Bulldogs fall hard to
South Carolina 27-10
Biggest win for Carlen at SC
JVwins 20-13
By BRUCE HUNTER
Fullback Rock Martin went over left guard and into the end
zone with 20 seconds left in the game to give the Georgia junior
varsity football squad a 20-13 come-from-behind victory over
Clem son Sunday afternoon in Sanford Stadium.
After a sluggish start in the opening half, when the offense
couldn't get untracked, the Bulldogs rallied and scored all of
their 20 points in the second half. Both teams were hurt by
turnovers and penalties, but Georgia was able to put together
several key drives to win.
The Dogs ground out 202 yards and picked up another 68
through the air. while the Ticers rushed for only 110 yards and
passed for 143. Mark Williams and Anthony Alford led the
Georgia attack with 92 and 90 yards rushing respectively.
Tiger quarterback Brad Sanders threw five interceptions and
Clemson also lost two fumbles. Barty Batson threw Georgia's
only interception, as he and Davy Sawyer shared the
quarterbacking chores for the Dogs. Clemson recovered three
Bulldog fumbles
Clemson threatened in the first quarter, but interceptions by
Tim Martin and Jeff Lott and a fumble recovery by Doug
Barnett stopped the attack Georgia fumbled just before the end
of the quarter, and Clemson recovered at the Georgia 8-yard line.
Clemson drove to the four on their first possession, but two
penalties and a bobbled snap moved the ball back to the 17 where
they missed a 33-yard field goal attempt
Following another Georgia fumble, the Tigers took possession
at midfield and drove to the Georgia 9-yard line where Alex
Garrett swept around the left side for the touchdown Georgia
had a long drive ended by a penalty and a broken play, and
Clemson took a 7-0 lead into halftime
The Dogs got a big break in the third quarter when Richard
Nedelman fell on a Tiger fumble at the Clemson five-yard line.
On second down from the four. Mark Williams took Batson's
pitch and swept around right end for the score Dave Allison
converted the extra point, and the game was tied. 7-7.
Allison missed two field goal efforts of 43 yards, but he was
perfect on attempts of 23 and 24 yards to give the Dogs a 13-7
lead in the final quarter
After a Georgia punt, the Tigers took over at their own 28-yard
line with less than five minutes remaining At that point, it
looked like the Dogs' six point lead would hold up. but the show
was only beginning
On third down and six from the 32. Clemson wide receiver
Hollis Hall lined up beside his team’s bench, and no player on the
Georgia team saw him until he had caught Sanders' pass and
was strolling into the end zone for the tying score.
The drama continued to build when the Tigers' extra point
attempt, which cleared the uprights to put them ahead. 14-13 was
nullified by a penalty. Clemson's second attempt was left of the
mark, and the game remained tied with 4:10 left to play.
Williams returned the Clemson kickoff to his own 26 Alford
picked up two first downs for the Dogs on third down plays with
runs of five and seven yards, and Batson hit Mac Thompson with
a 17 yard pass to move the Dogs up the field
With the ball on the Clemson 29. Alford picked up 13 more
yards to move the ball to the 16. Then, two plays later, on third
and one from the seven. Martin, who is listed as a defensive back,
scampered in for the winning points
Both teams were hurt by a rash of penalties, as the
inexperience of the teams took its toll Georgia was penalised
eight times for 74 yards and Clemson 14 times for 126 yards

COLUMBIA. SC The law
of averages finally caught up
with Vince Dooley and his
Georgia Bulldogs Saturday
night
South Carolina took total
control in the second half and
soundly whipped Georgia 27-10
before a packed house of over
56.000 in Williams-Brice Sta
dium
The victory was the first one
for the Gamecocks in the
series since 1959. and also the
first loss tor a Dooley coached
Georgia team this season.
Georgia now leads tne series
with 26 wins, five losses and
two ties.
Carolina exploded for 426
yards of total offense and kept
Georgia's defense on the field
entirely too much, expecially
in the second half In the third
quarter, the Bulldogs' pos-
ession time totaled only three
minutes, due in part to Georgia
turnovers
But the Gamecocks deserve
the credit for controlling the
game's tempo, expecially from
the offensive standpoint
"We just took a good licking
in every phase of the game.”
Dooley said in the Georgia
dressing room after the game
‘South Carolina was well
prepared and they came to
play: that's as simple as I can
put it.”
Georgia's offense committed
six turnovers, a statistic that
had not plagued the Dogs in
earlier contests against Baylor
and Clemson.
“Going in. I knew our
offense couldn't keep playing
mistake free football.” Dooley
said "Tonight, our fears were
confirmed."
The first time South Carolina
had the ball, their offense
proved to be Georgia's
toughest test defensively so far
this season
Jim Carlen's Gamecocks
drove 82 yards in 14 plays to
take a quick 7-0 lead Johnnie
Wright scored from three
yards out
Georgia's only true scoring
drive followed The Dogs
moved from their own 17 yard
line to the Carolina 14. but
faced a fourth down and one as
the first quarter ended Dooley
called on Rex Robinson who
extended his string to six
straight field goals for the
season Robinson's boot was
from 32 yards and the score
was narrowed to 7-3
The Dogs got the ball again
three minutes later On third
and 11 at their own 19. Georgia
surprised Carolina with Willie
McClendon carrying around
right end McClendon broke
free and outran the secondary
for an 81-yard touchdown, and
the Bulldogs enjoyed their only
lead of the night. 10-7.
