom, about 2100 square
feet, will accomodate skids of
paper stacked in threes The
basement of Terrell would only
hold six containers, he said.
A new $12,000 fork lift makes
it possible to take paper from
the storeroom to the second
floor.
An automated air-condition
ing system provides improved
temperature control in the
printing department, Durham
said Several employes had
passed out because of the heat
in the basement of Terrell, he
added.
Durham described the old
Terrell Hall operation as a fire
hazard. With gasoline and
printing chemicals stored in
cramped quarters, the building
"could get wiped out fast" in a
fire, he said
The move from Terrell was
made in steps, with the
composing room and plate
making operations going first.
The presses were not shut
down for the move, but were
taken over to the new building
on a weekend By Aug 29. the
presses were running on South
Campus. Durham said.
Oct 12 has been chosen as
the tentative date for an open
house to show off the new
facility This date. Durham
said, is the anniversary of the
printing department's move
from the art annex to Terrell
in 1961
The 27 employes of the
printing department handle
printing jobs tor the University
System, including the Board of
Regents.
Although there is room for
expansion in the press room,
Durhan said, the printing when it was given new
operation was not expanded headquarters
