The Red and Black. Monday. October 31, 1977
Time to face reality
When Georgia Head
Coach Vince Dooley called
his 1977 Bulldog editiop **an
average team” and talked
about “cycles.” Georgia
fans guffawed around the
world.
"01 Vince is up to his ole
Bear' tricks, again.” they
laughed “But we know
different. Sure, the Dogs
are 5 3, but look who
they’ve lost to Bama. shoot
they’re No. 2, Kentucky,
they’re No. 7 and Clemson.
they’re 18th And hell,
they're all seven and one ”
Agreed' The Dogs’ losses
have been to top 20 teams,
but how about those im
pressive wins over such
powerhouses as Oregon,
South Carolina, Ole Miss,
Vanderbilt and most recent
ly Richmond.
Let's refresh our memor
ies. heh?
In the Dogs' opener, the
Georgia team looked slug
gish against a mighty
Oregon Duck team. 27-16.
"Oregon will probably be
the surprise team of the
Pacific 8 conference.” one
newspaper account said
Wrong!
Oregon has been a dismal
failure this year, becoming
the West's most disappoint
ing team Most recently, the
mighty Ducks have lost to
a Washington State team
that has sputtered all year
long in a real close battle.
56-20
After losing to Clemson in
a mudbath. 7-6, the Dogs
took on South Carolina The
Gamecocks were 3-0 and
primed to avenge a 1976
defeat Carolina had broken
the top 20 and was favored
to whup up on the Bulldogs
Georgia won the game.
15-13. in a contest that
featured many turnovers by
both teams.
More recently. the
Gamecocks have lost to
mighty Ole Miss, North
Carolina and North Carolina
State in successive weeks.

quickly becoming the
South’s most disappointing
team Saturday. South Caro
lina's preseason All-Ameri
can candidate Ron Bass
threw three interceptions on
the way to a boring 7-3 loss
to N.C. State.
Against Ole Miss, the
Dogs had a 14-0 lead at
halftime and appeared to be
coasting to an easy victory.
But the Rebels surprised
Georgia friend and foe alike
by scoring two touchdowns
in the second half and just
falling short on a two point
conversion.
Mississippi is now a
disappointing 4-5 with wins
over Notre Dame. South
Carolina and Vanderbilt.
Saturday they almost
looked impressive against
LSU. After having the
Tigers down 21-7 at the half,
i in- Rebels let LSU off the
hook by allowing two
touchdowns in the fourth
quarter as the Tigers won
28-21
Then there was Vander
bilt The Commodores had
the Dogs on the ropes for
half the game before the
Dogs managed to roar back,
via Vandy turnovers.
Vanderbilt had this Satur
day off and thanked the big
schedule maker in the sky
for the rest The Commo
dores. known for their lack
of excitement, have man
aged to keep almost every
game close and unfortunate
ly for Head Coach Fred
Pancoast have lost six of the
seven Pancoast's head is
on the chopping block.
After the Dogs’ loss to
Kentucky which wasn’t as
bad as the score < 33-0 >, they
met an outstanding Rich
mond team and whipped the
Spiders 23-7 in the score In
the statistics, however, the
news wasn’t that good.
Richmond managed to out
do the Dogs on the ground
and in the air.
The Spiders had rolled
into Athens with a 2-5
record, averaging only 214
yards total offense per
game. Against the Dogs,
that average was boosted as
the Spiders outrushed the
Dogs 222-218 and outpassed
them 79-70 That adds up to
301 yards against Georgia’s
famed Junkyard defense,
definitely Richmond's finest
day all year
In the next four weeks,
Georgia comes up against
three good teams. Auburn,
Florida and Georgia Tech.
The Dogs could be 8-3 or
5-6, anything’s possible All
three teams have good
records. Auburn is undefea
ted in the Southeastern
Conference. Florida is 3-2-1
and Tech is 5-3
Georgia could go to a
bowl but not necessarily
because of their record but
because of their fan sup
port The Dogs, as the bowl
committees well know, al
ways take a large contin
gent of fans to any bowl
By now Dog fans are
screaming. "Blasphemy,
hang that boy by his toes
and quarter him.”
Whoa, fellas!
Never did I say that I
didn’t like the Dogs, I’m
simply being realistic. Their
wins have been over less-
than-average teams and
their losses to better-than-
average ones, so the Dogs
fall somewhere ir. between
They aren't hell, folks.
The Dogs are an average
football team.

occurred in the first quarter
and staked the Dogs to a 7-0
lead. Henderson, along with
the rest of the defensive team
played another exceptional
game. The defense in fact set
up a number of scoring
opportunities for the Dog
offense. The game was decided
by Richmond's weak punting
and field goal units Twice
Spider punter Bruce Allen was
pressured and forced to run for
first downs, failing Loth times.
The field goal unit's blocking
was just as bad. as Henderson
slipped through the Spider line
to block Adams' first quarter
attempt One of the biggest
individual stars for the Dogs
was Rex Robinson, who
contributed 11 points to the
Dogs’ effort. Robinson kicked
three field goals and Iwo extra
points.

