a misdemeanor, were Dan
Russell Hardin. 19, Victor
Corlysle Sullivan. 20. and Asa
Vernon Swift, 20. all members
of the Sigma Alpha Epsilon
fraternity. 247 Pulaski Street.
The three students arrested
Wednesday were allegedly
involved in an incident at
Brumby at 3:15 a m. Sunday.
According to a police spokes
man. they were returning with
their dates and wanted to
escort them to their room.
But the night clerk refused,
because it was after the 2 a m.
visiting hour limit, he said
"They gave the guy a hard
time, then left.”
Twenty minutes later, the
three returned to Brumby, and
reportedly "jumped over the
counter” and assaulted the
desk clerk, the spokesman
said. After the clerk attempted
to telephone the police, one of
the three "jerked the phone out
of his hands." he added
All three were taken to the
Clarke County Jail and re
leased into the custodv of
fraternity advisor Charles Hor
ton.
Police also said they were
awaiting the autopsy results
concerning the death of Uni
versity graduate student Larry
Anderson, of New Orleans. La
Anderson's body was found
last month in a wooded area
behind the Russell parking lot
Specimens were recently
sent to the State Crime Lab in
Atlanta, police said, and no
foul play is suspected in the
death

‘Special’ races
By SI SAN RKl
About 200 developmentally disabled children will compete
today lor track and field medals at the local Special Olympics
from 9 a m to 1 pm . at the University intramural field
Wheelchair races, the 50 meter dash. 200 meter dash. 400 meter
dash, a softball throw, and the standing broad jump are the
events in which the children will compete, according to Frances
Harrell, assistant coordinator for health, physical education and
recreation at the Athens unit of the Georgia Retardation Center
The children participating in the Olympics have been training
since January. Harrell said She is coordinating the local meet,
which will be held at the University track
The rules and regulations we will follow haven't been
modified They are the same as those for any track and field
event." Harrell said.
The participants will be grouped according to their ages and
performance levels, "The events will be more exciting because
each person will be racing, throwing and jumping against others
with abilities similar to his own," Harrell added
First place winners will qualify for the district Special
Olympics and have the chance to advance to the state and
national levels About 500,000 children participate in the Special
Olympics across the country
Ribbons will be awarded Thursday for first through sixth
places in each group, and no more than six people will
participate in each group
Participants in the Olympics are from the special education
classes in the riarke County schools. Hope Haven School and the
Athens unit of the Georgia Retardation Center Their ages vary
from one and a half years to about 48 years, but most of them
are school-age children
The Special Olympics program, which began in 1968. was
designed specifically for retarded children but this year
encompasses the more general category of the developmentally
disabled
'We are trying to encourage the normalization process for the
kids, so we don t label them as ‘mentally retarded' anymore."
Harrell said. Developmental disabilities include learning and
behaviorial disorders, cerebral palsy, and epilepsy, in addition to
mental retardation, she said
The Olympics were organized by six graduate assistants
working at the center in adaptive physical education or
theraputic recreation. Many University students studying
exceptional children, recreation, and physical education are
volunteering their time to help at the meet with registration or to
work as messengers, timers or huggers, Harrell said.
"The huggers will stand at the finish line and congratulate the
children. They will see that those who finish stay in their lanes
until they get their ribbons." Harrell said.
The ratio of participants to volunteers will be about two to one
counting the aides and staff members. "Some of these kids need
one-on-one supervision, and others don't need much at all,”
Harrell said Student volunteers are to check in at the desk
Thursday morning to get their perspective job assignments.
In the event of rain, the meet will be on March 10.
