playing time last year, was
going to really show his stuff
this >ear At the start of the
year, it looked like everything
was going his way He was
starting at one guard position
who logged a big chunk of But seven games into the
Red and Black
sports
season, the bottom fell out for
Daughtry
In the Ohio State game.
Daughtry was yanked from the
starting lineup in favor of
freshman Charles Carter. Car
ter had played well in the
previous game 'Furman) and
thus got the nod over
Daughtry
As fortune would have it,
Georgia, with Carter at the
point guard slot, went on to
upset both Ohio State and
Louisville in winning the
Louisville Classic. But Daugh
try had little, if anything to do
with those wins. Against the
Buckeyes he saw only seven
minutes of playing time. In the
championship game against
Louisville he never even hit the
court.
"It bothered me because I
didn't get to play much,”
Daughtry said Tuesday "I felt
like I didn’t help the team in
any way. After we beat
Louisville I was just as happy
as anybody in the world for the
team but I felt bad for myself
because I didn't help do
anything for the team."
For the next 10 games.
Carter kept a firm grasp on
that guard position. And as the
games passed. Daughtry had
to keep fighting off discourage
ment It wasn’t easy.
"Yeah. I got down.” Daugh
try said “You know, that’s
natural. I think any player will
get down when a player comes
up and takes his position. It's a
mental thing that bothers you.
I just took care of it and triet
to get my game together ”

Why does Daughtry think he
became a "designated sitter
Was Carter playing better than
he was?
"No. 1 don’t think he was
playing better." Daughtry says
firmly. "I just think there were
some things I had to work out.
I guess Coach Guthrie thought
it was best to sit me and let it
work out like that He's the
coach, you know, and he knows

what’s best for my future and I
look at him in understanding
toward that situation."
There was one thing in
particular that Guthrie wanted
Daughtry "to work out." And
that had to do with Daughtry's
hell-bent-for-leather style of
play.
I needed to slow myself
down a lot." Daughtry recalls.
"1 had a tendency, or he'd
(Guthrie) tell me, I had a
tendency to be moving so fast
that I just overreacted to the
ball and didn't get myself
ready. I would be too anxious,
trying to start things when
they weren’t even there.”
As Daughtry decreased the
speed of his play, he increased
his playing time. It was a slow
process, but 10 games after
losing his job. he claimed it
again. When that happened the
season began all over for
Daughtry. It doesn’t surprise
the affable man from Enigma
that he won his job back He
knew he would all along.
"I always had confidence
that I would get it back," he
says with satisfaction. "The
only thing I was waiting on
was to just get an opportunity
to prove myself. So once I got
the chance I proved myself
and showed that I was ready to
gel my position back."
It was a single-minded
determination to play as well
as he could that helped
Daughtry recapture his job.
And it payed off.
"At times when I was not
playing much I would get down
but I see it like this: I hustle
regardless of what's going on.
I'm always gonna hustle,
always gonna do 100 percent.
I’ll give all I’ve got regardless
of what's the problem or what.
I’m gonna give the best I’ve
got.”
One of the top high school
prospects when he graduated
in 1976. Daughtry had a buyers
market to choose from as far
as colleges go. The question
arises if he ever regretted
coming to Georgia during his
period of inactivity.
"I was recruited pretty high
but I didn't think that I
shouldn't have came here even
though I wasn’t playing. I still
say what I did said when I
signed: It was a good decision
because I think we’re capable
of winning."
So far. at least, the winning
Daughtry speaks of hasn’t
materialized. His freshman
year, the team went 9-18. With
four games left this year, the
record stands at 10-13. No
matter. Daughtry still sees
promise for the team.
"Although we re not having
a real great season, the fact is
we’ve beaten some real great
schools and at least that will
help our attitude going into
next year
Georgia's last four games
are against Vanderbilt. Au
burn, Kentucky and Florida.
Ever the optimist, Daughtry
thinks Georgia has a chance in
all those games including
Kentucky.
"We’ve got a chance against
anyone who we play,” he
reasons. "We’ve just got to get
our minds right and get ready.
We've got so much talent we’re
capable of doing anything
anytime.”
Daughtry never said the
team needs to do well in these
final four games in order to
save Guthrie’s job.
He didn't have to.
Most observers feel like
Guthrie's job rests on how his
team does on this final swing
No one knows this better
than the players.
Perhaps Daughtry put it best
when he said of the final four
games. "We really feel like we
need to win really really bad to
go out this year as a winner."
