UPI tells a joke
The joke of the year was told Tuesday in the form of
UPI's All-SEC basketball team Nowhere among the
sportswriters top five selections was Georgia's Walter
Daniels
I agree with the inclusion of Tennessee's Reggie
Johnson Alabama's Reggie King, LSU's DeWayne Scales,
and the conference's leading scorer, John Stroud of Ole
Miss but to put Kentucky's Kyle Macy ahead of Daniels
is a total injustice to a great player.
Macy has i>ut his act together again and the Wildcats
have played well as of late because of it, but he has not
come close to having the kind of year "Stinky" has had
Daniels is the second leading scorer in the conference,
averaging 22 points per game, and he has been a
consistent performer since he scored 32 against Rollins
College back in November in the opening game of the
season
The Crimson Tide’s King was voted the SEC’s
outstanding player for the third year in a row They
might as well change the name of the award to the
Reginald King Memorial Trophy Again, Daniels seems
more deserving of such an honor, along with Stroud
There is talk around Georgia Tech these days of a NIT
bid for Dwayne Morrison's Jackets Another joke, if you
ask me
When Tech was accepted into the Atlantic Coast
Conference most of the tougher opponents on its schedule
dropped the Yellow Jackets from theirs. They were
forced to add panzies to their schedule, such as Campbell
College and the College of Charleston. I'm not sure, but I
would guess that the College of Charleston is in
Charleston, but does anyone know where Campbell is"*
Tech's record is only 17-9, which is good, but not that
impressive when you look at their "powerhouse"
opponents
They don't belong in the NCAA. NIT. or any other
postseason tournament for that matter
As usual, there is optimism around the Atlanta Braves'
spring training camp in West Palm Beach But there are
too many question marks on the team for me to believe
things will be any different from the way they have been
the last three years.
The Braves' management did little to strengthen the
club over the winter All it did was argue with Bob
Horner and Bucky Woy. And by the way, where is
Horner 0
The pitching staff, worst in the league last year, has
ace Phil Nickro and Larry McWilliams plus a group of
players who have all had their good moments, but
generally inconsistence has been their trademark In the
bullpen of course. Gene Garber will be back.
Look for the Braves to improve some, but not much.
Georgia stuns Mississippi State, 75-72
BIRMINGHAM. Ala <UPI)—Mississippi State Coach Jim
Hatfield said prior to the Southeastern Conference basketball
tournament that only the six teams in the league with winning
records had a shot at the championship
Georgia, not among the "elite six," took offense at Hatfield's
comment and proceeded to upset State Wednesday night 75-72.
"We didn't go into it in great detail but the fellows got together
and we mentioned it." said Georgia guard Walter Daniels, who
joined sophomore forward Ron Webb with 22 points each to lead
the Bulldog attack
Hatfield, asked about his statement in a post-game new s
conference, stuck by his stand and reiterated that while any
team might beat another on a given night, he felt it would be
asked too much for one of the bottom four teams in the league to
win four straight games and the title.
Mississippi State, figured as a contender for the tournament
title after posting a 19-7 record in the regular season, led 46-41 at
halftime with Wiley Peck getting 16 of his game-high 24 points in
the first 20 minutes But State's big center Rickey Brown failed
toscoreat all in the second half after having 12 points at halftime
and that failure proved a big factor in the upset
Georgia Coach Hugh Durham was happy with the victnrv.
which boosted Georgia's record to 14-13 and assured the Bulldogs
their first non losing season in seven years. ‘That’s very
important to us," said Durham.
Daniels, held to seven points at the half, took charge with the
Bulldogs trailing 60-50 with just over 14 minutes left in the game
The senior guard scored the next 11 points to put Georgia on top
61-60 ~
"Daniels is just a great basketball player and at some point
he's going to get his share," said Hatfield
With less than two minutes left and the score tied 72-72,
Hatfield tried to get a time out to ell his team to hold the ball,
but State freshman Gary Gaspai wa'ked and Georgia went
ahead on a basket by freshman Er.. .laruury who then wrapped
up the game with a free throw wi»h 15 secu.iJs left after State's
Ray White missed an attempt to tie.
Despite the loss. Hatfield was hopeful the State season is not
over "We re just keeping our fingers crossed for an NIT bid," he
said "We consider it a very successful season with 19 wins and
eight losses We feel we re a very deserving club."
Daniels' 22 points gave him 1,659 for his career to tie the
Georgia career record held by Bob Lienhard.

