alone Slide shows and films
are used in this course to teach
preventive crime measures as
well as how to respond when
confronted by exhibitionists,
rapists, obscene phoie callers
and "Peeping Tom’*." "When

W0 Offer in the course.”
The women’s safety program
is taught most often at sorority
houses and residence halls,
usually upon request. Stansel
said there is no need to
advertise these programs.
"Word of mouth.” h»* said, "is
our main drawing card.”
Stansel added they get much
better results by "waiting for
an invitation." "We do not
try." he said, To force it down
anybody’s throat.”
Some of the other programs
offer instruction in first aid,
food handling, and environ
mental safety. One new
accident-prevention program,
called “Save Tlie Boss." has
been "very successful, and has
received good recognition,"
according to Stansel He also
said the department is open to
any specially requested pro
grams
These training programs are
offered as a public service of
Public Safety, and the instruc
tors teach them on their own
time. "The main objective,”
Stansel said, "is to make
students aware of 'he risks
they are taking in all they do."
He added, “It’s a good feeling
to know the information you're
providing can help the per
son.”
Stansel said that anyone
wishing additional information
should contact himself or Capt.
Ernest Nix at the University
Police Department.

VD may be socially beneficial
K'P8i Students who have had a
venereal disease may, at last, take
comfort One recent study, anyway, says
students who have had infections seem to
possess more social attributes—such as
self assurance, sensitivity, and practi
cality - than those who have not.
Dr William Yarber, associate profes
sor of health at Purdue University, came
to this conclusion after an analysis of
students at seven colleges and universi
ties in the east, west and central parts of
the U.S The purpose of the study,
co-directed by Ohio State University
professor of health education Robert
Kaplan, was to investigate the stereotype
of VD victims being "irresponsible social
deviants.”
The researchers administered person
ality tests to equal numbers of hads and
had-nots, including as criteria all
sexually transmmissable diseases such
as gonorrhea, syphilis, herpes simplex
genitalis, trichomoniasis, nongonococcal
urethritis and cytomegalovirus. Differ
ences were apparent in only a few areas.
The males who reported infections
were more relaxed and assertive than
those who had not. The females who had
had infections were more self-assured,
serious and forthright than those who had
never been infected.

traffic summonses, according
to Sgt Paul Stansel. publicity
director for the Public Safety
Division's training program
Stansel outlined a variety of
programs the Division offers
the general student body and
mentioned others aimed at
special audiences "These pro

Some programs, like those
concerning traffic control and
drug indentification. appeal
primarily to officers in train

infrequently But Stansel said,
"If we only get one person to
listen, that will mean one less
victim of a crime."
Most of the programs,
though. are very popular Over

< ITS! "A woman wishing to be known
as a feminist.” counsels Dr. Rebecca H.
Holman, an assistant professor at Penn
State University, doesn't necessarily
even have to open her mouth. Holman, in
a study of "the language of clothes,"
found that the clothes the woman wears
will frequently do an adequate job of
getting her point of view across
Holman showed 200 male and female
Penn State students seven pictures of the
same model, dresssed in seven different
styles of fashion. Each student saw only
one of the photos, and was asked to
respond to 33 statements describing the
woman pictured None of the seven
styles, Holman adds, were "revealing or
daring.”
The students said the picture of the
model in jeans, sweater, and corduroy
jacket showed a woman who was a
leader, and one who was interested in
women’s liberation The same model
dressed in jeans and a v-neck sweater,
though, was seen as having the opposite
characteristics.