Carolina got their offense
cranked up again and went 64
yards to take a 13-10 lead
Quarterback Garry Harper
passed seven yards to Willie
Scott for the score, and Eddie
Leopard's conversion was
wide
"We stopped ourselves in the
first half, quarterback Jeff
Pyburn reflected "We felt we
could come out in the second
half and do basicallv the same
things and be successful "
But turnovers contributed to
the Bulldogs' downfall the rest
of the way. The offense
stopped themselves with costly
fumbles and interceptions,
while Carolina continued to
gain momentum Two forty
five yard drives in the second
half by Carolina made the final
score 27-10
"Our intensity was consid
erably lacking. ' defensive
coordinator Erk Russell said in
review of his unit’s play.
"They just ran right at us It
was simple, but effective."
"Personally. I didn't feel that
they would stick it to us like
they did.” Russell added
BULLDOG NOTES Willie
McClendon rushed for 150
yards on 20 carries, and is
ahead of the pace set by Frank
Sinkwich for the single season
rushing record by a Georgia
runner Sinkwich rushed for
1.103 yards in 1941
Fullback Ronnie Stewart
injured his knee and his status
for the Ole Miss game Sat-
urda\ is doubtful.

COLUMBIA. S.C. - The South
Carolina lockerroom was ex
tremely jubilant after the
Gamecocks 27-10 victory over
the Georgia Bulldogs Saturday
night.
Reasons for the extreme
excitement were several in
number The win represented
the first Carolina victory over
the Dogs since 1959
The Gamecocks defeated a
team that was previously
unbeaten and in the process
rolled up 426 yards and 27
points on a defense that had
allowed only two touchdowns
in its first two games
They were ready to enjoy
themselves after a heart
breaking tie with Kentucky
and an even tougher loss to
Duke
. Still, in all the excitement, the
Gamecock players and coaches
had plenty of good things to
say about the Georgia football
team.
Carolina coach Jim Carlen
called the coaching job Vince
Dooley has done at Georgia
"the best in my four years at
Carolina”.
“This was the best game
we’ve played and the biggest
win we’ve had since I've been
here.” Carlen said.
"Our offensive line played
very well Anytime you gain
323 yards on the ground
against Georgia then you've
played a super game.” he
added.
The Georgia defense did a lot
of shifting af r the Carolina
offense was set. Did this affect
the Gamecocks'’
"I think they shifted because
we forced them to by moving
our backs." Carlen said.’ "I
though they might try to adjust
but I'm glad they shifted
because the defense doesn't
have as much time to get set.”
Sophomore fullback Georgia
Rogers, who ran for 128 yards
against the Dogs after gaining
150 yards against Duke a week
earlier, felt Carolina's "time
had come" to win
"We had looked forward to
playing Georgia all week and
were really ready.” the
Duluth. Ga. native said "Our
offensive line did a good job."
"They have a real good team
and a great defensive coach.”
Rogers said. "Their defense hit
whenever they wanted to and
hit real hard "
Senior center Danny Clancy
anchors the Carolina offensive
line that enabled the Game
cock backs to roll up 426 total
yards, including two backs
with over 100 yards rushing.
"I think we were able to
keep them off balance.”
Clancy said "I did expect a
lower scoring game because of
the way they had shut down
Baylor and Clemson "
"We feel like we can run on
anyone and the run opens up
the pass Georgia has a super
ballclub. though, and will have
a super season." he added.
Sophomore quarterback
Garry Harper had one of his
best games as he completed
nine of his 12 passes for 103
yards.
We re trying to get better
week by week and work on
getting outside more." Harper
said “1 think we were
successful tonight but I'll tell
you. I really know I’ve been in
a football game I’m really
beat up "
"We knew Georgia had a
good football team." Harper
said What really impresses
me about their team is that
they played a good, clean
game. They played really
tough but there were no cheap
shots which is not always the
case when a team is getting
beat.”
The Georgia Bulldogs are no
longer undefeated and as
coach Vince Dooley said "were
whipped in every phase of the
football game by a team that
was better prepared than we
were " They also came away
with the respect of their
opponent, however, which is
also not always the case.
The Georgia Women’s Rugby
Football Club will hold its
second organizational meeting
tonight at 7 in Room 405,
Memorial Hall. The club is still
accepting new members and
women interested in playing
this year are invited to attend.
The Georgia Women
Ruggers were joined by Emory
Saturday for a scrimmage at
the intramural fields.
Rena Ferneyhough, the
Georgia women's coach, said
the players “looked good on
the field and we re expecting a
good season this year We have
a lot of new talent in the club
and our veteran players are
looking strong.”
Ferneyhough was one of the
organizers of the women’s
rugby club in Georgia in 1976
The women took the South
eastern Championship title
that year.
The women ruggers will play
their first game of the 1978 79
season Saturday in Raleigh.
