Georgia vs. Ole Miss;
a vengeful showdown
By LAHIIY LOCKE
Revenge seems to be the
word that everybody is shout
ing in preparation for the
Georgia -Ole Miss clash to
morrow afternoon in Sanford
Stadium.
For two straight years. Ole
Miss has spoiled things for the
Bulldogs In 1975, the Rebels
put the stopper on Georgia’s
bid for a Southeastern Cqq
ferenco CSEC) title. 28-14. Then
last year, the men from Oxford
took away Georgia's chance
for a perfect regular season
with a 21-17 upset
But tomorrow things will be
different, right 0
Possibly. The last two games
have been played in Oxford
and tomorrow everybody will
be Between the Hedges before
the homefolks
But before anybody starts to
put I (Hies on Ole Miss' grave,
they tetter stop and consider
that Ole Miss is pretty good
Although the Rebels enter
the earn** with a 2-3 record, I
they have a history of spoiling
things for favorites by pulling
one of the oldest tricks in the
book -not making dumb mis
takes and playing a full 60
minutes
Already this year, the Rebels
have taken away Notre
Dame’s claim to the top
national ranking with a 20 13
upset of the Fighting Irish in ;
Oxford
Last week against Auburn.
Ole Miss, at times, was very
impressive and if not for a few
errors, might have won that
game
The series record between
Georgia and ole Miss is
indicative of the kind of rivalry
these two teams are building
Since 1940, both teams have
taken seven games from each
other with one tie
The even nature of the series

carries over to the two stands
this year Both Georgia and
Ole Miss are inexpei ienced at
key positions on the offensive
line, and both teams have been
plagued by mistakes at impor
tant times in their games
Mississippi's two wins this
season have come over previ
ously mentioned Notre I)nme
and a 7-3 sneaker over
Memphis State.
Its losses have been to
Alabama, 34 13, Southern Mis
sissippi. 27-19 and Auburn
21-15.
The Rebels have a capable
quarterback in left handed
Bobby Garner. He will be
hacked up by senior Tim Ellis.
Ole Miss’ defensive line is
definitely one of their strong
points. It featues Charlie Cage
and Lawrence Johnson at
defensive tackles and George
Plasketes at defensive end.
Mississippi will run a versa
tile veer offense that can be
shifted into the power I. The
backfield will be anchored by
fullback James Storey, a
strong inside runner, and
flankers Les Kimbrough and
James Wethers will offer a
passing threat to Georgia’s
secondary.
If the Dogs are to beat Ole
Miss, they must control the
football without coughing up
the costly fumbles that have
done them in this season.
“They have the best two
quarterbacks in the SEC in
Bobby Gardner and Tim
Ellis.’’ Georgia Coach Vince
Dooley said it’s going to take
j a great effort on our part to
! beat them.”
The Dogs need to win this
game if they are going to have
any hope of getting back into
the SEC race. Already 0-1 in
the conference, the second loss
would probably eliminate
Georgia for the season
Ole Miss also sees this as an
important game if they are to
have a shot at a bowl. Another
loss would give them four and
that could be too many this
early in the season to hold any
hopes of a bowl bid.
But most important of all,
the Georgia-Ole Miss game
Saturday offers both teams a
chance to put a little into a
season that is quickly going
sour for both squads
A sellout crowd of 59,000 plus
is expected to view the game.
Kickoff time is 1:30 p m.
Reb QB’s double trouble
Bv PAT BISHOP
Georgia will meet Ole Miss this Saturday in what will prove to
be an important -it not the most importanl game of Ihe season
for each team Both teams are trying to get back into the
Southeastern Conference (SECi picture Ole Miss with an 0 2
conference record while Georgia is 0 1
Georgia’s injury ridden defense, coupled with an experienced
Ole Miss offense gives the Rebels a chance to heat the Dogs for
the third year in a row But one should never overlook Ihe Dogs
when they play Between the Hedges
According to Ole Miss quarterback Tim Ellis. "It's always
totfgh when you play Georgia Between Ihe Hedges They can beat
anyone in the country when they play in Athens ”
But Ellis also showed everyone that Ole Miss could heat
anyone in the country when he and the Rebels upset powerful
Notre Dame earlier this year
Although Ellis is not the No I quarterback this year, he led Ole
Miss to victories over Georgia the last two years Last year. Ellis
turned the ball game around and won it for the Repels, 21-17
Georgia thought they had it wrapped up in the first quater when
they led 14-3 But a Georgia fumble was turned into a scoring
drive by Ellis, who ran five yards for the Rebels' first TD of Ihe
game. He then threw the hall for the two point conversion Cater
in Ihe same hall Ellis threw a 3S yard touchdown pass to put the
Rebels ahead 18-14 Each team scored a field goal but it ended in
an Ole Miss victory
Although Ellis will not start this game, he is expected to see
plenty of action His game experience against the Dogs should
also lie a plus for him
We beat Georgia two years in a row, and I think they know
we re a good football team," Ellis said
Ellis also said that Georgia overlooked the Rebs last year
Georgia had shut out Alabama the week before and were not
expecting the Rebels to give them much trouble
Several of Georgia's key defensive starters are out with
injuries, while the Ole Miss team is physically sound
"This is Ihe first time all year that evervone has been well "
Ellis said "Last week against Auburn we beat ourselves-we
just made too many mistakes It's gonna he extra hard this
week, bui we're ready to play.’’
Ole Miss will be bringing two ol the best quarterbacks in Ihe
SEC to Athens Saturday Garner, who runs the option
exceptionally well, and Ellis, the better passer, who incidentally
led the SEC in passing accuracy his sophomore year So whether
it's Ellis or Garner, one can be sure that Ole Miss will be
offensively sound
