Bulldogs to meet Vols Saturday Pfi! 1'jj
Hy 8TF.\ K BURGESS
With five games remaining
on the schedule. Georgia Coach
John Guthrie is preparing his
club for Saturday night s clash
with Tennessee Coming off of
a two game losing skein on the
road, the rematch with the
Volunteers will probably deter
mine whether «>r not the Dogs
finish with a winning record
The Bulldogs are 10-12
overall. 4-9 in the conference.
Georgia edged the Vols 75-74
in Knoxville four weeks ago.
led by Walter Daniels 32
points. But the Dogs didn't
have to a ort \ about Vol
standout Terry Crosby who
missed the first encounter due
to injury Crosby on one wing
plus Keggic Johnson on the
other will give Georgia a
tougher defensive assignment
this time around
“It's going to he a problem
stopping those two.'' Guthrie
said “One gets on one wing,
one gets on the other and they
just fire away iBert Bertel
kamp is also a fine outside
shooter What we are going to
try to do is get back on defense
quickly and hopetully he able
to cut down on their last break
It we can do that and get a
hand up against their shooters.
I think we ll be able to contain
them.” he added
Johnson. Tennessee's leading
scorer, had 19 points against
tin Dogs in the first game He
touted out with about six
minutes to go, indirectly
helping Georgia end a long
losing streak on the Vols' home
court
Crosby had 22 points in
Wednesday night's 90-77 loss at
Kentucky, and has come on

we had better play mighty

very capable of beating us.”
Georgia will be hoping to win

an upset that forced the
Volunteers to settle for the
SEC co-championship
The Bulldogs hope to stay on
the same consistency plane
they were on in Tuscaloosa
Monday night, despite losing a
late lead and the game 67-66
"It's tough anytime to bounce
back." Guthrie said, “but it's
one of those things you've got
to do Personally. I'd rather
lose by one like we did against
Alabama than to lose like we
did at Mississippi State (last
Saturday. 68-45). We played
great against Alabama, and we
played pretty good against
State, but they just dominated
the game on us But 1 think
Monday's game was indicative
in that we can play mighty
good at times.”
Hon Webb, who hurt an
ankle against LSU two weeks
ago and missed the road trip
"Ron's ankle is still bothering
him and he’s not at full
speed.'' Guthrie said “He's
close to being back where he
was and 1 expect him to he
available Saturday.”
“Walter Daniels had a
couple of off games, but in all
fairness to him he was injured
as well as suffering from the
flu.” Guthrie continued
“Against Alabama, he vomited
twice at the half because of the
flu and played hard despite
it.”
Georgia is still on a roller
coaster ride from game to
game and Guthrie is looking
for the right button to push to
keep the Bulldogs on the up
cycle.
“We re beginning to pick up
some consistency, but we’re
still not consistent on our big
men inside,’’ Guthrie said.
'We have got to get Lavon
(Mercer) and Lucius (Foster)
and our inside people playing
like they are capable of
playing, in every game That is
hopefully 12 or 15 points in
eight or 10 rebounds and five to
10 blocked shots out of both of
them." Guthrie added
BULLDOG NOTES Guthrie
and his staff are also busy
looking at high school pros
pects as the prep tournaments
are nearing "We hope to bring
in three to four players.”
Guthrie said. “We'd like to
bring in a quick shooting
forward, an outside shooting
guard, and a big. strong
rebounder for inside.

What earlier this season
looked to be a near certainty
now appears to be an
impossibility for the Georgia
Bulldogs
What I'm speaking about, of
course, is achieving a winning
season. Georgia Coach John
Guthrie has been futilely
chasing that magic number of
14 wins for five years now
He’s come up empty handed
every time. The best he’s done
is 12-14 in 1975. The worst was
6-20 in 1973
Only slightly into this season
it looked like this might be the
year for the winning mark. On
DM 29 the Dogs beat
Louisville and had a 5 3 record
with 19 games to play. All they
needed was nine wins to reach
their goal
Since that date the Dogs
have gone 5-9 and are
currently 10-12 with five games
left If Georgia could win four
of their last five games they
would have their winning
season.
But I don't think they will.
Look at who they play:,
Tennessee, Vanderbilt and
Kentucky are here and Auburn
and Florida close out the
season on the road My way of
thinking is Georgia will beat
both Tennessee and Vandy but
will have a chance against
Auburn
The Kentucky and Florida
games are different matters,
though I’ve seen Kentucky
and they’re awesome: they
scare me they're so good. I
know they lost to LSU last
week. That’s alright, the
Tigers belong in the NBA.
Kentucky belongs in a league
all by themselves most of the
time.
Ovality is clearly

Qod says N Is the “looT that says In his heart there Is no

works. From about the year 1S17 the Russian government
has been saying “there is no God!” Consider how corrupt
they have been end are. end how this corruption has spread
over so much ol the world. Consider how this devil doctrine
has affected our own great nation — until recent years
probably the most God-fearing and Qod biassed nation on
the earth By their own testimony Russian officials are fools
in the sight of God. yet we gave them recognition a little over
forty years ago. and now this corruption has so spread In our
own land that we don't permit the recognition of God
Almighty in our public schools, but give license to fools to
teach our young the Russian devil doctrine that there Is no
God. or God is deed!"
Not only does God say that the fools who say thars Is no

persecution, mess murder, and no telling what else! They
planned “abominable works” for many other nations and

how we have fallen for It! May God have mercy upon us!

