WASHINGTON UTM)-Con
ceding only that he had been
negligent in overseeing his
finances. Sen Herman Tal
madge Monday launched a
bitter attack on the former
aide whose charges led to the
Senate’s first formal ethics
proceeding against a member
in a dozen years
In a forceful opening state
ment to the Senate Kthici
Committee. Talmadge de
scribed former aide Daniel
Minchew as a ' proven liar,
cheat and embezzler "
Talmadge reviewed each of
the five allegations against
him, saying three were so
trivial they should be dropped
and the two more serious
Senator Talmadge
charges actually involved
wrongdoing by Minchew.

Students can vote
WASHINGTON. D C. (CPS)-In the early fall of 1976.
545 students from Prairie View A&M University attempted
to register to vote in Waller County. Texas But county
registrar LeRoy Symm allowed only 35 of the students to
actually vote Early this month, however, the U S.
Supreme Court ruled that Symm had wrongly disqualified
many of the other students The court’s decision is
expected to make it easier for students all over the
country to vote where they go to school.
Specifically, the court said local voter registration
offices cannot require college students to meet different
eligibility rules than those the rest of the populace must
meet.
Kent group splits
KENT, OH (CPS The May 4 Task Force, the Kent
State University student group that oversees the annual
memorial programs for the deaths of four students in
1970. has been split by the resignation of seven members
The seven claim the Task Force has been diverted from
its original “educational orientation” to "obscure political
purposes ."
Specifically, the resignees who included co-chair Mike
Soroham protested that Task Force meetings were
"undemocratic”, and that it had included in the
observance planned for May 4. 1979 a speaker from Pol
Pot's Democratic Kampuchea (Cambodia»
In a letter explaining the resignations, the seven said
the Pol Pot regime had been characterized by "gross”
human rights violations
Students pie governor
MADISON. Wl (’PS) Two weeks ago Massachusetts
Governor Edward King cancelled a visit to the University
of Massachusetts Amherst <>ut of tear of being pied by
students there Wisconsin Governor Lee Dreyfus, though,
was not so lucky He was pied by a reporter at the
University of Wisconsin April 9
Dreyfus knew the pie was coming. It was staged in
conjunction with the* Wisconsin Student Association's
annual "Event" Reporter Stuart Levitan paid $70 for the
honor of throwing a pie into the governor's face.
"I and my stall have made
some errors I have admitted
those errors. I have taken
steps to correct them," the
millionaire Georgia Democrat
said, but he denied "any
intentional wrongdoing ”
Minchew claims he opened
a secret Washington bank
account in Talmadge's name
through which some $39,000 in
false Senate expense claims
and most unreported campaign
contributions flowed during
1973-74. mostly for use by
Talmadge and his family
Talmadge said Minchew
used the money for his own
benefit, by foregoing hisemploy-
er’s signature.
Talmadge's net worth ex
ceeded $15 million and his
income was between $70,000
and $80,000 he said, but
Minchew had financial obliga
tions that exceeded his income
by more than $40,000
Talmadge noted he had
repaid the false expense
claims—amounting to $37,125—
after ordering the audit that
uncovered the discrepancies, a
fact which he said proves his
ignorance of wrongdoing when
it occurred.
He also turned over evidence
of the false expense cnecks
that ended up in the secret
Higgs National Bank account
to the ethics committee and
the Justice Department
"These are steps that only a
fool would take if he were
aware that there was a hidden,
phony bank account waiting to
be found.” Talmadge said,
adding that "even my enemies
don't claim that I’m stupid.”

Jesus has transformed my life—from
one that only last spring was yearning
for happiness and meaning to one that

Jesus is the way and the truth and
the life; no one can know God our
Father except through Jesus." John 14:6 I never was able to believe these words with
my whole heart Actually, I never spent time thinking about them until I saw His
undeniable love and truth expressed through lives that were totally committed to serving
the Lord I fent God's presence like I never had before at a Maranatha Student
Fellowship gathering With the help of brothers and sisters at Maranatha. I have been
able to know the Lord in a real way through a relationship with Jesus Christ.

The University’s musical talent was well represented at the
festival The Concert Band. String Quartet. Civic Symphony,
Brass Quintet, and the Concert Dance group all performed
during the week.
In addition to the local acts, The Acting Company made an
appearance at Memorial.
“The Other Half", directed by John Houseman (The Paper
Chase), was an outstanding performance by five women of the
Acting Company. Founded seven years ago by Houseman at
Julliard. The Acting Company is the country’s only touring
repertory company
"The Other Half' presents in tableau form the works of women
writers from Sappho to Virginia Woolf. More than a recital of
women's literature, though, ‘‘The Other Half” shows the
evolution of woman, “the most discussed animal in the
universe."
The play draws attention to the obstacles that women writers
have faced simply by virtue of their sex. The first English
woman to write a novel, for instance, was illiterate and had to
hire a monk to do the actual writing. Many of the first women to
publish their work, among them George Eliot and the Brontes,
would have failed had they been known to their readers as
women.
The myriad of characters portrayed by only five actresses was
impressive. With props like shawls, glasses, and books, these
actresses transformed themselves smoothly but swiftly into such
diverse characters as the 18-year-old Mary Shelley, with her
morbid dreams of men and monsters, worldly, risque George
Sands and know-it-all Dorothy Parker.
There were complaints from the audience of “feminist
propaganda” and "one-sidedness.’’ Of course "The Other Half”
was one-sided The theme was women writers and anything else
would have been irrelevant. As for showing women as successful
writers, that hardly qualifies as propaganda
Overall. "The Other Half" was a successful view of women "as
inheritor and innovator.” A well-paced blend of music, drama
and literary readings. "The Other Half” was certainly the most
professional event of the Arts Festival.
"Art in the Park” was the culmination of the week's events.
Balmy weather and a full schedule on both Saturday and Sunday
brought hundreds to Memorial Park Dance groups such as the
Winterville Marigold Cloggers, the Old Mill Dance Loft, and the
MNA Dance Theater performed in the park both days, and
artists from all over North Geocgia had work on display
Children played artist too at the Young Peoples' Festival of the
Arts, where they painted, made candles and emblazoned the road
with chalk drawings
The Athens Festival of the Arts was a week full of the unusual,
the beautiful and the creative. There really was something for
everyone in that one week, whether it was a lecture, an art
exhibit, a street painting or a rutabaga bakeoff
