Tin going to make a major
contribution in life,” Wilma
Kudolph told herself as a child
growing up in Tennessee
Confined to leg braces until
age 12, Kudolph overcame
polio and became the first and
only woman to win three gold
medals in one olympiad
Kudolph told of her childhood
and her preparation for the
Olympics in a speech at Keed
Quad Tuesday night
The 20th of 22 children,
Kudolph grew up in the small

town of Clarksville. Tenn.
While still wearing leg braces,
she learned how to play
basketball by throwing a tennis
ball through a peach basket
nailed to a tree
AT AGE 13 she tried out for
her high school basketball
team but was not accepted. “1
was just too stubborn to give
up." she said The following
year she made the team and
averaged 40 points a game
during that season
After conquering basketball.
Kudolph turned to track
because *‘I wanted to beat my
girlfriend at it and it got me
out of doing chores at home.”
She was so outstanding a
runner that she went to
Tennessee State University for
training In 1956. at age 15, she
won a bronze medal at the
Melbourne. Australia Olym
pics.
Upon graduation from high
school. Kudolph enrolled at
Tennessee State.
“AT THAT time, there was
no such thing as athletic
scholarships for women." she
said.
She worked at a campus job

training paid off. Kudolph won
gold medals in the KM) meter
dash, the 200 meter, and the
400 meter relay at the Kome.

Kudolph stopped running
competitively in 1963 although
she says “the most difficult
thing for an athlete to do is
retire " She has been active in
coaching and still jogs a mile
each day when not travelling.
“IT TAKES dedication, moti

achieve anything, not just in
women's athletics." She said,
“it's a shame” that more

campus are not involved in
athletics.
"Wilma," a recent NBC-TV
movie based on her life, was
the "First all-true TV movie
ever,” she said. She added that
she was pleased that, in spite
of the movie’s seriousness, it
