Save a dog,
have it tatooed
Ry LOKKIE Mil.I S
Dogs are not noted for their seaworthy legs or burly
muscles, bulging with tatoos of vivid colors and images of
Mom. nude women, and seething snakes.
But the Athens-Clarke County Humane Society is holding
a Tatoo Clinic for dogs this Satuiday to tatoo canines from
tiny toy fox terriors to great danes
These tatoos are not they type that usually come to mind,
but are actually the owner's social security number tatooed
(in most cases) on the inside of the dog's right leg
The tatooing of dogs in Athens has been done in these
clinics for the last two years to deter dog-napping and to
permanently identify lost dogs
The tatoo clincs were begun by Louise Morrison and her
husband, foimer members of the Athens Kennel Club and
are now sponsored by the Athens-Clarke Countv Humane
Society
•TIIK Docs were at first tatooed on the inside of the left
leg with the AKC (American Kennel Club) number,"
according to Morrison, now an employee of the Humane
Society
"But they are now being tatooed on the inside of the right
leg with the owner's social security number,' she said, and
then are listed with the National Dog Kegistry. an
organization which is attempting to standardize the tatoo
procedure ."
Tatooing does not ruin a dog's appearance and after tn«.
hair grows back, the number is rarely ever seen unless one
knows where to look. Also, laboratories will not use dogs in
experiments who have been tatooed.
The tiighest turnout for a dog tatoo clinic was 80 dogs at
one clinic last year
The dog tatoo clinic to be held this Sat will be in the
Recreation Hall at Memorial Bark, from 9 a m. to 5 p m
Dogs must be at least six months old to be tatooed
The cost is $5 for each dog, with a reduced rate of *2 for
each additional, dog.

An ad for some of Georgia's
non-public ‘Golden Isles"
might well read, "Where the
jungle meets the seashore "
In fact, one of the 13
interesting major islands loca
ted off the southern coast of
Georgia. St. Catherine’s Is
land, is a breeding ground for
African endangered species
The Hare and Endangered
Species Program operated by
the Edward John Noble
Foundation, owner of the
island, along with the New
York Zoological Society, will
be operated until appropriate
controls are instituted in
Africa to protect the animals,"
according to Harvey Young.
Senior Coastal Planner with
the Georgia Department of
Natural Resources
The pristeen island environ
ment supports a number of
species of birds, five species of
antelope. South American
marsh deer, kangaroos and
several varieties of cranes,
according to Peter O’Rourke, a
planner with the Department
of Natural Resources' Office of
Planning and Research
“In the future though, they
plan to have more tha^ just the
exotic foreign specV^* They
would like to include some of the
species which were formerly
indigenous to the area/’
O'Rourke explained
As in the case of St.
Catherine's Island, six other
coastal islands are privately
owned Ossabaw Island, how
ever, which is now privately
owned, is scheduled to be
turned over to Georgia in May.
according to Howard Elack-
man. a spokesman for the
governor’s office
For Georgia, this aspect of
private ownership has meant
the Golden Isles are the last
major undeveloped portion of
the Atlantic Coast. O’Rourke
continued
"The lack of proximity of the
islands to the mainland has
pretty much kept them a
secret." O’Rourke said He
also added that he feels most
tourists have thought Georgia
was just a state you went
through on your way to
Florida.
"All these things, in addition
to the will of the people who
owned the islands, have
contributed to the preservation
of the Georgia islands." he
explained
Since Georgia's Golden isles
are the last major undeveloped
portion of the Atlantic Coast,
O'Rourke believes it is the
state's obligation to see that
the resources are used wisely
The Resources Department
official is currently in the
process of creating a manage
ment policy statement which
will recommend steps to help
ensure the preservation of the
islands lor which the state has
control
The statement. which
O'Rourke hopes to publish soon
"will be informative and
directed at the layman, helping
him to understand why the
resources are of value The
report will also relate the
history of the islands, what's
happening on each of the
islands, who owns them, and
existing management pro
grams.
"It will make statements on
island d< velopment in the rest
of the country, explaining how
the Georgia coastline fits into
the pattern in terms of
preservation and protection."
O'Rourke said
"We feel that the more
people know , the better we can
encourage the best use of the
islands." O'Rourke said
O'Rourke said he will pay
close attention to the happen
ings of Cumberland island,
which has been declared
national seashore The Nation
al Park Service anticipates
that 1500-plus persons will visit
the private island daily,
according to O'Rourke
"The feeling is that the park
service may have set its sights
too high." O'Rourke said. "If
the island is turned into a high
intensity thing, it will really
diminish the quality of the
resource "
"Right now the park service
is making some proposals
Some things alluded to in the
proposals leave doubt in
some people's minds as to
whether the island will remain
protected." he said
O'Rourke, who has master’s
degrees in ecology and region
al planning, is not the only
scientist at work on the
coastline
The University maintains a
maritime institute on the
Southern half of state-owned
Sapelo Island Research on salt
water ecology conducted on
Sapelo Island has contributed
much to ecological principles
of salt water ecology in the last
25-30 years, according to
O'Rourke
Little St Simon's Island, a
privately owned island which
was originally purchased for
its cedar trees, is another
unspoiled island According to
O'Rourke, the owner became
so enthralled with the island
after purchasing it that he
used it as a retreat rather than
destroy its cedar trees To
keep the island economically
viable, the land is now used for
cattle raising, he said
Environmental considera
tions played a role in the
development of Little Cumber
land Island "Presently there
are 30 or so houses on the
island carefully designed to
accomodate the environment,"
O’Rourke said
The island is scheduled to
remain a low density area
In addition, federally owned
Hlackbeard island, is now a
wildlife refuge St Simon's
Island and Sea Island are both
resort communities
Other coastal islands include
privately owned Tybee. St
Simon's. Little St Simon's and
Little Cumberland islands,
federally owned Wasau and
Wolf islands, state owned
Jekvll Island and state and
privately owned Skidaway

ATS may delete routes

The Athens Transit System
(ATS» is considering deleting
certain routes which don’t
have substantial ridership,
reported Barry Irwin, minister
to transportation, at a meeting
of the Student Government
Association (SGA> Executive
Council.
Jake Gabig. spokesman for
ATS. said there are several
reasons for the changes in the
route system
"The most important one is
that we feel we have a lot of
service not provided in the
right areas We have a lot of
empty buses running around
and there are some places that
need more service." he said
"We also have a budget to
live with.” he added
ATS is conducting a route-
schedule analysis from Jan 17
to Jan 19. Specific routes are
being evaluated for ridership
and a passenger tally is kept
on both inhound and outbound
routes
Specific changes in the bus
routes have not been deter
mined yet. but Gabig ex
pressed the desire to coordi
nate ATS schedules with the
University bus schedules
When route changes are
affected, new bus schedules
will be made available to
University students. Gabig
