Tough enough!
Junkyarders ‘Bleed slowly’
By PERRY MclNTYRE
COLUMBIA, S.C.—Perhaps it was the insult of being as much
as a 12 point underdog or maybe it was the realization of
Defensive Coach Erk Russell’s philosophy that his defense
should “bleed slowly.”
Whatever the reasons, the Dog defense came together for a
sparkling clutch effort in repulsing the talented South Carolina
Gamecocks Saturday night
Put on the spot by six fumbles lost by the offense, the Dogs
were confronted by 81 plays from the high-powered Gamecock
attack. But in spite of the boisterous home crowd and the
pressure from South Carolina's offense, Georgia allowed an
average of only three yards a play.
“We had a lot of respect for South Carolina and had to play
good team defense since we were using a great deal of
man-to-man coverage," a tired and beaten up Jeff Lewis
reflected.
Rover back Bill Krug echoed that feeling adding that Georgia
went into the game with a lot of respect for the Gamecocks and
quarterback Ron Bass
"After having played against both quarterbacks, we consider
Jack Henderson lof Oregon) and Ron Bass to be the best two
quarterbacks in the country."
Bass started with his passing attack early in the game when
Georgia shut down the Gamteuck's running attack. At the time,
this did not seem too much of a problem for the home team as
Carolina marched to a touchdown that tied the score at 7-7
nearing the end of the first quarter
Bass hit elusive wide receiver Zion McKinney on a 20-yard
pass for the touchdown on a play in which the Dogs defense was
caught blitzing McKinney also caught six more passes in the
game for a total of 81 yards, six more yards than generated by
the entire Bulldog passing attack.
In addition to the stinginess of the defense that kept South
Carolina from mounting a comeback threat was the
game-deciding two points scored when the Dogs forced a safety
on South Carolina with less than a minute to play in the third
quarter
The safety was set up when Georgia's Kevin McLee fumbled
on the South Carolina two-yard line. Backed up in their own end
zone, the Gamecocks were contained to a one-yard gain by the
Dogs’ Dave Boersig who had one of his best games ever for
Georgia.
On the next play, Carolina's iRondass lost his grip on the
hand-off and the entire Georgia front four swarmed in to force
the ball out of the endzone and record the safety that at the
time pulled the trailing Dogs to within a point, 13-12.
Maybe it was the safety that was the spark but trom that
point on, the defense played with the intensity that has been
their trademark for the last two seasons. And from there, a
confident Georgia defense thwarted the Gamecock offense until
the Dog offense could manuever into position for Rex
Robinson’s 22-yard field goal that won the game
Safety Johnny Henderson who had an interception that killed
a late Carolina drive and broke up several dangerous passes in
the second half, summed up the overall effort
"We are finally together on defense and have gotten to
where we are playing like we did last year.”
Indeed, the defense seemed to play as a unit and while there
were good plays by almost everyone no one person could be
singled out.
Maybe there's one very intangible but definitely present
factor behind Saturday's super defensive effort This is still a
unit of the original Junkyard Dogs and that's a crew that will
always be tough enough

Bulldogs ride USC roller-coaster, 15-13

COLUMBIA. S.C.-It was the
best of games. It was the worst
of games.
There were six Georgia
fumbles lost. There were three
South Carolina fumbles recov
ered.
There were two missed
Georgia field goals. There
were two successful Georgia
field goals.
There were only seven of 17
third down situations convert
ed for Georgia There were
three unsuccessful fourth down
conversions for South Carolina.
And through all the sloppy,
shoddy play, the game was
finally decided when Georgia
quarterback Steve Kogers fell
on the snap with :00 remaining
on the cheer leading scoreboard
in William-Brice Stadium
Georgia had escaped the
University of South Carolina
15-13 for its 10th consecutive
win over the Gamecocks
dating back to 1959 and upping
its season slate to 2-1.
It took a 22 yard field goal by
freshman Rex Robinson with
6:33 remaining to provide the
Dogs with the winning differ
ence.
“We were very, very fortu
nate to win," a smiling Vince
Dooley said in the lockerroom
afterwards. “But I’m happy
because we got ourselves back
on the right track.'' Georgia
lost to Gemson 7-6 10 days ago.
