Baseball
team in
practice
By CHUCK THOMPSON
The season might not be
right, but Georgia Coach Roy
Umstattd is not going to waste
the 30 days of fall baseball
practice allotted him by the
NCAA
Umstattd, beginning his
third year with the Bulldogs
and his 1978 version of the
baseball Dogs began practice
10 days ago. Approximately 65
men tried out for the squad
The first cut Monday saw 36
players left, at least until the
end of fall practice anyway
No pitchers were cut so
Umstattd could get a better
look at them this week in
practice and next week in
intrasquad games. He must
replace several pitchers who
graduated and also must build
up the staff to guard against
the many injuries that deva
stated the team last year.
Walk-ons found they were
bucking stiff odds when they
reported, for the entire start
ing lineup of last year’s
fielders returns.
A couple of walkons were
impressive enough though, to
cause Umstattd to keep them
around David Sweat and Kim
Fletcher could crack the lineup
u they keep coming on strong,
according to the coach.
Umstattd also feels that
freshman signee Donnie Keen
er and junior Bubba Chrismer
(playing as a sophomore after
being redshirtcd last year) will
be real plus factors for our
team. They’ll really push last
year’s starters to do better If
not, they'U (Keener and
Chrismer) be starting,” added
the coach
Umstattd said that he feels
“this year’s team can only be
stronger than last year’s. We
had the 10th leading team
batting average in the nation
and all of our hitters are
back.’’
But he’s quick to add thal
“everyone else will be better
too."
