Students will get the oppor
tunity to begin celebrations for
‘this year’s homecoming week
end in the proper manner
T' 'irsday night with the second
annual shrimp and beer picnic
at the Intramural fields. Begin
ning at 5:30 p.m.. the picnic
offers all the shrimp and beer
you can consume for only S3.
The event is co-sponsored by
the all-campus homecoming
committee and the University
Union. A year ago IbOO people
responded and plans arc being
made to serve 3000 people this
year.
•’Last year, there was such an
overwhelming response... We
didn't have anything left over."
said Susan Jennings, publicity
director lor the all-campus
homecoming ommitlce. Mans
sorority and fraternity houses
"closed down their dining
rooms" last year to eat at the
picnic, and much the same thing
is expected Thursday, she ad
ded.
Alter everyone is well-fed.
the committee plans an old-
fashioned pep rally. Coach
Vince Donley, some of the
Bulldogs, the cheerleaders, and
the Redcoat Pep Band, the
Derby, w ill lead cheers and fight
songs at b:30 p.m. Jennings
said.
Greeks are asked to re
member this is mu another
"Yell like Hell" contest and that
all signs, banners, and cheers
should he in support of the
Bulldogs.
The five Miss Homecoming
finalists will he announced at
the pep rally along with the
Sanford Bridge Banner Contest
finalists.
A spectacular fireworks dis
play is scheduled to begin as
darkness falls. The fireworks
extravaganza is the biggest
expense this year lor the
homecoming committee, costing
"around $3000." according to
Jennings.
The pep rally and fireworks
will be free to anyone who wants
tt» participate. "After we run out
of shrimp and beer we’re going
to open it to everybody.’*
Jennings said.
As for the best viewing
location, the intramural fields
take obvious precedence, but
"anyone around east campus
should have a good viewing
spot." Jennings said. Those

voice of the Bulldogs.
Master of Ceremonies will be
Dave Taylor, dise jockey from
Q-105. who will be commenting
on the parade from the review
ing stand set up in front of the
Kappa Delta house. Judging of
the parade entries will be based
on several criteria — originality,
workmanship quality. Wd the
degree to which the merme is
carried out. according to Susan
Jennings, publicity director for
the homecoming committee.
This year's judges will be Dr.
Warren Spencer. Dr. ( al Loguc.
Dr. Betty Whitten, and Bob
Argo, president of the Alumni
Society.
The Homecoming parade iy
but one event sponsored by the'
all campus homecoming com
mittee. which also sponsors the
pre-game show and co-sponsors
Miss Homecoming with the
Intcrfratcrnily Council. The
committee's purpose, according
to Jennings, is to foster a total
campus involvement in the
homecoming tradition.
"Before the committee was
organized, we had no coordina'
ting body to develop all-campus
activities." Jennings said.
Seventh and eighth period
classes will be canceled on
Friday in honor of the parade.