“I’m very proud of this team
because they didn't give up,"
Dooley continued “They
showed me that they have a lot
of pride in themselves because
time and time again, they
came back. I’ll take this crew
anywhere to play anybody."
Things looked ridiculously
easy for the Dogs in the
opening minutes of play as
quarterback Jeff Pyburn
moved his offense to mid field
then scooted around right end
for a 52 yard touchdown after
just 3:02 had elapsed Robinson
added the extra point for a 7-0
lead.
On the ensuing possession,
rover Bill Krug pounced on a
Carolina fumble at the Game
cock 45 yardline and suddenly
an extremely vocal crowd of
56,784 sat back and forgot that
Columbia sportswriters had
called Jim Carlen’s squad a 19
point favorite.
Atter three plays and two
yards, Dooley called for a 58
yard field goal attemp that
was short, however.
Later in the first quarter,
Georgia lost the first of six
fumbles at mid field. Game
cock quarterback Ron Bass
mixed his running and passing
effectively as he led the Cocks
to the Georgia 20 then sought
out receiver Zion McKinney
who snatched the pass down
the middle at the eight and
carried the ball into the end
zone. Britt Parrish’s PAT
knotted things at seven-up
In the second quarter, the
game took a different com
plexion as the Bulldogs were
plagued with poor field posi
tion, initiating three out of four
possessions within their own 10
yardline.
Consequently, Carolina re
ceived Mike Garrett's punts no
deeper than its own 48 yardline
but could only capitalize on the
excellent field position once
with 1:10 on the clock when
Parrish booted a 27 yard field
goal
After safety Johnny Hender
son's six yard interception
return. Pyburn led the Dogs 51
yards to the Gamecock 31
yardline where the drive
stalled Robinson trotted on
and calmly kicked a 48 yard
field goal, the longest of his
three game college career,
knotting things once again at
10-10 with :34 on the clock.
Carolina took the second half
kickoff and moved methodical
ly downfield with Bass utilizing
his favorite receiver Philip
Logan. The Bass-Logan hookup
accounted for 40 of 77 yards in
the drive capped by Parrish's
second field goal; this one
from 20 yards out to put the
Gamecocks ahead 13-10 at 7:04
of the third quarter.
After a suddenly revitalized
offense, led by Keven McLee’s
slashing runs, moved to the
Carolina eight, the pigskin
squirted loose and another
opportunity had faded away.
But a determined defense
redeemed the offense by
forcing Bass to fumble the ball
in his own end zone, the
Gamecock QB falling on it for
a Georgia safety, tightening
things at 13-12.
Perhaps the epitome of a
fumble-laden game, the fourth
quarter, saw three turnovers
within three minutes as neither
team seemed to want to
administer a killing blow.
However, Georgia linebacker
Jeff Lewis gathered in a
Carolina fumble at the Game
cock 25 yardline and, after
moving to the five, Robinson
put up the victory field goal.
Though there were probably
a dozen different turning points
in the game that had more ups
and downs than a zipper, most
agree that Georgia’s goal line
stand that forced Carolina to
go for a field goal midway
through the third period was
the single biggest factor in the
Dog victory
“We just kept on coming,”
Henderson said after the
game. “We never felt we were
out of it. We didn’t get down
about the fumbles. Everytime
there was a turnover, the
defense just went out and got
the ball back.’’
BULLDOG NOTES—Run
ning back Kevin McLee
became the second leading
rusher in Georgia history on
his first carry when he went
over tackle for two yards
McLee, tied with Glynn Harri
son at 2026 yards going into the
game, picked up 68 yards on 23
carries and is iust 186 yards
shy of establishing a new
career rushing mark Frank
Smkwich is the current leader
at 2279...The Carolina win was
Dooley’s 100th as a head coach.
Dooley is now 100-44-5. Place-
kicker Cary Long sustained a
cracked jaw when a Gamecock
blocker flattened the 155 lb.
senior on a kickoff...Pyburn,
despite leaving the game with
a minor injury was the leading
rusher with 95 yards on 12
carries. Willie McClendon
rushed for 89 yards on 16
carries.
