; Deep threat I
Murray is rated ‘X’ ^
for excellent potential
By TED LANGFORD
For a moment last Saturday it looked like Georgia had
, reactivated flanker Gene Washington for the Clemson game to
T pull off another one of his patented miracles.
A second look and one realized that it was not.
Meet Jesse Murray, the Bulldogs' new miracle worker.
Murray, a senior from Columbus, is the new split end for Dogs
? this season and has already made his presence known among
Georgia fans and defensive backfields.
Against Clemson last week Murray was responsible for six
receptions and a total of 112 yards which included a SI yard toss
* from tight end Uiysess Norris that set up Georgia’s only score.
“I was glad I could make the catch," Murray said, “even
though we did lose I think we did establish ourselves as a
passing threat "
t Murray has not seen much action since he has been at Georgia
due to injuries. "I have had a lot of tough luck since I have been
at Georgia,” Murray said, "its been just one injury after
another It’s really frustrating."
{. The 6-3, 180 lb Murray has been slowed by leg injuries sir.ee
' he arrived at Georgia. “Jesse has had some rough times, but 1
hope he is over them now," Dooley said.
Even though the Dogs lost to Clemson, Dooley had words of
v praise for Murray. “If I had to single out one individual who had
f a great game it would have to be Murray," Dooley said. “I think
now he is beginning to come into his own.”
With Georgia’s receiving corps gone from last year's SEC
I championship team a lot of pressure would seem to fall on
Min ray's shoulders to keep the passing attack stable. But
Murray dodSn'l feel that way
“We have got some guys on this team that can catch the ball,"
. Murray explained. "Norris and Mark Hodges can both hang on to
l the football. Saturday was my day, but I'm sure they will have
theirs before the season is over.”
Murray along with the rest of the Dogs know the importance of
this week's game with South Carolina. "This is a big game for
1 us," Murray said. "We've had good practices this week and I
think it has payed off. I hope they're ready because I know we
will be."
While Murray will probably have to live in the shadow of Gene
"* Washington for the rest of the season, he will be the first to tell
you that he is not a shoe salesman. He will not be fitting
anybody’s shoes but his own.

Leukemia.
It’s no longer
adeath sentence.
When you were young, no form of
cancer terrified your parents more than
leukemia did.
Just fifteen years ago, a child with
leukemia could expect to live only months.
But, thanks to research, things have
changed.
Children who once lived months are
now living years. Many of them are grow
ing up. Some are already adults, living
normal lives.
Did you ever wonder what the
American Cancer Society did with the
money you gave us? Well, some of it went
to leukemia research. And, if we had more
we could do more. Give to the American
Cancer Society.

JESSE MURRAY REACHES HIGH TO HAUL ONE IN
Bulldog senior posing a new threat to opponents
By PETE FOLEY
Sports editor
Last week at this time,
nearly every paper in state
had at least a small article
about Vince Dooley and his
upcoming victory over Clem
son; the 100th of his head
coaching career.
But the Tigers had other
ideas and the Dogs' 7-6 loss
was tabbed as Dooley’s “win
that got away.”
Now, one week later, there is
considerably less talk about
the 45 year old roach’s career
record of 99-44-5 and its
apparent that Dooley prefers it
that way
"I wish there was some way
I could escape the attention
everybody has given the 100th
win in publications,” he said
last Sunday. “I understand
how the public can attach
significance to such a thing but
it really doesn’t mean any
more to me than any other
win.
“Right now, I think abso
lutely nothing about it. As I’ve
told other people? I'm going to
get that 100th win sooner or
later, whether it takes me two
years and, at the rate we’re
going it may take that long "
Dooley, in his usual manner,
warned aobut the remaining
opponents on Georgia’s sched
ule. but, contrary to the past,
there is a more sincere tone in
his voice when he explains how

high the hill is the Dogs have
to climb.
“We have some rough seas
ahead of us,” he said slowly.
“And as we embark upon
them, we have a ship that is
hardly seaworthy. Our most
important thing is to win the
remaining ball games for the
seniors who won’t ever have
the chance to face Alabama
again or somebody else on the
schedule.
“They are in their last
season and me, well, I’ll be
back again next year.”
Dooley admits having aspi
rations to be an athletic
director one day but says it
won’t happen for at least
several more years.
“I don’t want to give up
coaching anytime soon," he
said. “But then again, after
last Saturday, I’m tempted to
give it up now
‘Seriously, I enjoy what I’m
doing and I intend to stick with
it.” Dooley is currently in his
first year of a new four year
contract presented him last
July.
"My biggest intention right
now is to collect the efforts of
this team as a whole and put
together a decent season I’m
not worried about South
Carolina being my 100th
victory. I'm worried about
South Carolina being our next
opponent ”
