"There are more important
goals and one of them is to try
to make sure that every person
who comes into contact with
football at Alabama is a better
person for it.
"There's a lot of education
you don’t get out of books
There's a lot you can leach
people on a football field."
Asked about when he might
retire. Bryant said he isn't
considering it now He said he
would only step down when
ever he or Alabama officials
felt he wasn't doing the job
anymore
"But,” he added. "1 won’t
wait and let the program run
down 1 want to make sure the
Alabama program is sound
when I leave.
Asked to elaborate on his
remark that “football has
passed me by,” Bryant ex
plained that as head coach and
athletic director he has many
duties that sometimes make it
difficult to keep up with such
fine points of the game as
"motion this way and motion
that way."
"You don't have a hell of a
lot of time to coach," he said.
"But, one thing 1 have never
let my assistants do is to make
substitutions, I always decide
on substitutes "
Bryant concluded his conver
sation on the subject by
laughing, "maybe I've just
gotten loo lazy "
