When first entering Helen,
Ga., one is immediately
overwhelmed by the quaint
ness of the place. The feeling
soon fades.
Helen is north Georgia’s
contribution to the genre of a
village remodeled to look like a
town in another time and-or
place.
In this case it is place. The
style is Bavarian Alpine.
The first of two consecutive
weekends of annual Oktober
fest celebrations took place
last weekend. Oktoberfest be
gins again this Friday ahd
concludes at 6 p.m. Sunday.
Many Bavarian type acts
have been imported for the
occasion, and is supposedly
representative of similar cele
brations in Bavaria.
On the surface, it is rather
startling, this thing so out of
place. But it is soon recogniz
able for what it is.
HELEN, GA., was just like
any other town in north Georgia.
Quiet and fairly relaxed. Then
someone hit upon the idea that
turning the place into a tourist
attraction could revitalize the
town’s economy and provide a
good deal of wealth. It
undoubtedly has done just that.
But in so doing, a certain
commercialism has prevailed.
Many of the local shops are
fashioned on representations of
shops one could find in
Bavaria. But more than one of
them has expanded to include
a variety of other items
typicaUy found in tourist spots.
Most’seemed slightly over
priced and many did not lend
themselves to the aesthetic
effect the original idea was
intended to achieve.
THE FOOD seemed quite
good and a wide variety of
different food fair and German
beer is a definite attraction.
Most people seemed to be
eating something or another,
but there appeared to be many
more people buying food than
were purchasing the many
beer mugs available all over
town.
The turnout to Oktoberfest
seemed even less than on
previous visits when no special
activities were taking place In
all fairness, this was very
likely because the town was
visited on a Sunday, when no
beer could be served
Other features of the Okto
berfest included a wide variety
of musicians and bands. One
band carried incongruity to the
extreme and played the Notre
Dame fight song during a
snake dance made up of a
liberal sprinkling of townsfolk
dressed in Bavarian regalia
and some tourists.
The atmosphere of the place
became most burdensome
and boring after a short stay.
There are few if any buildings
that are not modeled on a
Bavarian style.
Helen and Oktoberfest, while
appealing to many people, did
not seem a place that would
entertain many college stu
dents. The 1.5 to 2 hour trip is
a bit much to ask but Unicoi
State Park is nearby and if
you're in the area, drive the
short distance to Helen. There
is nothing else like it in North
Georgia.