Women win 4 at tourney

Georgia's women volleyball
team traveled to the Jackson
vilie University Invitational
tournament this weekend and
competed in two pools of seven
teams.
The women played very well,
winning three out of four of
their double matches on
Friday and splitting their two
matches on Saturday
Second year coach Sue
McDonald feels like her team
"was shafted" by the commit
tee selecting the finalists. The
committee chose the Universi
ty of Miami instead of her
team.
This year's team currently
stands at 11-12 and coach
McDonald isn’t overly pleased
with its performance •
"Actually I'm a little disap
pointed because of all the
talent and experience we have
I thought we’d be doing better ”
The main problem that has
hampered her team, she says,
is a lack of consistency
"Sometimes we play great
on defense and then we play
bad on offense, and vice versa
We just haven’t been able to
put it together ”
In the Jacksonville tourna
ment this weekend, the women
started off like gangbusters,
winning their first two
matches
On the first day of action,
the women defeated Lake City
Community College 15-7 and
15-13. Also on Friday the
women knocked off Miami
Dale Community College 15-8
and 16-14
In the last match of the first
day. the women lost their first
match of the tournament They
lost to Florida International
University 15-12 and 15-8. Then
in the final match of the day,
the women bounced back and
deteated the University of
North Carolina at Charlotte
15 7 and 15-6
The women split their two
matches on Saturday. First
they beat Flagler College 15-8
and 17-15 and then fell victim
to Florida Tech 15-1 and 15-1.
Although coach McDonald
was disappointed that the
committee didn’t see fit to
choose her team for the finals,
she still thinks her team will
come around.
"Hopefully we can get all the
things to come together out
there We've sure had our ups
and downs this year "
Next weekend the women
journey to West Georgia
College for another tourna
ment
In SBC
(UPI)—Alabama appears to
be on a treadmill behind
top-ranked Texas in its bid for
the national championship, but
the second-ranked Crimson
Tub* is making excellent
progress toward its sixth
Southeastern Conference title
in seven years.
The Tide’s convincing, 37-7
win over apparently overrated
Mississippi State won’t help
improve its position in the
rankings because Texas
knocked off I3th-ranked Texas
Tech, 26-0 But it enhanced
Alabama’s role as the SEC
favorite with only Louisiana
State and Auburn standing in
the path of a perfect league
record.
Did we say "only?” LSU,
featuring one of the nation’s
finest runners in the person of
215 lb junior tailback Charles
Alexander, will host Alabama
next Saturday night in Baton
Rouge and the Bengals are
now 5-2 after overcoming a 21-0
first-half deficit to beat Ole
Miss. 28-21.
ATLANTA (UPI>-The
Minnesota Vikings, plagued
throughout the game by-
interceptions and fumbles,
used two big plays Sunday, on
a 54-yard pass by Fran
Tarkenton and the other a
51-yard run by Chuck Fore
man, to beat the Atlanta
Falcons 14-7.
Tarkenton's pass was a
touchdown strike to Sammy
White which enabled the
Vikings to tie the score with
9:50 left in the second period,
just 21 seconds after the
Falcons had scored on a
similar bomb, a 49-yard pass
from Scott Hunter to Greg
McCrary.
The Falcons missed two field
goal attempts-one from 37
yards out and the other from
44- and the Vikings missed one
of 27 yards before Foreman
burst up the middle to race 51
yards down to the Atlanta one
with a little more than nine
minutes left to play.
Two running attempts netted
the Vikings nothing and an
apparent one-yard touchdown
pass from Tarkenton to Stn
Voight was nullified by a
motion penalty but Tarkenton
came back on the next play to
throw a six-yard touchdown
pass to Bob Tucker with 8:14
left in the game.
Steve Bartkowski. slated to
be the Falcons’ No. 1
quarterback before injuring his
knee in preseason, made his
first regular season appear
ance with 3:20 left to play and
quickly drove Atlanta from its
own 38 to the Minnesota 36 But
Bobby Bryant then intercepted
one ot his passes, returning it
40 yards, and the Vikings
moved to the Atlanta three on
a 25-yard pass from Tarkenton
to White
The Vikings were content to
run out the clock rather than
attempting to score again
Tarkenton. believed to be
making his last playing
appearance in the state where
he also played high school and
college football, completed 16
of 26 passes for 237 yards and
two touchdowns but was
intercepted three times.
Minnesota, the NFC Central
Division leader, is now 5-2.
Altanta. which was tied with
Los Angeles for the NFC West
lead, dropped to 4-3. The 14
points scored by the Vikings
were the most given up by the
Falcons, who have allowed a
total of only 46 points this
season.
The two Tarkenton touch
down passes made up a total of
only five touchdowns that have
been scored against the
Falcons, none by rushing
