FUTURE OF GA. BASKETBALL?
Freshmen Marbury, Goza, and Thomas
Bv NORM REILLY
When Hugh Durham w is hired as head basketball coach here
last spring there were three high school seniors, two from
Brooklyn. N Y and one A lantan. who took notice
Now freshmen on Georgia's basketbal team. Eric Marbury.
Jeff Thomas, and Lee Goza all saw the chance lo play under
Durham as a great opportunity
Marbury turned down otfers from Syracuse. Rutgers, and
South Carolina to become a bulldog He cites several factors for
this
The academic program is well-established here and a degree
is respected." Marbury said “The SEC is one of the top three
basketball conferences in the country, but mainly. 1 felt like I
wanted to play under a coach like coach Durham." he added
Thomas, who is Marbury s loommate at McWhorter Hall, did
not know Eric that well when they were high school stars in
Brooklyn last year
I only knew Eric through basketball back home. We played
together in The City Game (New York City’s all-star game* and
in an all-star game in Connecticut." Thomas explained
Thomas chose Georgia ov;r such schools as Villanova,
Virginia. Kansas State, and Rutgers "I came to Georgia because
they had never had a winning basketball program here, and
under coach Durham. I thougit I could help build a winning
tradition 1 thought I could be i pioneer for the program here."
Thomas said
Goza. who set scoring and rebounding records during his
career at Greater Atlanta Christian School, came to Athens
instead of going to Clemson, V inderbilt, or Ole Miss.
‘When I was being recruited. I believed in what coach Durham
was saying." Goza said
Marbury has started for the Dogs ever since Lucius Foster was
ruled academically ineligible and last Saturday scored a career
high 23 points in a 78-76 loss to Vandy.
"Coach Durham has confidence in me and thus has started me
the last tew games." Marbury said "His confidence has made
me more confident out on the court "
Coach Durham usually likes to gradually work his freshmen in
because there is so much to learn, but he has found it necessary
this season to play his first-year men more
"Usually, the first year is the most difficult because of the
changing style of play and the emphasis on style of play."
Durham said "When you go from your senior year in high school
to your freshmen year in college, you go from the most
experienced to the least."
Marbury averaged 32 points per game his senior season and
was a first team selection on the All Brooklyn team as well as a
second team pick on the All New York City team
He says one of the most difficult things he has had to adjust to
in college basketball has been practice.
"In high school. I used to work out on my own Also, basketball
is more of a mental game on the college level." Marbury ex
plained.
Thomas, though he has not put in as much playing time as
Marbury or Goza this season, has made his share of
contributions to the team. It was he who hit a last second shot
against Pan American over the holidays to give the Dogs a 74-72
victory.
Thomas, a first team All-New York City player, broke the
scoring record of former Boston Red Sox player Rico Petrocelli
at Sheepshead Bay High School in Brooklyn
Lee Goza and Jeff Thomas
The lack of playing time is the item which Thomas has had the
most difficulty getting accustomed to.
"I can’t say I’m satisfied with my playing time so far. but
Walter (Daniels) and Jimmy (Daughtry) are doing such a great
job that I can’t argue about it." Thomas said
"In high school." the 6’1" guard says. "I controlled the whole
ballgame It's different now In college basketball, it is the
fundamentals which are stressed most." he concluded
Goza. 6’9" has had to step in several times for starting center
Lavon Mercer when Mercer has gotten into foul trouble or has
needed a breather.
The loss of Foster has not put any added pressure on Goza.
however. "I don't really think there is any more pressure on me
than there is on any other guy.” he said
Goza says he has not set any individual goals "I figure if the
team djes well, my stuff will show ”
All three of the freshmen feel that a successful basketball
program here at Georgia is just around the corner
"I think we're coming together pretty well now. I just hope we
can keep improving." Goza said, while Marbury added. "I think
we’ll be tough and have to be reckoned with in years to come.”

NEW YOKK (UPD—Willie
Mays, the most electrifying
performer of his era. was the
only player elected to the Hall
of Fame today in a landslide
vote by the Baseball Writers
Association, although he was
not a unanimous choice.
Duing a 22-year career spent
with the New York and San
Francisco Giants and New
York Mets, Mays compiled a
302 lifetime batting average,
hit 660 home runs, had 3.283
hits, drove in 1,903 runs and
won two National League Most
Valuable Player Awards.
But mere statistics only told
part of the story of the man
many called "the most excit
ing player ever to play the
game."
Willie Mays combined the
skills of fielding, throwing,
runing. hitting for distance and
hitting for average better than
anyone else in baseball his
tory.’’ said Leo Durocher.
whose career spanned a half
century and who was Willie’s
first major league manager.
"For my money, he was the
best "
On the all-time list. Mays
ranked third in homers and
total bases, fourth in at bats
and runs scored and seventh in
hits and runs batted in.
Ty Cobb and Hank Aaron
were the only other players in
the game's history to rank in
the top six in seven key cate
gories—the other being batting
average.
During his nine-year span
from 1958 through 1966. Mays
batted more than .300 seven
times, hit between 29 and 52
homers in every season, drove
in more than 100 runs in eight
seasons, led the league in
slugging percentage three
times, in stolen bases three
times and in total bases twice
Although Mays was a great
hitter—he batted .300 or more
in 10 seasons, hit four homers
in one game April 30. 1961, hit
40 or more homers in 10
seasons and enjoyed 10 100-RBI
seasons—he is best remem
bered for his dazzling defen
sive plays in the outfield.
Mays made hundreds of
astounding defensive plays,
among them the famous catch
off Gcveland’s Vic Wertz in
the 1954 World Series which is
recognized as one of the
greatest catches in baseball
history.

Bowl officials want to schedule
the game Dec. 31 rather than
Christmas Day as specified by
CBS-TV because the holiday is
a "tremendously hard sell ”
Executive Director George
Crumbley said that if the
network, which has a three-
year contract for the Dec 25
date, doesn’t want to go along,
the bowl committee may vote
to give up the television
contract rather than play on
Dec. 25 again.
"It was a tremendously hard
sell,” Crumbley said of the
game between Georgia Tech
and Purdue “Therefore, we
have asked for a Monday, Dec.
31 game at whatever time in
the afternoon CBS would like
lo telecast the game "
The NCAA specified that the
Peach Bowl had to sell at least
40 percent of the Atlanta-Ful-
ton County Stadium capacity,
or 24,149 tickets, locally, and
the goal was achieved primar
ily because Janet Rodgers,
wife of Georgia Tech Coach
Pepper Rodgers, and other
coaches’ wives staged a
last-minute selling blitz
The participating teams will
receive about $170,000 each
from the bowl game, well
below that of the major bowl
contests, but Cumbley said a
better gate would have im
proved the payoff substantial
ly Proceeds above expenses
go to charity.
