MOT WORST TV YEAR
New season in full swing
NEW YORK (UPI) From
outer space to inner city, from
jet-lagging stewardesses to jet
setting ex-con, from Joe
Namath to Mary Tyler Moore,
the new Television Season has
arrived.
Conventional wisdom in tele
vision land has always held
that the networks were lucky if
a third of the new product
achieved enough audience to
return for a second season-
last year almost everything
that wasn’t on ABC flopped.
How does it look for this
year? To figure what may go
it’s necessary to look not only
at the program but also at the
schedule. Here’s a night by
night prognosis on the new
shows just introduced, all
given in Eastern time.
Wednesday which may be live
and may be off-beat or even
bizarre but remains vanety.
At 10 p m. Vega} follows
Charlie's Angels on ABC and
looks like a sure winner, in
part thanks to the “Angels”
lead-in, and also the opposition
which has programed movies
for that time slot. It takes a
real crowd-pleaser movie to
move the audience away from
“Angels.”
MONDAY: CBS offers two new
half-hour sitcoms inthc* 8-9
m. slot—WKKP In Cincinnati
about the inad menagerie at a
radio station and People a
ro .sipy magazine of celebrities
and interesting unknowns.
WKIU* has great potential,
faces a sticky wicket against
NBC’s top rated show of last
year, Little House on the
Prairie, and ABC’s newly
shifted Welcome Back. Kotter.
If the ratings aren’t satisfact
ory. CBS might try switching
WKIU* to an easier time
period.
People also must buck
Prairie, but has an easier time
against ABC’s Operating Petti
coat. Unfortunately, People’s
opening chapter was weak and
only a herculean effort will sell
TUESDAY: Again in the 8-9
I t; in. slot, CBS has the critics'
I tavorite, Paper Chase, with
I John Houseman recreating his
j movie role as the haughty law
professor who is just one of the
with which a group of
attractive Ivy League law
students must cope.
At the same time NBC has
Jack Albertson in Grandpa
Goes to Washington which
[ takes bipartisan swipes at
[ politicians hut avoids real
political satire as if it were a
social disease.
They compete with the two
inovl popular shows on televi
sion last year—llappy Days
and I a verm* & Shirley. CBS
might go for prestige and
a ' low ratings, or try
cinotber spot for Paper Chase.
Grandpa probably can’t stand
up to youth.

THURSDAY: Mork and
Mindy on ABC from 8-8:30
could be the sleeper, thanks to
the super talents of Robin
Williams as spaceling Mork.
The show precedes What’s
Happening and is opposed on
CBS by the elderly Waltons
and on NBC by Project UFO.
At 10 p.m., NBC airs W.E.B.
the soap-opera saga of a young
woman network television ex
ecutive which should be
swamped by Family on ABC
and Harnaby Jones grey power
on CBS.
FRIDAY: Joe Namath just
might make a touchdown on
NBC’s Waverly Wonders at 8
p.m., with his surprisingly
charming performance over
coming a woeful story line,
followed by Who’s Watching
the Kids? which looks good.
The duo plays opposite ABC’s
Donny & Marie and CBS’ not
so wonderful Wonder Woman.
At 10 p.m. CBS’s poor
imitaion of Angels, the three
stewardae of Flying High,
competes with NBC's Eddie
Capra Mysteries and ABC’s
movie. Critically, the movie
ought to win over inept Eddie
and jiggly girls. Realistically,
the girls probably will fly
pretty high in the ratings.
SATURDAY: ABC’s Apple
Pie at 8:30 p.m., following the
strong Carter Country and
leading into Love Boat, doesn’t
deserve to make it on merit
but probably will opposite CBS’
Good Times and the
second half of NBC’s ClllPs.
CBS’ jiggling American Girls
at 9 p.m. will flop against
ABC’s Love Boat, which will
sail past NBC’s specials and
Undercover Cop. At 10 p.m.,
NBC’s Sword of Justice, with
its smiling jet-set excon hero
and nonchalant air might take
some numbers from ABC’s
Fantasy Island and CBS’
Dallas.

1 SUNDAY: Hattlestar Galac-
tica on ABC will battle it out
with Mary Tyler Moore on CBS
and Big Event on NBC. The
Hattlestar strategy includes
spending $1 million an hour for
the first seven hours including
the three-hour premier for
dazzling special effects. The
betting is on Hattlestar. despite
Mary’s Charm.
At 10 p.m., brash lawyer Kaz
on CBS goes against Lifeline.
NBC’s continuing saga of real
lifedoctors, with ABC providing
a movie. Lifeline looks a
goner, with Kaz ratings
dependant on the movie
selection.

"WHY DO THE HEATHEN RAGE?"
Psalms 2:1 and Acts 4:25
John Bunyan wrote Pilgrim's Progress while In prison. He
spent about twelve years In |all resisting the civil and church
"powers that be" because they wanted him to worship and
serve God In accordance with that' rules and regulations.
Instead of according to his own convictions and conscience.
MaiSy consider this hook second only to the Bible In
developing the character and greatness of the English speak
ing peoples.Bunyan advised his own children and Christians
to spend • little time each day thinking about their own
funeral, not to make them sad and depressed, but rather that
such feelings and spirits might be overcome and banished so
that they could meet the death experience In strong talth and
loyoue expectation Surely this makes sense and Is great ad
vice in view of the fact, ‘It Is appointed unto man once to die.
but after this the judgement.” Hebrews 9:27.
Some time ago the writer attended the funeral service of a
friend he had known most of his life. The minister said the
service had been planned by the deceased For six months,
or more, she had been expecting and looking forward to
death, testifying she believed her time had come end the was
willing and wanted to depart and be with the Lord.
She requested that at her funeral service the minister read
tha 12th chapter of Roman*, and than read, not aing, the
words ot the hymn, ‘Amazing Grace." At I sat and listened I
had the Impression that her* was a massage sent back to us
from the Spirit world by one who had |u«t gone to be with the
Lord.
This 12th chapter of Romans reveal* the duties and doing
and works of a faith which la ‘the gift of God." Wa suggest
you study the chapter and get familiar with all the duties It re
quires of tha Christian, and‘examine yourself, whether ye be
In the talth."
We quote part of the words of the hymn "Amazing Grace".
Amazing grace how sweet the sound that saved a wretch
like met Twas grace that taught my heart to fear, and grace
my tears relieved; How precious did that grace appear the
hour I first* believed. Through many dangers, tolls end
snares, I have already come: Twas grace that brought me
safe thus far and grace will lead me home. When we've been
there ten thousand years, bright shining as the sun; We've no
less days to sing God’s praise than when we-first begun."
Go<fsGrace will do the same for "Whosoever Will" come In
faith.
