Georgia basketball coach John Guthrie had high
hopes for his team when they rolled into Atlanta
Friday night to open their season against Tech.
But the Dogs played an uninspired frist half and
the Jackets built up a lead that the Dogs couldn’t
overcome. The sad final score was 75-58.

ATLANTA-Minutes before
the Georgia and Georgia Tech
basketball teams took the floor
Friday night at Tech, the
Jackets pep band played the
theme from the TV show,
"Star Trek.’*
The song proved prophetic.
For with five minutes gone
in the contest, Tech had sent
Georgia's basketball hopes
light years away and to a
different galaxy. The final
score was 75-58, Tech
The Dogs started the game
like they knew what they were
doing, taking a quick 3-0 lead.
Georgia’s Lucius Foster, who
was making his debut after a
year layoff with a fractured
elbow, was responsible for all
three of those points But the
injury jinx found Foster later
in the game, as he was forced
to leave it with a bad leg and
back.
Tech came roaring back
behind the outside shooting of
center Bill Allgood Allgood hit
a jumper from the top of the
key to give Tech an 8-6 lead
which they never relinquished.
Allgood, a 6-8, 228 lb senior
was lightly regarded as a
shooter by the Georgia coach
ing staff.
That turned out to be a
costly miscalculation for the
Dogs.
Allgood was devastating all
night long from the outside,
hitting six of six shots, all of
them from the vicinity of the
hot dog line at the Varsity
down the street.
After the game, Georgia
Coach John Guthrie said the
coaching staff should take full
blame for Allgood Guthrie
said that going into the game,
the Dogs planned on giving
Allgood the outside shot.
Then once he started hitting it,
the Dogs still couldn’t stop
him, the coach said
"We were fooled by All
good's ability to shoot from the
outside," Guthrie said.
Ironically, Guthrie said Tech
didn't respect his team’s
outside shooting—and that
helped give Tech the win
because they could concentrate
on the rebounding since the
Dogs couldn’t hit.
Tech Coach Dwane Morrison
said a big factor of the Tech
victory was that the Jackets
got off to a good start and
never let up
‘‘We just got the lead and got
some easy shots we normally
wouldn't have gotten, and put
them in the hole
In the end, Tech just had too
much all around talent for the
Dogs The Jackets dominated
the boards and got their
offensive punch from last
year’s leading scorer Tico
Brown (18 points) and new
comer Sammy Drummer (20
points).
Drummer, last year's Junior
College Player of the Year,
lived up to the Tech crowd’s
expectations in his first ap
pearance Although he looked
uncomfortable at times with
the Tech offense, once he got
the ball, he knew what to do
with it.
Falcons beat Bucs
For Georgia, the team
looked confused on offense and
defense from the opening tip.
Starting the game with a three
guard offense (Walter Daniels.
Mark Slonaker and Jimmy
Daughtry) and with Lavou
Mercer at center and Foster at
forward, the Dogs looked like
they were moving in slow
motion. On defense, they
started with a triangle and two
which never could stop Tech.
One example of how sloppy
the Dogs played came with
15:23 left in the first half On
three straight trips down the
floor, here’s what the Dogs
did: Mercer was called for an
offensive foul. Slonaker threw
an errant pass out of bounds,
and finally Foster followed
Slonaker’s example. During
this time, the Jackets were
scoring six points
At the start of the second
half, the Dogs made a
semi-comeback, pulling within
nine points. That comback
stopped as Tech went on an
eight minute scoring spree
When the dust had cleared, the
Jackets had outscored the

Haskel Stanback powered

goal Sunday as Atlanta kept
alive its slim playoff hopes
with a 17-0 victory over
winless Tampa Bay
Atlanta the stingiest de
fensive team in the NFL,
kept Tampa pinned up
inside its own territory most
of the game, intercepted
four passes and recovered
one Buc fumble.
Three times Tampa had
to start on its own 10 and
once on the one-foot line
when a John James punt
rolled dead
Both of Stanback's scores
were set up by short kicks
by Tampa's Dave Green.
Stanback scored his first
touchdown in the opening
period after Atlanta took
over the ball on the Buc 41.
Tampa's Jeris White was
called for pass interference
in the end zone when he

Stanback. who had 75
yards on 21 carries, scored
again in the third period
after a Green kick was

Seven plays later he scored.
Steinfort, who was picked
up by the Falcons four
games ago, kicked both
extra points.
The victory gives Atlanta
a 6-5 record while Tampa
slipped to 0-11 for the year
