Last Thursday, assistant
campus editor Bill Krueger
interviewed University Presi
dent Fred C. Davison The
topics of discussion included
the library's problems, the new
student center and the SGA
president This is the second
and final part of the interview
One ol my primary responsibi
lities is to see that the diploma
you get is worth more every
year and doesn't lose value
And right now it s a pretty
good commodity
I keep trying to keep in mind
as 1 view it personally the fact
that what we are really about
here is just one thing, and
that’s learning That’s the one
last year I guess if I could
have stopped the pendulum as
it sw.igs in one place, as far
as students are concerned, it
would have been as I perceive
students to be right now,
certainly as I perceived them
to be last spring
It didn't take our student
body but a short period of
time, following the recession

Question: llow does the
University of Georgia compare
with other universities across
the nation academically?
Answer: Very good I just
made a series of statements
about the University, and each
one could have been the
subject of a separate sermon.
One of them was that they just
have to accept as being the
truth that the University of
Georgia has moved solidly and
permanently into a new peer
group I understand 'his better
than most because I travel
more widely in that peer
group. While for administrative
purposes and for every other
way we belong to the state, in
our program aspects we belong
to a group now Maybe another
way to say it is that our peers
are our competitors, either
way. for the dollars we spend
in research, for the people we
hire, for the students we get.
That peer group now is the
University of Michigan, the
University of Illinois, the
University of Wisconsin, the
University of California, the
University of Texas, and other
great state research type
universities
I'm just pleased as I can be
about our acceptance nation
ally at this time And that, by
and large, is one of the
greatest things we can do tor
y’all. I think you’ll have to
always look at your diploma.
It’s kind of like a stock
certificate; it varies in value
‘One of my primary responsibilities
is to see that the diploma you get
is worth more every year and
doesn’t lose value’—Davison
thing we all do.
It's going to make this
section of the country, it’s
going to mark this country
over the next 25 years. It's
going to influence what the
rest of the United States is like
That's how good you have to
want to be.
Q: Where do you see the
University headed in the
future?
A: I think we ll continue very
much on the track we are We
will continue to try to define
and then attain excellence by
the definition of the best people
yet.
Q: llow do you view the
atmosphere of students on
campus today?
A: Well. I haven’t seen enough
of you this fall to know what
you came back like. I can tell
you the general statement I
made every time I had a
chance last spring, looking at
we had. to pick up on the fact
that when they got out of
school there were going to be
six of them and one recruiter,
instead of six recruiters and
one of them like it had been for
the generation of students just
before them I thought we had
a tremendously healthy kind of
distribution of student effort
last year.
As I looked out across the
campus I saw generally a
student body that was capable,
that was aggressive, that was
realistic, that could recognize
the facts of life pretty well.
And probably one of the most
wonderful things it regained
was its sense of humor. In fact
I think it was one of the
greatest things 1 have ever
seen as far as the recognition
of this was the race for the
SGA president last year. That
was probably the most astute
nwruunt of what the campus
moods were and appealing to
those, that I’ve ever seen Now
this young man’s got a long
bright road ahead of him. I
think, in the field of recognizing
public opinion and mounting a
campaign directed that way.
<}: Since you mentioned it.
what did you think of the
successful campaign of Itoger
"The Unknown Candidate"
Strauss for student body
president?
A: I liked it. I thought it was a
brilliant piece of strategy Just
the way he mounted that
campaign with his friends was
a very interesting thing to me.
that if I were running a public
relations firm out here I'd sure
have my eye on old Roger I d
have him tagged right now He
sensed and his advisors,
whoever they were, sensed
exactly what it was going to
take And they did it just right
I look forward to working with
him to tell you the truth. I
really do

Q: Do you view the possible
independence of The Red and
Black as good or had?
A: Well, I’ve watched it for a
long time From a personal
view point I’m not in favor of
it. It's largely for this reason,
in a society that's as litigious
as ours and in a situation in
which, like it or not. I'm
considered the publisher of The
Red and Black I’m in an
impossible situation. I have no
intentions of abridging the free
speech aspects of The Red and
Black On the other hand. I
recognize everything 1 have is
in some kind of jeopardy if
indeed a mistake of a certain
magnitude is made. The only
way I think that can be
clarified for both sides is The
Red and Black to go inde
pendent Then I guess it would

Davison loves them daugs
lx* a belter real life situation
that wav as far as the paper's
concerned.
<): A final question, what do
you think about those Georgia
Bulldogs ’
A: They’re so great. I hate to
even talk about them I’m
afraid I might break the spell
I'm strongly committed lo our
athletic teams and I live or die
by the way they do. Mrs
Davison says she just dreads
when they lose because it takes
me a week to recover But they
have been, the last two games
i Baylor and Clemson), one of
the most determined best
coached teams I have ever
seen. 1 have never seen as
much young talent work as
hard. It has been a delight
They’ve just plain outplayed
folks, and I think the coaching
staff’s plain outcoached folks
But. they have been fun to
watch, haven’t they?
