Men gymnasts win meet
By BILLY FLORENCE
The men's gymnastics team
made an impressive debut in
their first home meet of the
year Saturday night, easily
defeating North Carolina State.
Eastern Kentucky, and the
Citadel at the Coliseum
Georgia dominated the meet,
receiving 183 55 points, while
second-place Eastern Ken
tucky could only manage to
score 162.30. N.C. State and the
Citadel lagged far behind with
101.15 and 95.95 points, respec
tively
Coach Lee Cunningham was
extremely pleased with the
way the Georgia gymnasts
held up during the long night of
competition "The meet was a
little bit longer than usual
because of some scheduling
problems.” said Cunningham
“This causes some team
members to get tired early on,
but overall our guys showed
good stamina."
The Georgia team, which is
still undefeated on the season,
is steadily improving with each
meet and this is reflected in
their team scores. “At Jack
sonville Stale, we came up to
174 from 165 points Tonight we
were shooting for 180 and I'm
more than happy with the 183

Cunninham added
Cunningham singled out
Mike Stabler, who captured the
all around title with 44.35
points, and Steve Holt, who
came in third with 42.40. for
their outstanding perfor
mances. Paul Odze, finishing
fourth over all, also received
praise from Cunningham
It was this kind of team
consistency, depth. and
strength that helped Georgia
run away with the meet.
Georgia destroyed their oppon
ents, taking both first and
second place in each of the six
events, thanks to some of their
classy, young talent.
Pepe Peruyero, Georgia's
flashy freshman, easily won
the floor exercise with an 8 80,
despite being handicapped by a
sore left knee. Holt, who came
in second with a 8.50, also had
a strong routine.
Two other freshmen scored
impressive victories on the
pommel horse Robert Vetter
finished first with 7.7 points
while Bill Slater was second
with a 7.0.
On the rings. Stabler showed
good control in winning with a
score of 7.80. Jim Beggs was a
strong second receiving 7.65
points This gave Georgia an 11
point lead over Eastern
Kentucky at the end of the first
three events.
The gymnastics team takes
on William and Mary this
Friday night at 8 in the
Coliseum. "This will be the
toughest team we have to face
this year besides LSU,”
Cunningham said. "We’re go
ing to need 190 points in order
to win.”

The Georgia swimmers left

this weekend u'ith mixed

LSU soundly defeated the Dogs
72-46 in a meet that was
supposed to be pretty even,
before the meet the swimmers
had high hopes of sinking the
Tigers, but in the end it was
the Dogs that were gasping for
air
"We should have won.” one
swimmer said. "They weren’t
any better than us, and I know
we could have beaten them."
Coach Scholle echoed that
sentiment
"We just swam poorly. It
should have been an even
meet, but we were bad that
day. We just couldn't put it
together." he said.
The Bulldogs could snatch
only two victories against the
Bayou Bengals Rob Ramirez
won the 100-yard freestyle, and
Rickey Brackett took the
200-yard backstroke.

Walter Daniels' game high of
32 points, including six clutch
free throws in the last 1:30.
enabled Georgia to edge
Tennessee 75-74 in Knoxville,
Tenn. Saturday night.
Daniels converted three one-
and-one opportunities, stifling
Tennessee's attempt to erase a
five point Bulldog lead with
less than a minute to play. The
leading Bulldog scorer this
season sank his last two free
throws with :09 left, giving
Georgia a 75-72 lead. Kevin
Nash tipped in a missed
Volunteer jump shot at the
buzzer for the final margin.
Curtis Jackson added 20
points for the winners. 18 in the
second halt La von Mercer was
the third Bulldog in double
figures with 14 points.
Reggie Johnson led the Vote
with 19 points, before fouling
out with 6:00 to play. James
Ratiff had 16 point! and Bert
Bertelkamp added 14.
The win was the first one on
the SEC road this season for
Georgia, upping their confer
ence mark to 3-4. and the
overall record to 9-7 The
victory broke a long losing
streak of 19 games for the
Bulldogs in Knoxville, dating
back to the 1930-31 season.
Georgia led at halftime 30-28.
The Dogs were hot from the
field in the first half, connect
ing on 61.9 percent of their
shots Tennessee was just the
opposite, hitting on only 11 of
40 attempts for 27.5 percent.
Both clubs enjoyed six point
leads in the first stanza, but
neither were able to pull away.
With the score knotted at 6-6,
Vol point guard Johnny Durden
hit three straight long jumpers
to make it 12-6 Tennessee, and
Georgia Coach John Guthrie
quickly culled for a time-out
with 14:55 left. The Dogs
quickly caught up and grabbed
a 23-17 lead as Daniels began
to find the range and Mercer
blocked a couple of shots.
Tennessee then took a time-out
to slow the Georgia momentum
and tied it 26-26 with 4:30 left
on the strength of two three
point plays.
The defending SEC champs
are now 2-5 in the conference
and 7-9 overall. Even though it
is an off year by Tennessee
standards. 12.700 showed up for
the game on a blistery. snowy
night.