Ruggers win two matches
25-0, 6-4 on muddy field
The Georgia rugby team won two of three games over the
weekend, splitting a pair of contests with Medical College of
Georgia Saturday in Augusta and downing Old Grey of Columbia,
S.C. Sunday in Athens.
Saturday, a side combining both junior and senior team
players lost to strong MCG first side, 1(M). The game was played
on a rain-soaked field which prevented either team generating
much offense Most of the first half remained concentrated
between Ihe teams' 25-yard lines until an errant Georgia pass was
intercepted for an MCG score
The second half almost duplicated the first. Both teams battled
a muddy field as well as each other until Georgia threw away
another pass and MCG scored and converted.
In the second team match, a young Georgia side defeated the
MCG "B" side 8-4 Scoring for Georgia were Ron Brown and
Scott Terril
Sunday. Georgia fielded its full first side and controlled the
game in winning comfortably, 254) The Georgia team totally
controlled the game
The forwards won ball almost at will from both the loose and
set play, and the backs kepi a steady pressure on Old Grey
defense Five Georgia players scored against Old Grey: Richard
Nolan. Tex Duck, Drew Rozelle. Peter Curnib, and John Godbee
Georgia will host the Georgia Rugby Union Select Side Trials
this weekend In addition to the Trials, Georgia will take on the
University of South Carolina and Hunter Air Force Base The
Trials begin al 10 a m and are followed by Georgia's games
against Carolina and Hunter

Terri Parsons The Univer
sity should be blessed with
more athletes like her
Since transferring to Georgia
in 1977, the senior has led the
women’s gymnastics team to
national prominence
Her statistics are impres
sive Last year Parsons placed
first on beam, second on bars,
sixth in the floor exercise, and
third in the all-around compe
tition of the regional champion
ships Amazingly, she accom
plished all of this after
recovering from an ankle
operation and a fractured
knee
"Terri has a terrific desire
to compete." Long said. ‘‘She
thrives on competition. It’s
really remarkable that she's
been able to perform so well
after injuring her knee last
year," Long concluded.
How well has Parsons
performed 0 Well enough to be
the captain of the Georgia
team, the Georgia and Region
III AIAW student representa
tive. and the student member
on the NAGWS (National
Association for Girls and
Women in Sport) Board of
Directors. In addition, in
almost every meet this year.
Parsons has finished in one of
the top three all-around
positions.
Parsons came to Georgia
because she was impressed with
the facilities, and also because
she had known Andy Long and
was familiar with her tech
niques.
When asked about this year's
team. Parsons said. "As far as
personnel is concerned, we
have all the girls from last
year and we've got some new
members, too We’ve been
working hard as a team as
opposed to working for our
selves 1 think that's the main
reason we've been winning "
“As for the regionals."
Parsons continued, "1 think the
experience we gained last year
will give us a valuable edge
this year If we can win the
regionals, then we ll worry
about the nationals," she
concluded
One thing Andy Long is not
worried about is Parsons'
performance
"Last year at the regionals,
Terri was far and above the
best bar worker,” Long said.
"You can count on Terri in
every meet because she
performs even better than you
expect she will Terri is just a
super athlete,” Long empha
sized.
What does the future hold for
Parsons?
"This is my last year on the
team, but I’m planning on
being a gymnastics coach,"
she said. "My tentative plans
are to go home this summer
and then come back and go to
grad school to earn my
master's in health.”
"I'm going to miss being on
the team,” she added, “but I
think they will be a lot
stronger next year. A lot of top
gymnasts are becoming inter
ested in Georgia because of
Coach Long and the great job
she’s done I just can’t say
enough about Andy Long She's
really helped me. not only in
gymnastics, but in life, too,”
Parsons stated
Andy Long and the Lady
Bulldogs will, in turn, miss
P.irsons.

and a team have a super
athlete and a respected leader

Dobbs is top coach
BIRMINGHAM. Ala (UPI)—After two seasons in which his
team won only 10 games each year. Vanderbilt Coach Wayne
Dobbs knew his job was on the line this year and pre-season
prospects were not bright
The Commodores, picked to finish eighth in the pre-season
Southeastern Conference poll, surprised everyone by jumping off
to an early lead in the SEC race and went on to an 18-8 regular
season record and a tie for third place in the conference
standings.
For leading the turnaround. Dobbs was named Wednesday the
United Press International SEC Coach of the Year The
40-year-old Dobbs was a runaway winner over Dale Brown, coach
of the conference champion LSU Bengal Tigers
