YOUTH DIVERSION PROGRAM
Juvenile offenders referred
By GEORGIA BATTY
Assistant city editor
Many juvenile offenders in the Athens area are now referred to
the Youth Diversion Program of the Athens Police Department
instead of being sent to Juvenile Court.
Juveniles committing what is defined by the Juvenile Court
Code as Status Offenses, including runaways and truants, are
referred to the Youth Diversion Officer, Detective Gene Mays.
The youths are then generally sent to the counselors assigned to
each school in the area by Family Counseling
If the child referred to Mays is on probation from the Juvenile
Court, the probation o ficer handles the counseling decisions
"The primary purpose (of the program) is the diversion of
youthful offenders a id potential youth offenders from the
criminal justice system to existing community resources,” said
Mays.
"In addition, this project will expand on existing resource to
handle individual and family counseling for troubled youths who
are either first offenders of misdemeanor offenders,” he added.
The program, which is funded by the Law Enforcement
Assistance Administration, has handled 74 clients, only 11 of
which have been terminated
There is no access to the files of the juveniles involved except
by Mays and the counselors, and after termination of the
counseling, the records are destroyed
The referral program is also used by teachers who have an
unruly child in their classroom Parents and students can refer a
child to the program in addition to teachers and counselors.
The program is not just limited to the youths involved,
according to Mays, who said that the family is also included
the counseling.
There are four basic changes that the counseling tries to effect
in the juvenile and their families.
The program tries to: bring about an awareness that the act
committed is socially unacceptable , maintain an awareness of its
unacceptabilty and at the same time discover and relieve any
feeling of persecution; to determine as far as possible the origins
of the behavior, and to help create adaptive behavior.
Creationism versus evolutionism finds
no debate on University campus
By JEANIE MAKSII
suh mrUm
“The basic thing is that a
religious belief is essentially
undebatable,” said Dr Mich
ael Olien, a professor in the
Anthropology Department, as
to why he wouldn't debate Dr.
Henry M Morris on creation
ism versus evolutionism.
Morris, the director of the
Institute for Creation Research
in San Diego, could not find an
evolutionist to debate him
when he comes to thl
University campus this week
end Professors from the
biology, microbiology, geology.
genetics, anthropology, and
/oology departments were
asked to debate the creationist,
but no one accepted, according
to Garry Kiker. an organizer of
the event.
Dr. Hope Ritter of the
zoology department, and one
who turned down the debate
invitation, said that he saw no
conflict between the two
theories and that evidence for
either theory of earth's begin
ning should be taught in a
classroom instead of being
debated in front of an audience
not "sufficiently versed in the
theological or biological side.”
He added that Norris is
experienced at debate and
"particularly well-prepared to
argue this side, and perhaps is
more knowledgeable than the
rest of us in documenting the
theological evidence that he
has.”
Bobby Parks, a staff mem
ber of Campus Crusade for
Christ and an organizer of the
forum, claims that the question
is not one of religion versus
science. “He (Morris) is not
debating them from a religious
viewpoint. He will be quoting
scientific evidence...not the
Btbl«. We re not dicussing
theological implications.”
Parks stressed that Morris is a
scientist, not a theologian.
Kiker said professors “ought
to be willing to stand up in a
debate against someone quali
fied to contradict them,”
adding that these professors
teach students who aren’t able
to intellectually challenge the
evolutionary viewpoint.
Morris will be speaking in
the Memorial Ballroom Sunday
at 9 p.m. sponsored by Campus
Crusade, and in a Creation
Science Seminar at Prince
Avenue Baptist Church during
the weekend. Of the engage
ment on campus, Kiker said of
evolutionists, "If they want to
nail him to the wall, then that's
the time to do it.”
Non-sexual ads are more effective
(CPS)—“Sex Sells"—it's said to be Madison Avenue's First
Commandment. But that may not be so anymore, if two recent
studies are any indication.
Nudity and the use of sexy models in advertising may actually
blunt the effectiveness of ads. according to separate studies done
at the University of Texas-Arlington and the University of
Wisconsin The researchers found that clothed. Plain-Jane or
John models create more acceptance in advertising.
The UT researchers, M. Wayne Alexander and Ben Judd. Jr.,
have replicated a 1969 study that non-sexual illustrations were
more effective than sexual ones in promoting brand-name recall.
After showing 15 slides containing brand names and various
degrees of female nudity to 181 male subjects. Alexander and
Judd reached the same conclusion

In non-sexual pastoral scenes, significantly more brand names
were recalled. But while Alexander and Judd had predicted that
brand-name recall would decline as nudity increased, they found
it approximately the same for the various degrees of nudity
shown.
Meanwhile, Michael Baker and Gilbert Churchill, Jr.
completed a study that would put Mrs Olsen above Farrah
Fawcett Majors in product-selling capabilities
Students indicated that the more comely models made better
ads, but the cuter models didn't sell the product Students,
especially male students, were more often persuaded to buy
coffee held by an unattractive woman than a pretty one
The research team surmised that perhaps the plainer female
was more believable, and created a Mong for the product
