The Bed and Black. VNednetday. May 2. 1979 looking for gems in today's consumer market Insurance protects autos and victims By ANN McNELLIS Staff writer If you were in an auto accident this afternoon, would you be able to cough up $30,000 in cash 0 Most people choke on the very thought Yet state law requires that each driver be able to do just that—either out of pocket or through insurance. Most drivers go the insurance route The auto insurance route, however, is not always well marked This article will serve as a partial map by which the consumer can guide himself through the morass of policy types, variables affecting costs and relevant state laws Policy Types Basically, there are three policy types Liability insurance "protects you from damage that you might do to someone else, according to Risk Management and Insurance Professor R E Johnson. That is. it protects you—up to the amount of coverage against lawsuits for injury or damage The second type covers physical damage to the driv er’s car Collision insurance is required on cars being fi nanced. but it is not worth while for older cars. Johnson said. Collision covers the differ ence between the deductible (what the policy holder agrees to pay out of his own pocket» and the actual cost of the repair. (Note: If it is cheaper to replace the auto than to have it repaired.insurance companies will do so. > Johnson recommends taking a deduc tion of between $100 and $250. lie cited two reasons for doing so. Eirst. the bigger the deduct ible. the cheaper that part of the policy will be. Second, since most people do not report small accidents to their insurance companies for fear of having their rates increased or insurance cancelled, they do not benefit from a small deductible Comprehensive insurance covers other damage to the policy holder's car damage not sustained in an accident. ( Accident related damage would be covered under collision insurance > That is. it covers damage done by theft, animals, fire, and weather, among others This is a relatively cheap type of insurance (perhaps 25 percent i of the cost of collision), John son said A minority of insurance companies lower rates farther by providing deductible clauses No-fault is the third insur ance type Georgia law re quires it. Johnson said No- fanlf insurance does not cover property damage It does pi-ovide each Person’s financial losses up to $2,500 will be borne by his own insurance company. The injured party can collect anything over that from the person liable Cost Factors Costs of a given policy vary from person to person because several variables can affect insurance rates. Factors which might reduce policy costs include a safe driving record, good grades ‘such students are presumed to be more conservative), favorable results on a psycho logical test (as yet. they are not widely administered) and living in a rural area The following factors might result in higher rates Living in the city, accumulated speeding violations and citations for careless driving are some of the more common Being involved in too many acci dents regardless of who was at fault can also result in a rate increase. If. for instance, a driver is hit in the rear five times and is. therefore, not held liable, his insurance company may nonetheless conclude that he is somehow at fault and raise his rates. Georgia Insurance Law If damages in any accident m Georgia exceed $250, the accident must be reported to the police, according to the State Highway Patrol. At that point, each party to the accident must demonstrate proof of insurance. Accident information is then entered into a computer to which the insurance companies have access, according to Johnson If. as a result of this or any other information, an insur ance company refuses or cancels coverage, then the consumer can fall back on state law which provides that each licensed driver is entitled to liabilitv insurance If no e/4n£Wer£ I understand that certain medica tions are not effective if taken with certain foods or liquids. Is this so? Yes. the effectiveness of some medica tions and vitamins, too. depends upon the manner in which they are taken Many of the antibiotics frequently dispensed by Health Services are most effective on an empty stomach, since milk, cheese, and other foods interfere with their absorption On the other hand, the absorption and. hence, the effectiveness of aspirin is thought to be increased when it is consumed with vitamin (’ Pharmacists also recommend that certain vitamins, especially those with iron, be consumed with food to minimize stomach upset, according to Pharmacist Ted Chaffin of the University Health Services Since the effectiveness of both medica tions and vitamins vary considerably according to how they are taken, one shold ask the pharmacist how to take each new prescription A. M. Who do I contact for help with insurance questions and problems? Last year, the Claims Department of Georgia's Insurance Department in Atlanta handled 109.104 consumer inquiries and complaints related to insurance of all kinds. In addition to following up on complaints, investigators help the consumer understand the terms ol policies and can even provide information on the insurance companies The lour field investigators travel around the state meeting with the public at the county seats about once each month A field mvesiigator will be available in Athens at the Courthouse on May 23 and June II. Between visits, one can call the Claims Department in Atlanta for assistance. The phone number is SS9*MI9 \ M. Does the "pull date" stamped on grocery store products mean that’s the last day they are safe to consume? No. The pull date on the product is only the last day a retail store may sell the item as fresh. Claudia Noles of the Clarke County Extension Service reported The date is designed to allow you a reasonable amount of lime to store and use the product at home even if it is purchased on the pull date. Noles explained After the pull date, she added, the amount of safe home-storage time is determined by the processors, based on their knowledge of the particular product and its shelf life J R II.
