In the race for the only
contested Clarke County Com
mission post, incumbent Herbert
Logan assured the county
Democratic Committee Mon
day night of an overwhelming
victory.
Logan, the Post II Commis
sioner, is being challenged by
Republican Ray Colglazier in
the Nov. 7 general primary.
Colglazier has said voters are
ready for some new faces on
the commission and that many
Democrats will vote Repub
lican because they want a
two-party system in Clarke
County. He is a political
newcomer.
Logan, however, emphasized
the strength of the Democratic
Party in the county by saying
9000 voters participated in the
Democratic primary Aug. 8.

Audit
The auditors criticised the
library's account of the collec
tion's size.
"We see no reason why an
experienced book person could
not have made a relatively
accurate estimate in a reason
able amount of time, especially
in anticipation of a purchase

not be proved or disproved,
leaving the matter to be “the

As for the Georgia Room, the
auditors found “considerable
friction’’ between that unit and

Logan referred to the pri

for his position as Democratic
candidate for the Commission
post by saying the summer had
been “rocky at times.” How

A motion to contribute $150
to Logan for his general
election campaign was made
by Homer Cooper. Logan s

the runoff.
It was pased by a committee
vote, with an ammendment

Ever find yourself short about two dollars
just when that second pitcher of beer would
hit the spot? Those dollars might have been
saved if you hadn't bought something at the
University bookstore.
Rumors have it that the bookstore is
over priced. We have found this may be the
case, but not in every instance.
The Red and Black surveyed nine toiletry
items picked at random and compared
prices charged at the bookstore with three
discount drug stores located in downtown
Athens (King Discount, Revco, and
Eckerd’s).
Of the nine items surveyed, all were found
to be cheaper at stores other than the
bookstore.
Manager William T. Chambers said the
bookstore could not compare price-wise with
discount drug stores because they did not
buy items in large volume. He also said
the bookstore's prices are “about the same”
as “middle stores.”
Trying to survey prices charged for
stationery items, The Red and Black was
unable to make any fair comparisons

because items in the bookstore aren’t
standard.
For instance, a nofebook at the bookstore
may contain 100 sheets of paper, while a
similar notebook offered in Athens stores
may have 130 sheets. It is almost impossible
to compare prices for such items.
Interestingly, Chambers said that text
books and other required books are offered
at the bookstore with a five percent discount
off the list price. "We give our first break in
textbooks. Everything else we re competi
tive or less,” he said.
Souvenir items, those offered to nostalgia-
minded alumni, are used as a counter-bal
ance to the discount on texts. Chambers
added
The bookstore operates on a “break-even”
principle. The operation, according to
Chambers, grosses 22 percent annually to
offset all operating expenses. Profit margin
for the year is about one percent, he said*
Buying small items such as shampoo may
be a convenience at the bookstore, but it is
still cheaper to walk or drive a few extra
minutes to save money Especially when
you’re on a student budget.