The following quote It from a Historian concerning the

“As tor the weet It wee left to the mercies of the

plundering were the order of the day One thing — one thing
alone — saved Europe from complete destruction, from a
return to the days of the cave-men and the hyenef This was
the Church — the flock of humble men and women who for
many centuries had confessed themselves the followers ol
Jesus .“ Such are the hope of our nation and world
today As an individual see to II that your faith It genuine, end
not corrupt.
Florida is always double
tough in "Alligator Alley" and
this year the Gators have a
grudge to settle with the Dogs
In the first meeting of the
teams here, which the Dogs
won. Georgia's Lu Foster
knocked out three of Malcolm
Cesare's teeth. Gator fans
won’t forget that. Even worse,
the Gator players won’t either
Especially Cesare. He must
think about it every time he
tries to eat an apple
So my prediction calls for, at
best, a 13-15 record. Losing,
yes. hut still Guthrie’s best
season. As inconsistent as this
bunch of Bulldogs are. it's
unrealistic to believe that they
could play all five of those
games like they did in the
Louisville Classic and other
points during the season.
The first indication of the
choppy waters this team was
going to have to navigate this
season came in the game
following the Lousiville win.
The opponent was Auburn.
Auburn had lost two games in
^ row. They were playing on
Georgia's court. So what
happens? Georgia loses 76-69
And it wasn't that close
Something occurred in that
game that has continued to
plague the Dogs through the
season: their two “twin
towers of power” Lavon
Mercer and Lu Foster got beat
badly on the hoards by smaller
and smarter men The Auburn
players blocked out the two
6-10 Bulldogs and that was
really the story of the game.
For instance. Foster played 36
minutes and had only three
rebounds Sounds unbelievable
right 0 Well, Mercer topped
that fantastic statistic later in
the season
It happened in the Vandy
game which the Dogs lost
64-56 The statistic is still hard
for me to grasp. Here it is: at
halftime of that game. Mercer
had four points and four
rebounds After playing 18
minutes in the second half.
Mercer had one more point
and no rebounds. Eighteen
minutes of play and not a
single rebound. And at 6-10. I
still can’t believe it.
It’s hard to say Mercfcr
wasn’t hustling. He usually
doesn't know the meaning of
the word rest. Maybe it was
just one of those nights for
him.But between Mercer and
record. They say he just can't
handle the players They say
that since his contract is up
this year that he should Ik* told
to hit the road. They say he
has been given enough time to
prove what he can do Or can’t
do
I say give him a one year
extension on his contract He’ll
have the entire team back next
year (with the exception of sub
Mike Thorne) and I believe it
only fair to give him the
opportunity to see if he can get
the team to jell.
(?) David Westin
jpk Sports editor
Foster there have been
many "of those nights.”
too
In the games Georgia has
won, it has been because
Mercer and Foster have
played well—at the same time.
That’s how they heat Alabama,
Georgia Tech, Florida, Louis
ville and Ohio State When they
don't play together, they lose
to teams like Ole Miss.
I don't mean to he picking on
Mercer and Foster too much.
The whole team has been
unoredictahle, but those two
have been more erratic than
the others.
But. of course, all this
inconsistent play leads to the
door of Guthrie's office. Here's
what this year’s critics say:
They say Guthrie has loads of
talent yet hasn't produced.
They say there really hasn’t
been any serious injuries to
use as an excuse for the
To me, it wouldn't make
sense to let him go after he has
helped develop most of these
players A new coach with a
new system would set the team
back into the Dark Ages It’s
only common sense to renew
his contract for a year.
And there’s another thing
Guthrie has improved the team
this year Last year at this time
with five games to go. the
record was 8-14 overall and
2-11 in the SEC Now it’s 10-12
and 4-9 in the SEC. That may
not sound like much, but when
you’re talking about Georgia
basketball, it is.
I think if Guthrie is given a
one year extension he will earn
a long term pact after next
year 1 don’t think it would Ik*
appropriate to give him a big
extension after his five years is
up this year He is. after all.
45-82 as the Bulldog mentor.
That’s a long way away from
impersonating John Wooden
P. O BOX 405. DECATUR. GA. 30031
Some say Guthrie has been
given enough time. I say one
more year is only fair •
Everybody who has ever
talked to Guthrie automati
cally admires him as a person
I agree. A man with mor£
class and integrity I haven't
met. But unfortunately, he’s
also a basketball coach. And so
far. at Georgia, not a veryf
successful one.
Sometimes it is hard to
separate the man from the
coach. The man is truly »
winner The coach, on paper
anyway, is a loser. And it hurts
to see the turmoil he has to go
through as a loser. •
A quick example: After
every home game Guthrie
comes out and talks to the
press Win or lose, he is always
cooperative. He gets asked
tough questions He answers
them After the LSU game
which Georgia lost badly, hf
appeared, as usual, to meet the
press He was downcast, but
no more than usual after a
loss.
But there was something
strange in the air and it
seemed like everybody felt it.
All the writers realized just
how badly Guthrie wants tb
win and how dt»ep the losses
strike him Normally, we ask
him questions* for about 15
minutes. But on that day, n*
more than seven minutes
passed before we were finish
ed. No one had the desire to do
any deep probing on this day.
It was truly a sad moment.
It will he another sad
moment if his contract isn’t
renewed for another year. Ho
should Ik* given the chance to
see what these players he has
coached for four years can do
next year.
I’m guessing he can get
them to dt> better than they
have this year.
