A strange year
At the risk of sounding like a
broken record. I think some
things need to be said about
the surprising Georgia basket
ball team this year.
Most fans didn't think this
year would be too much
different from last year.
Maybe, said some, with the
return of Lucius Foster, the
Dogs would win more than the
[nine games they did last year
But the feeling was that one
man couldn’t make that much
difference.
Foster surely has helped, but
the success (they've already
won eight games this year)
they have experienced goes far
deeper The players really
believe in themselves and in
big games, it shows. Just look
who they’ve knocked off: The
first upset was against Ohio
State in the first round of the
Louisville Classic. The second
upset was against Louisville
the following night
That Louisville classic brings
up an interesting point And
that is Lavon Mercer and
Walter Daniels played the best
games of the season and
maybe of their college career
m that tournament
As a Georgia fan in the
midst of 16,000 fans in
Louisville’s Freedom Hall. I
could feel the crowd’s reaction
to the Georgia team when they
were announced before the
game. The crowd thought
Georgia was a pushover and
were there just to see an up
and coming Ohio State team
But by the end of the game
those 16.000 had seen Lavon
Mercer put on a show that they
wouldn't soon forget. Twenty-
nine points. 15 rebounds and
seven blocked shots by one
player just doesn’t happen
every day.
The next night Daniels put
on his show He scored 25
points and his leadership in
front of the hostile Louisville
crowd was amazing. During
> that game I was sitting next ti
the LaSalle coaches (their
team had played in the
consolation game before the
* Ga Louisville game 1 Those
coaches were raving at the
play of Daniels. When he didn’t
get the most valuable player
1 award in the tourne>. they
were shocked.
Although most Georgia fans
weren't able to see that game,
they have been treated to three
unbelievably exciting games
here on the home court The
Florida. Georgia Tech and
, Alabama games offered bas
ketball fan&all Ibex could want
in a game and the fact that the
Dogs won all those games
didn't hurt matters any
But the big question mark
surrounding this team is why
they don’t play up to par
against the so-called ‘minor
1 teams." Losses to Auburn,
Mississippi and Mississippi
State have left many observers
wondering exactly what’s go
ing on.
I have my own explanations
of matter. Sure, in some
\\\ ftose games, the Dogs didn’t
play like the team that beat
IiOuisville But for the most
port 1 think the other teams
simply played beyond their
capabilities. In two of those
losses (Auburn and Mississippi
State) the opponents had
players from the state of
Georgia and they were particu
larly "up" for their home state
institution.
Mike Mitchell and Myles
Patrick of Auburn and Rickey
Brown of Mississippi State
were the men who destroyed
the Dogs in those two games.
And then there is another
thing to consider. I’ve always
felt in the past that the
Georgia basketball players
have been inconsistent because
they don’t realize how talentec
they are But now that’s in the
past The problem with the
inconsistency this year is the
opposite side of that coin.
1 believe that after Georgia
beats someone like Louisvilli
or Florida, they begin to thinl
they don’t have to play wel
against the lesser regardei
schools to win When tha
happens, the Auburns, etc.
jump off to big lead an*
Georgia is left walking aroun
in a daze.
No one can say the tear
isn’t playing together thi
year When they’re on they'r
on and when they’re nc
they’re not.
Some might have suggeste
the inconsistency stems froi
the fact there is som
dissention on the team. Not so,
i say
But it's been an exciting and
unpredictable season which
has been a complete surprise.
So far it seems like whenever
the Dogs play, anything can
happen Kentucky will be in

Tel-Aviv
Tel-Aviv, Israel is an unlikely
place to meet the person I am
about to introduce. Three and
a half years ago 1 ended a
search for truth and meaning
in life. The quest for truth had
led me through religion, drugs,
exploitive relationships, philo
sophical books and films, until
I discovered that truth was not
a statement but an Individual.
The search for meaning in life
ended when I realized that 1 was never intended to find meaning in life
apart from this individual whose title is ‘‘Truth”. We call him
“Yeshua” back home but he is better know here as Jesus...
Since receiving Him as Savior and making Him Lord (controller)
of my life 1 have come into a dynamic relationship with God (whom I
now know as Father) that was always, I found out, intended to be. In
meeting Truth I was set free from bondage to sin and equally as
important, self. I am no longer a part of a frustrated life style which
earlier didn’t enjoy God but couldn’t enjoy the world either. For the
past eight months I’ve been a part of Maranatha Student Fellowship
where I’m able to grow along side other Believers who are totally sold
out to Him. The cost of this relationship was not cheap: as a matter of
fact, it cost me everything. But you too can know the Truth and the
Truth will set you free!
