GEORGIA THEATRE CELEBRATES
>*■«* s
Dregs are crowd pleasers
By LIZ SMITH
The Dixie Dregs once again
showed their immense scope of
talent last Friday night as they
appeared at the first birthday
celebration of the Georgia
Theatre
Always a crowd pieaser in
Athens, the Dregs performed
two shows. Concert-goers lined
the streets for hours, hoping to
get good seats.
Onstage the Dregs appeared
very professional and totally in
control. Their show consisted
of songs meant to please every
taste in music; from jazz to
rock to gentler ballads, band
members mesmerized the
crowd with their own special
display of talent
Tee Lavitz, the Dregs’ new
keyboard player, excels on his
instrument, as proven in the
song “Think in A Minor." The
tune has a jazzy flair, and also
features Steve Morse on
guitar, yet another incredible
musician.
“Huron River Blues," a
smoky, sultry tune, demon
strated well just how versatile
the Dregs are. as did "Travel
Tunes.“ described by bass
player Andy West as an
“ethnic rock tune."
The band played several
songs from their new album
Night of the Living Dregs,
including “Wabash." a rollick
ing song sure to be a favorite
of Dregs fans. Also from the
new album was “Patchwork,”
a song featuring excellent
solos by Andy West, on bass,
and Allen Sloan, on violin.
The audience, however,
showed more reaction when
their old favorites were played
An especially moving song was
“Night Meets Light,” once
again displaying the overall
talent of the band. “Cruise

Steve Morse shows off his guitar talents
Control." a lively rock tune,
featured an energetic drum
solo by Rod Morgenstein with
an explosive ending
Throughout their set. the
Dregs slipped from jazz to
blues to rock without losing
any of their energy and
enthusiasm The musicians
alternated solos, proving how
talented each of the band
members really is.
The only pitfall of the
concert was the opening act.
Though he possesses a fine
voice. Andy Warberg cannot
seem to decide if he wants to
be a singer or a comedian.
Until he decides, he would be
better off being neither.
The Dixie Dregs’ new album
will be out in March and will
feature live cuts from the
Montreaux Jazz Festival held
last summer. If Friday’s
previews are any indication of
the quality of this album, it
will be one that Dregs fans will
not want to miss.
